Teen pleads not guilty in young sister's death

...Keith Randulich appeared in Will County court Tuesday by video feed from the county jail. His public defender entered the not guilty plea to two counts of first-degree murder in the death of Sabrina Clement...

...The Will County coroner says she was stabbed repeatedly in the neck...

...He's being held at the Will County Jail on $10 million bond.

No mention of mental status yet Suzi.

(For anyone following the case that is not familiar with how charges are brought before the court in IL, it's not uncommon for there to be more than one charge of murder for a single victim, they will be consolidated at time of trial IIRC)

Thanks for the explanation, Kat. :blowkiss:

I'm still suspicious of the 16 y.o. brother as well.

A Mokena teenager told police that he cut his 4-year-old half-sister's throat with a steak knife and stabbed her while his younger brother played a wrestling video game upstairs, according to a search warrant affidavit filed by a Mokena detective in Will County Circuit Court.

The court document said Randulich confessed to taking Clement into the sub-basement, straddling her as she struggled and screamed, and stabbing her.

The Lincoln Way East High School senior, who was a week away from graduation, returned home from school about 3 p.m. and fought with his mother about buying a gun, which he'd recently been licensed to own, the court document said. His parents and 14-year-old brother later left for a school event.

IMO, he was probably the abuser and she was going to tell.

I think if mom had let him buy the handgun, there would be a mass murder suicide being reported...JMO. I will be watching to see how this plays out.

Schizophrenics, when violent, are more likely to be violent toward family or caregivers, however the majority of them are not violent, and are more likely to be the target of violence.

I wonder about bi-polar disorder or schizoaffective disorder (a combination of schizophrenia and bi-polar disorders) as manic stages, according to wikipedia, often entail anger or rage.

That is, of course, if he is mentally ill - which there is not enough information to say whether he is or not.

During that last 15 years, I became close for about a year or so with a woman who was schizophrenic and with another woman who had schizoaffective disorder. The woman with SAD had violent and gory hallucinations on a regular basis. I learned a lot in my relationships with both these women. Mental illness, like spiritual illness, is often confounding.

Based on the little bit we know about this case, I very much believe mental illness is at play.

bless little Sabrina - she asked her brother "why are you killing me?". :(

Videotaped confession played at sentencing of teen who murdered young sister

Shortly after murdering his 4-year-old sister in his Mokena bedroom, Keith Randulich sat in a police interrogation room, apparently staring at his blood-stained pants as he explained to detectives why he did it.

A video recording of Randulich's interview with police, which came shortly after he brutally cut the neck of his half-sister Sabrina Clement in 2009, was played in court by prosecutors during a sentencing hearing Tuesday. Randulich, 19, pleaded guilty to murder charges last month.
...............
Randulich said if he could go back in time he would perhaps get a job so he could afford a gun to kill the relative.

"It was a waste of life," he said.

Randulich is scheduled to be sentenced Feb. 2.

That is so tragic. It's hard to tell just who is a "waste of life" for this young man. His life, his sister's, the relative that he suspected of abusing her? He hasn't given up his desire to kill the relative, that's for sure.

This is not the first time we've had a mentally ill person kill a child who was thought to be a victim of abuse. It's almost a form of paranoia by proxy. It reminds me of Marci Webber's murder of her little girl. She, too, was certain that her child was being or was going to be abused. She slit her throat and wrote "divine mercy" in the girl's blood. I see this crime as very similar. I really wonder if both killers not only had mental illness but had experienced some form of abuse themselves and projected that pain onto others.

Did anyone else find that this boy's language and diction was a bit surprising for a high school student pulling A's? I wonder if he regressed to a younger age when he confessed to the crime.

What a tragedy, all around.
