The body of a newborn boy was found early Saturday morning in a duffel bag in Near North neighborhood, according to officials.

It happened about 5 a.m. in the 1000 block of North Orleans Street outside a Chicago Fire department firehouse.

The baby was found in a duffle bag covered with snow when the firehouse crew went outside to shovel, according to fire department spokesman Larry Merritt and Chicago police.

The Abandoned Newborn Infant Protection Act, gives the families of newborn babies legal protection from prosecution if they bring a child to a police station, firehouse or hospital.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office and Area 3 detectives were investigating.

Did someone think that leaving a baby outside at night would work out fine?

What is the supposed safe way to abandon a newborn according to the Act? Should a parent give them to workers on duty or is it enough to leave a child in front of the building?
