IL - Roberto Rolon, Zoraida Bartolomei and their two children, murdered, Romeoville, 17 Sept 2023

  • #221

12/7/23

Authorities said their investigation into the deaths of Alberto Rolon, 38, Zoraida Bartolomei, 32, and their young sons was not complete, but they confirmed that the suspect, Nathaniel Huey Jr., 31, had been in a relationship with Bartolomei.

Both Bartolomei’s husband and Huey’s girlfriend, Ermalinda Palomo, were aware of the relationship, police said.

[..]

Romeoville police said their investigation indicated Palomo was aware of Huey’s intent to commit the homicides, participated in the planning and drove Huey to and from the family’s home in Romeoville.

A Sept. 17 Romeoville police bulletin obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request named Huey as a suspect in the quadruple homicide, advised that he had stopped going to work and that he was aware police were pursuing him, describing him as acting “irrational and erratic.”

[..]

A Sept. 19 Streamwood police report states that about a month before Romeoville police found the family shot to death at home, Palomo had asked Huey to leave, prompting him to threaten to “take everyone down.”

According to the report, another member of Huey’s household called police around 11:30 p.m. Sept. 19 to report Palomo as a missing person. The unidentified caller said Palomo had left the house earlier that day and described her as “fearful.”

[..]

The caller told Streamwood police that Huey was aggressive and said Palomo and Huey had been together since 2016. The caller also told police that Palomo had said she would turn herself in to Romeoville police and that she and Huey were planning to go to his mother’s house.

The police report states that shortly after midnight on Sept. 20, someone made contact with Palomo via text and told her to come home. Palomo responded “OK.”

“The phone was shut off moments later,” the report said.

[..]

“We know without a shadow of a doubt that at the time of the murders in Romeoville, Ermalinda was home sleeping,” [John Paul] Ivec said. “This has been confirmed with multiple family members.”

So very sad. Palomo didn't have to know about the children, or pull the trigger, under "felony murder" or "law of parties" --and had she lived, she very well could have been charged with murder.

Reportedly, Nathaniel Huey Jr.'s fiancée Ermalinda Palomo helped plan the execution-style murders of Zoraida Bartolomei and her family, Romeoville police said.

I get that. I'm not talking about the legal intent, more the moral. That's what I'm trying to decipher - early on, it was theorized she was an unwilling participant, now that seems to be disproven. But I find it suprising that a woman with grandkids close to the age of the murdered children, would be ok with that. Cold-blooded to the nth degree.

I agree. It doesn't matter if she knew or not that the children were murdered. She knew that a murder would take place and she helped to plan it. She's a murderess, from all we know right now, and had she lived, I hope she would have spent the rest of her life in prison.

Unfortunately, this doesn't look good for E Polomo.

Perhaps it would be different if the Streamwood Police were citing EP contacted police last August to report she asked Huey to move out and he made threats against her and her family --but that does not seem to be the case.

Instead, investigators have had several months to uncover evidence including communication between the suspect couple where they are now alleging EP helped plan the killings of the family of 4. o_O

I first saw this story this afternoon on Chicago local ABC7 news. All of the major networks in Chicago have very vigorous Investigative Units.

IMO, ABC had recently gotten a hold of some evidence in this case. I think ABC probably contacted LE for comment. Once LE knew this information was about to be made public, they chose to make a limited statement before the news stations did.

I suspect there is more to this story.

Just coming off the TX murder trial for Kaitlin Armstrong-- convicted of murdering Mo Wilson- 25, an upcoming gravel cyclist, in cold blood, I can believe anything! Armstrong, 36, the ultimate Zen Yoga Master, couldn't let go of the thought Wilson was her rival and threat to her relationship with her on/off boyfriend -- another cyclist.

Although the two cyclists once had a brief encounter eight months earlier (when Armstrong and her partner were on a "break"), Armstrong executed Wilson in cold blood the next time she came to town and/or had the opportunity.

Armstrong also had girlfriends and a sister near the age of Wilson and she was clearly un-phased by shooting the victim in the head and heart.

In Polomo's case, perhaps her obsession with Huey, her cheating fiance'-- was greater than any vision of the children, their father, and their pets. MOO

I agree, Chicago has great investigative news units. Unfortunately, there is a lot to investigate.

What I don't understand is why Palomo participated at all? If she was fearful of him and driving the car, why the heck didn't she drive to a police station while he was in the house slaughtering the family? Chicago has an entire courthouse dedicated to Domestic Violence victims. All the Judges do is issue Orders of Protection.

As sick as it sounds, maybe EP had 48 hours of bliss where the couple were seen walking hand in hand, strolling the shops in OK, knowing "her man" executed the woman that dared to come between them after a six year relationship. Personally, I don't understand this mindset but I know it exists! JMO

I truly don't understand that mindset. But, based on my own family's experience with domestic violence, there are so many resources available in Chicago. There are advocates at the Courthouses. Illinois law allows a family member to get a protection order on behalf of the victim.

from above post:
A Sept. 19 Streamwood police report states that about a month before Romeoville police found the family shot to death at home, Palomo had asked Huey to leave, prompting him to threaten to “take everyone down.”

So Palomo evidently wanted Huey to leave.
Huey made threats.
So then Palomo went along with the plans to murder the family?
And on the day, her family said she was "fearful" on leaving the house, and subsequently on the phone?

If she wanted Huey to leave a month before the murders, seems curious that she was an accessory because she was jealous of the relationship between Huey and Zoraida.

Why did she participate, even in the planning? No choice in her mind? Manipulation and threats? Or was she indeed jealous and enraged, and the stating she wanted Huey to leave was some kind of manipulation of her own? Or had she completely lost her self during 6 years of living with this violent horrible man ?

Or she wanted revenge and was an active and willing participant in planning the slaughter.

Take note this Police Report was from Sept 19, after the murders, by an unnamed party who alleged that about a month earlier, E Polomo wanted Huey to move out, and he responded by making threats.

Also, around the same time of the police report above, I recall statements from the family claiming they believed EP went on the run with Huey-- against her will, to protect her family.

Just the same, they were also adamant that EP was home in bed when the murders occurred. At this time, we know this bit about EP being at home is not consistent with the evidence.

CHICAGO (CBS) – The girlfriend of the man accused of killing a family of four in southwest suburban Romeoville was involved in the crime, police said.

Romeoville police said Ermalinda Palomo, the girlfriend of Nathaniel Huey Jr., knew about his intent to commit the murders back in September at the family's home. Police had previously only said Palomo was a person of interest in the case.

The victims, Alberto Rolon, 38, Zoraida Bertolomei, 32, and their two children were found fatally shot on Sept. 17 in their home in the 500 block of Concord Avenue.

[..]

Police said evidence indicated Palomo not only had prior knowledge of Huey's intentions but was also involved in the planning and drove the car to the crime scene. Police determined through "digital evidence" the path of the car the suspects used traveling from Huey's and Palomo's home in Streamwood and that she was the driver of the vehicle. The Romeoville Police Department did not specify what kind of evidence they used to make the determination.

In addition, police said Zoraida Bartolomei and Huey had a relationship together that was known to both Bartolomei's husband and Palomo.

There was no evidence of additional suspects involved in the killings.

Authorities for the first time said Palomo "had prior knowledge of Huey Jr.'s intent to commit the murders."

Police said Palomo was "involved in the planning, and drove the vehicle to the crime scene."

According to authorities, digital evidence showed the vehicle used in the crime traveled from Palomo's home in Streamwood, Illinois, to the Bartolomei's Romeoville home at the time the murders took place. Huey Jr. was seen exiting and re-entering the vehicle from the passenger side while Palomo was the driver, police alleged.

"There is no evidence of additional suspects in this tragic incident," Romeoville authorities said in their release. "Additional forensic evidence is pending analysis and further information will be released when the investigation is complete."

Shortly after her murder, the family of Zoraida Bartolomei issued a statement.

"We want to express our heartfelt gratitude for the outpouring of solidarity and support following the tragic loss," the statement said. "At this moment, our primary focus is on channeling support, assistance and love for our family and loved ones. We appreciate the understanding and we take this opportunity to once again express our profound gratitude for the solidarity and support extended by people during this period."

The family also said that they would be unable to provide further comment due to the investigation and the "profound challenges" faced by the family after the murders.

An attorney for the family of Palomo had originally said they believed she was kidnapped and had nothing to do with the murders, saying that she was home sleeping at the time of the murders.

The latest statement marks the first time police addressed Palomo's role in the crime.

Police said an investigation remains ongoing.

UPDATE - 500 BLOCK OF CONCORD

The investigation into the murders of Alberto Rolon, Zoraida Bartolomei and their two children is nearing completion, but is not yet finalized. The investigation has revealed that Zoraida Bartolomei and the suspect, Nathaniel Huey Jr. had a relationship together. The existence of this relationship was known both by Bartolomei’s husband, Alberto Rolon and Huey Jr.’s girlfriend, Ermalinda Palomo.

Evidence indicates Palomo had prior knowledge of Huey Jr.’s intent to commit the murders, was involved in the planning, and drove the vehicle to the crime scene. Digital evidence shows the path of the vehicle used to commit the crime traveling from Huey Jr.’s and Palomo’s home in Streamwood, Illinois to the 500 Block of Concord in Romeoville and back to Streamwood at the time the murders took place. Huey Jr. exited and re-entered the offending vehicle from the passenger side and Palomo was the driver of the vehicle.

There is no evidence of additional suspects in this tragic incident. Additional forensic evidence is pending analysis and further information will be released when the investigation is complete.

[..]

The family, through their attorney JohnPaul Ivec, sent the I-Team a statement saying, in part, that they "had no previous knowledge" that police considered Palomo a participant in a quadruple murder plot.

Days after the execution-style killings, Huey Jr. and Palomo were spotted by law enforcement in Oklahoma.

A license plate reader alerted authorities to the couple's black GMC parked in a Walmart parking, while the two were shopping inside.

The I-Team obtained surveillance footage showing what Palomo and Huey were doing, less than an hour before the pursuit, fiery crash and shooting that ended with them both dead.

In the video, obtained through a public records request, the couple can be seen holding hands, and buying what appears to be hair dye, a burner phone, and other cosmetic supplies.

ABC 7 Police Affairs Consultant and former suburban police chief Bill Kushner reviewed the footage, and said at no point did it appear Palomo was endangered.

With regards to the items purchased, Kushner said the couple displayed the hallmark signs of being on the run.

"You don't want to be caught, you don't want to be found, if you're going to change your appearance," Kushner told the I-Team. "This is almost a Hollywood plot."
