Three face new charges in teen's death

Prosecutors last week filed amended complaints against 18-year-old Carl Dane, 17-year-old James Glazier and 15-year-old Robbie Mueller, accusing them of killing Sidnee Stephens after kidnapping her during a July invasion of her Pinckneyville home.

Authorities investigate Pinckneyville, Ill., prisoner's death

PINCKNEYVILLE, Ill. • Authorities continue to investigate the death of confessed murderer Carl Dane in his Perry County Jail cell on Friday.

Dane, 19, was sentenced to 60 years in prison after he pleaded guilty in June of first-degree murder in the death of 15-year-old Sidnee Stephens of Pinckneyville in July 2010. Dane was scheduled to be transferred to the Menard Correctional Center on Friday.

The final suspect in the 2010 murder of Pinckneyville teenager Sidnee Stephens appeared in Perry County court Tuesday and walked away charged with Home Invasion by Accountability.

Bennett sentenced to 20 years for involvement in Stephens death

The week of July 18-25, 2010 was the longest week of Jason Tritschler's life.

That week, his 15-year-old daughter Sidnee Stephens went missing, and the search ended with her found shot, strangled and tied down with a concrete block in a creek.

Eight years later, a judge sentenced the last of five people involved in her murder to 20 years in prison.

Chad Bennett originally faced murder charges, but he accepted a plea deal to a felony charge of home invasion.

The emotions didn’t only come from the defendant and his family — but also from the mother of Sidnee Stephens, who made a statement saying she had forgiven Robbie Mueller and agreed to a plea agreement which would release him from prison sooner.

Mueller was sentenced to 26 years in prison on a day-to-day sentence, which means he will earn a day of time served for each day he serves, equal to about 13 years. He has been in prison since July 2010, which will count as time served. His previous first-degree murder charge was vacated by the Perry County State's Attorney's office in March.

Stephens said she has been talking to Mueller for about two and a half years and truly believes he has shown remorse for his actions.

“He was put into a situation by a couple of bullies,” she said. “He is only a month older than my daughter Sidnee.”

After she finished her statement, she embraced Mueller in a tearful hug.

Fighting through tears, he thanked Stephens for her words to the court and said she is one of the strongest people he has ever met.

“I promise that I’ll make something of my life and there won’t be any day where you regret forgiving me,” Mueller said, looking at Stephens. “I like to think of her kind of like my second mom because she has given me birth to my second life.”
