GUILTY IL - Katie Stockton charged in death of 'Baby Crystal', Rockton, 17 Dec 2004

Why no national media coverage of Baby Crystal case?
August 17th, 2009 at 12:21pm
<snipped>
Anyone else surprised by virtually no national media coverage of the arrest Aug. 5 of Katie Stockton of Rockton for allegedly leaving her newborn daughter to die on the side of the road in the middle of winter? And of the discovery of two more dead infants found last week in the trunk of a car that Stockton owned?

I thought for sure that CNN’s Nancy Grace would have had something to say about it.

Police help arrest Illinois fugitive accused of killing baby
Thursday, Aug. 06, 2009
<snipped>
The crime shocked authorities and residents in Rockford, Ill., who named the newborn Baby Crystal and organized her funeral. An autopsy showed she died from exposure.

A police squad recently reopened the case and focused on Katie L. Stockton, 28, who fled her home Sunday night.

Winnebago County, Ill., authorities filed charges Monday and got a tip Tuesday night that Stockton might be in Merriam, where a friend from the Rockford area had moved several years ago.

Illinois investigators worked with Kansas City’s FBI fugitive task force to track Stockton to an extended-stay hotel off Interstate 35. Stockton checked in under a fake name and paid cash, authorities said.

When police knocked on her door Wednesday, Stockton appeared surprised to see law enforcement officers, said Kansas City Detective John Cooley, a task force member.

Authorities booked Stockton into the Wyandotte County jail, where Winnebago County investigators interviewed her. On Thursday, Stockton waived extradition, and investigators drove her back to Illinois.

Police said DNA linked Stockton to the infant, who was found in 9-degree weather in a ditch in the yard of Stockton’s parents.

Investigators found the naked baby, who had curly black hair and blue eyes, in a white trash bag Dec. 17, 2004, with bloody clothes that appeared to belong to the mother.

An autopsy determined the baby probably had died a week to 10 days earlier.

Over the years, authorities ran out of leads. In recent months, authorities struggled to get a DNA sample from Stockton to test against the baby’s. Stockton resisted, but investigators eventually got the sample, police said.

Coming DNA results: Savior or hard evidence in Baby Crystal case?
Posted Aug 15, 2009 @ 10:28 PM
Last update Aug 16, 2009 @ 07:43 PM
<snipped>
That may very well be the linchpin that seals the fate of a woman linking her to the deaths of up to three abandoned babies or clears her name and sends investigators back to square one.

Winnebago County sheriff’s detectives and the state’s attorney’s office are anxiously awaiting DNA results of a buccal swab, a swipe inside the cheek with a cotton tip applicator, taken from Katie L. Stockton.

Stockton’s arrest was all but supposed to mean closure to a nearly 5-year-old murder investigation.

Instead, her arrest and follow up investigative work on the part of the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department produced two more homicide victims, both infants. Their bones were found last week in bags in the trunk of Stockton’s car.

South Beloit police impounded Stockton’s car on Aug. 15, 2008, after arresting her on charges of driving on a suspended license and registration. The car had been kept for the past year in an impound lot.

To date, Stockton has only been charged in connection with the death of Baby Crystal. Her DNA will be tested this week, Sheriff Dick Meyers said, by the Illinois State Police Crime Lab to determine if it matches Baby Crystal’s. Meanwhile, out-of-town forensic experts are expected to examine the bones of the other two babies this week, and they, too, will submit DNA samples to the State Police Crime Lab.

In Meyers' 40-plus years of law enforcement, he has seen his share of unusual cases, but he called this continually-evolving case “unique.”

Winnebago County Coroner Sue Fiduccia, who was instrumental in giving Baby Crystal an identity and a proper burial, said she is having a hard time dealing with the discovery of the two infants.

“Baby Crystal was difficult enough, and now we have two more infants. We put all of our energy and focus into Baby Crystal, but somehow we missed the other two.”

Unknown pregnancy
After four-plus years of dead-end leads, much has been revealed to authorities in the past two weeks.

Still, more questions than answers remain.

What police do have is a 56-months-long timeline of events starting with the discovery of Baby Crystal and ending with the discovery of the two unknown infants. That timeline is slowly being filled with names of people, places and events in an attempt to link the babies to their parents.

The chain of events began on Dec. 17, 2004, when a 13-year-old girl’s dog returned home with a piece of bloodstained clothing in its mouth. The girl, Katie Stockton’s sister, followed her dog to a garbage bag in the 1500 block of Will Road where the discovery of Baby Crystal was made.
Katie Stockton and her parents were questioned, but Katie was never linked to the case.

“She wasn’t living at home at the time,” Meyers said. “If there was a pregnancy, no one admitted to knowing of it.”

Over the next two months, authorities would later learn that Baby Crystal had cocaine in her system and hepatitis B.

In July 2008, Stockton began to accumulate a record of traffic offenses that includes driving on a suspended license and suspended registration.

In September 2008, Stockton pleaded guilty to forgery and was sentenced to 180 days in jail and two years probation.

In October and December 2008 and again in June 2009, Stockton refused to submit to a DNA test as directed by the Winnebago County probation office as part of her plea agreement. Stockton also failed to appear at an Aug. 3 court date and a warrant was issued for her arrest.

On Aug. 4, Stockton was propelled from probation violator to prime suspect in the death of Baby Crystal when Winnebago County sheriff’s detectives received unspecified “new evidence” linking her to the case. Police located Stockton a day later in Kansas City, Kan., where she reportedly was visiting a friend.

In the sheriff’s department’s quest to find additional evidence to link Stockton to Baby Crystal, detectives received a tip that Stockton had a car, a 1993 Saturn littered with bags of clothing and other belongings. That led them to the impound lot in South Beloit. Authorities located the car Wednesday, searched it and found the skeletons of two infants in the trunk. Authorities said one baby was in a plastic bag, the other in a paper bag.

‘Broke my heart’
Ever since Baby Crystal’s discovery, her DNA has been kept on file, waiting to be matched with her mother’s.

Meyers said the Illinois State Police crime lab has Baby Crystal’s and Stockton’s DNA and may return the results of the testing as early as this week. Meyers did not know if the results would be released to the public.

Tuesday, a forensic pathologist and a forensic anthropologist will attempt to determine the age and sex of the infants, if they are twins, and if any trauma was involved in their deaths. Their DNA also will be submitted to the crime lab, Meyers said, where it will be matched against each other and to that of Stockton’s.

Meanwhile, residents were still in disbelief Saturday over the latest developments.

Heather Kuhle, an employee of the Dari Ripple, said regardless of who the mother is, she questioned why the babies simply weren’t given up for adoption?

“It just broke my heart,” she said. “There are so many people who want children who can’t have them.”

Adam Reimer, 31, a Beloit, Wis., resident visiting the Wheel Inn, criticized South Beloit police for not thoroughly inspecting the vehicle when they pulled Stockton over and took possession of the car a year ago.

“The cops did not do their jobs,” he said. “The cops should have looked through the whole car. I can get pulled over on my scooter, and they’ll tear it apart.”

South Beloit police have come under heavy scrutiny from the public, South Beloit Mayor Randy Kirichkow and the city’s commissioners, who are considering an investigation and review of the department’s policy and procedures for searching any vehicle that is confiscated.

Stockton remains behind bars in the Winnebago County Jail on $1 million bond. She is scheduled to appear in court Monday regarding a petition to vacate her probation, and she will appear in court Sept. 3 on the murder charge. She has not admitted to having any connection with Baby Crystal or the infants found in her car.

“She hasn’t given us a statement,” Meyers said. “She asked for an attorney.”

It will be next week at the earliest before any new charges will be filed against Katie Stockton.

Winnebago County State's Attorney Joe Bruscato says no new charges will be filed against Stockton until the cause of death of those infants is determined. The Winnebago County Coroner's Office will get help from a forensic anthropologist and a forensic pathologist with the autopsy that is scheduled for Tuesday.

Winnebago County Sheriff Richard Meyers says they are going through a large amount of evidence in this case and they won't stop until they have explored every piece of information.

Stockton, 28, is already charged with first degree murder in the death of "Baby Crystal", the baby that was left along the side of a rural Winnebago County road in a garbage bag in December 2004. The baby froze to death.

What's next
A forensic pathologist and anthropologist will be in Rockford on Tuesday to examine what is believed to be skeletal remains of two infants that were found in the car of Katie L. Stockton.

The results of the examination should shed light on the sex of the babies, their age, whether they suffered any trauma and whether they were born alive or stillborn. Samples for DNA testing also will be collected and sent to the state crime lab.

Summary of Thursday's news
Police have found the bones of two infants in separate bags in the trunk of a car owned by Stockton, the woman charged with murder for leaving her baby girl to freeze to death in her parents’ yard in December 2004.

The charges against Stockton
Katie L. Stockton is charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the death of Baby Crystal:

Count 1: She intentionally and knowingly, without any lawful justification, killed a newborn by leaving the infant in freezing temperatures that caused death.

Count 2: Stockton left the newborn in freezing temperatures knowing that, in doing so, she created a strong probability of death or great bodily harm.

If found guilty, Stockton could face 20 to 60 years in prison and may be eligible for the death penalty.

Stockton has not been charged in the deaths of two other infants whose bones were discovered Wednesday in the truck of her car. The car had been in a vehicle impound lot in South Beloit since Aug. 15, 2008.

What you need to know
The call: A 13-year-old girl called Winnebago County sheriff’s deputies the evening of Dec. 17, 2004, after her dog returned to her home on Will Road carrying a bloody piece of cloth in its mouth. On Aug. 6, the sheriff said the caller was the half sister of Katie L. Stockton.

The discovery: Police found a dead newborn girl in a white garbage bag not far from the house.

The autopsy: Results showed that the baby was full term and born alive. She had cocaine in her system and tested positive for hepatitis B.

The burial: Law enforcement officials gave the baby the name Crystal and raised donations to bury her.

The charge: Stockton, 28, of rural Rockton, is charged in the death of Baby Crystal.

The car: Winnebago County sheriff’s police found bones belonging to two infants in bags in the trunk of Stockton’s car, which has been in a South Beloit police impound lot since Aug. 15, 2008.

Who was Baby Crystal?
Winnebago County sheriff’s deputies discovered the body of a newborn girl in a garbage bag on the side of Will Road in rural northwest Winnebago County in December 2004.

Law enforcement officials gave the baby the name Crystal because the sky above them was crystal clear that night as they searched the area for clues. An autopsy revealed that the girl was full term, born alive and died of exposure. The temperature outside the night she was found was 9 degrees.

The baby was buried Dec. 21 in Calvary Cemetery. Members of the community donated money to a fund established to cover funeral and burial costs.

Baby Crystal's grave in Calvary Cemetery near Winnebago is seen Thursday, Aug. 6, 2009.

Infants' remains in Ill. car trunk in plastic bags

<snipped>
Now experts are trying to determine how the babies died and whether they were related to Katie L. Stockton, 28, of Rockton, who was arrested earlier this month in the death of the newborn girl nearly five years ago.

It was only after Stockton's arrest that investigators discovered her 1993 blue Saturn had been sitting in an impound lot for the past year. So they towed it to a Winnebago County Sheriff's Department facility to search for more clues - maybe blood, hair or fibers. Last week, they found the remains.

On Tuesday, a forensic pathologist and an anthropologist will conduct autopsies, the first step to unraveling the mystery, said Sheriff Richard Meyers.

Assistant Public Defenders Susan Kalbantner and David Doll were assigned Monday to Stockton's case, and the Public Defender's said it would have no comment. A phone number listed for Stockton's mother was disconnected. A phone number could not be found for her father.

Police originally questioned Stockton, then 24, in December 2004 after a newborn girl in a plastic bag was discovered frozen along a dead-end road near the home of Stockton's parents. But Stockton, who was not living at home at the time, denied the child was hers and nobody knew whether she'd been pregnant, Meyers said.

Area residents named the infant Baby Crystal and organized her funeral.

He said it appears the infants' bodies were in the car when it was towed, but experts must confirm that, as well as whether the babies were killed and if Stockton was responsible.

"To take two young babies and discard them like garbage, it's hard to imagine somebody could do that," Meyers said.

Court hearing for Baby Crystal suspect pushed back
Posted: Aug 17, 2009 11:57 PM EDT
<snipped>
A Winnebago County judge pushes back a court hearing for Katie Stockton, the woman accused of killing her newborn in December 2004. Stockton was supposed to explain why she allegedly violated her probation by refusing to submit a DNA sample ordered by the court.

Today's hearing was supposed to focus on a petition to vacate Stockton's probation. While Stockton was there, things didn't get any further because her legal counsel made two requests right away.

First Deputy Public Defender David Doll reassigned himself to Katie Stockton's probation case just three days ago. Today in court, he wanted more time.

"I asked the judge to continue this case long enough so that I could discuss just this particular case, the petition to vacate probation, with Ms. Stockton."

A judge moved the hearing to September 3. That's also the date another judge will take up Doll's second request: consolidate this case with the murder charges. In court Doll said it would be the best use of resources, but he didn't expand on that.

"I want to leave all my arguments for the court. I prefer not to litigate in the public because the appropriate forum in my mind is the court."

"I think we see them as separate matters," countered Winnebago County State's Attorney Joe Bruscato, "but we'll respect the decision of the court as to whether they should be consolidated."

There's still the possibility Stockton could face even more charges. Last week police announced they found the skeletal remains of two babies in Stockton's impounded car.

"At this point in time the investigation continues. The process sits predominantly with the coroner's office who will conduct an investigation."

Autopsies on those two babies remains begin tomorrow. We hope to learn more about the infants' ages, sex. and how they died.

Autopsy today on infant remains found in Rockton woman's trunk

Extensive testing on the infant remains found in a Rockton woman's car will begin today in Winnebago County.

The coroner's office will be getting assistance from a forensic pathologist and an anthropologist to try to learn more about the skeletal remains of two infants found in the trunk of an impounded car belonging to Katie Stockton, 28. The car was impounded in South Beloit for about a year after Stockton was caught driving on a suspended license.

On Monday, authorities said have the babies were wrapped in cloth and stuffed in separate plastic bags inside the trunk.

Investigators hope the autopsy will help identify the babies, reveal how they were killed, and determine if there is a link to Katie Stockton.

The autopsy could take several days to complete.

Investigators found the two dead babies in Stockton's car at a South Beloit impound lot on August 12.

Trino You should have a mod merge the 2 threads together. To make the thread match the subject IMHO it should state two infants.......found in car of woman charged w/murder of "Baby Crystal"!

That's why I couldn't find it last night. I had myself even started a thread, but found the other one 1st. Maybe have this one tagged with Katie L. Stocktan too!

Thanks for directing me to your thread early this morning.

Ok so is it thought that Stockton first had baby Crystal then had the two other babies? Or did she have them in a different order?

Any order that it occurred in, it is pretty horrendous. If she had baby Crystal first, she has it leaves it at her parents, exposed and dies. And the baby is found... by her family. If she had the two other babies later, could that really be her solution? Just keep them in her car? And they have a safe haven law. I can only call that pretty depraved, she knew the results of the first birth and let it, maybe even caused it to happen again.

how horrible! i swear, for the LIFE of me I can't figure out WHY you would kill a child rather than drop it off somewhere?! and yeah, the bones in the car, if she was ok with just letting the children stay there, I would be searching backyards to every residence that this woman has lived at, make sure there aren't anymore little ones!

You make a very good point. It seems like she would get pregnant and rather then putting the child up for adoption or having an abortion, she would just have the child and either let the baby die or kill him/her. She seems a little heavy and could probably hide a pregnancy. Who know how many more there could be out there.

mysteriew & all, Here are a few things I pulled for a time-line of what happened:

What you need to know

Stockton, 28, of rural Rockton, is charged in the death of Baby Crystal.

The car:
Winnebago County sheriff’s police found bones belonging to two infants in bags in the trunk of Stockton’s car, which has been in a South Beloit police impound lot since Aug. 15, 2008.

Who was Baby Crystal?

South Beloit police impounded Stockton’s car on Aug. 15, 2008, after arresting her on charges of driving on a suspended license and registration. The car had been kept for the past year in an impound lot.

The law does not allow tow companies to enter towed vehicles.

“We’re not allowed to go through the car, the trunk, the glove compartment. It would be like someone going through your house without you knowing it. We can only hook it, tow it and lock it up.”

Sherer also said she remembers Stockton calling her husband several weeks later in an attempt to retrieve her car.

“She called once and wanted to make a deal with my husband. He went down to the impound and waited and waited, but she never showed up.”

Ace Towing charges a $30-a-day storage fee, which is on top of the $100 initial towing charge.

South Beloit police came into possession of the vehicle on Aug. 15, 2008. Winnebago County Court records showed officer Dan Kutz pulled Stockton over at 3:31 p.m. in the 400 block of Gardner Street and arrested her on charges of driving on a suspended license and registration.

Over the years, authorities ran out of leads. In recent months, authorities struggled to get a DNA sample from Stockton to test against the baby’s. Stockton resisted, but investigators eventually got the sample, police said

She was arrested two days later at a Merriam, Kan., motel by an FBI fugitive task force. She is charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the Baby Crystal case, and is being held in the Winnebago County Jail on $1 million bail. Meyers said her son is with is with his father.

It was only after Stockton's arrest that investigators discovered her 1993 blue Saturn had been sitting in an impound lot for the past year. So they towed it to a Winnebago County Sheriff's Department facility to search for more clues _ maybe blood, hair or fibers. They found the remains instead.

A hearing is set for Sept. 3, when prosecutors may present probable cause, although they could decide to take the case to a grand jury instead, Bruscato said.

Ah! There was a Baby Grace case recently, I know - I just assumed I had got it bass-ackwards on my end at some point.

Sadly, some of these cases get too tangled... there are tragically too many of them. :(

Angel who cares, thanks for the timeline, that really really helps.

I'm still wondering though if it is possible that she might have had one or both kids before she had baby Crystal and just left them in the car. So far it doesn't look like they are giving any indications of when those remains were placed in the vehicle or how long she owned that vehicle.

I would tend to think she had them after, with Crystal being found so quickly (and I'm sure unexpectedly) and all the suspicions that went about, she probably thought she was better hanging on to them, so no one would find them, yk? But then again, that only gives her about 3 or 4 years to have two more kids. I know it's more than possible, but it's still not a lot of time to get pregnant twice and recover twice without notice.
