Found Deceased IL - Vanessa Ceja Ramirez, 22, murdered, Midlothian, 2 Nov 2020

I wish there was some kind of update on this case. I would love to know the current theory that investigators have of exactly how this murder occurred.
Thank you for bringing Vanessa's case to the forefront again. I wonder if the investigation is even on CCSO's radar anymore :(

What about the cell phone ping at the apartment complex? Was that just a tower location thing?

Thank you for bringing Vanessa's case to the forefront again. I wonder if the investigation is even on CCSO's radar anymore :(

What about the cell phone ping at the apartment complex? Was that just a tower location thing?

Articles at the time of her murder described it as her cell phone's "last ping":

"Police were called, and helicopters and dogs were dispatched to the 2-square-mile, triangle-shaped wooded area. They picked up Ceja Ramirez's scent at 151st and Pulaski and then her cellphone's last ping, which led investigators to an apartment building 2 miles away in Oak Forest. A police canvass found nothing."

From: Harvey woman who disappeared on walk in Midlothian forest preserve was strangled, autopsy finds

This apartment complex referred to above was the Manchester Court Apartments in Oak Forest.

A year after her murder, her family gathered at a vigil and the reporting on this gathering revealed new information, that her phone's location data had a really yielded two locations: the Jack Hille Middle School and the Manchester Court Apartments prior to her body being found:

"A massive police search tracked her cell to two different locations in nearby Oak Forest, an apartment complex and a school, but she wasn’t there."

From: Family of Murdered 22-Year-Old Speaks Out a Year After Her Death

(It is just called "a school" in the article, but the accompanying video from the news station showed its actual name.)

Struggled to find any kind of updates - sadly, but here is something LourdanArts did on Vanessa's case back in May last year. John does a good job and I appreciate the attention he brings to cases that get very little from MSM. Very compassionate person.

"This heinous crime is every parent's worst nightmare," Sheriff Tom Dart said. "It took years of tireless work by our police detectives to investigate this case, but we never gave up on finding Vanessa's killer and seeking justice for her and her family."

OMG, I am so happy they found the killer! It was a horrible case, I remember, Vanessa was walking with her mom and mom’s friend and disappeared after she went to her car.
Her poor mother. RIP, Vanessa.

This one was so unbelievably cruel and heinous. I cannot say how happy I am that he was finally caught.

The Chicago Tribune article contains this info:

Investigators learned that, at the time of the woman’s disappearance, Petrey lived at an apartment building in Oak Forest where the victim’s cellphone pinged shortly after she was reported missing by family members.

I remember a newscast from immediately after her body was found where investigators were searching this apartment complex where her cell phone had pinged.

One of his facebook pages: Log into Facebook

It says he is a former corrections officer.

Edit to say...I browsed through it and very difficult to look at pictures of him with his young kids, (apparently), enjoying cookies, etc knowing what he did to this young woman.

Agree. In his posts he comes across as an animal lover and while his are mostly reposts, and i saw only 2024, there is nothing unusual. It is so horrible.

I've thought about this case often over the last few years. It took long enough, but I'm glad there's been an arrest.

So happy to see this solved, especially scary since they had no connection to one another.

Okay, this article contains a LOT of information never previously known. Police have evidently had an idea that Petrey was a suspect within days of the crime and they have been working with one of his relatives this entire time to get enough incriminating info to get a warrant for his DNA:

The article says that the victim was walking with her mother and a friend but stayed behind to tie her shoes. Then the following text message exchange took place:

  • 3:47 p.m. from her mother: “where are you?”
  • 3:48 p.m. from Vanessa: “I went back because its too long of a walk.”
  • 3:51 p.m. from Vanessa: “Where are you guys at?”
  • 3:53 p.m. from her mother: “We are on our way back.”
  • 4 p.m. from Vanessa’s phone: “Ha verdad” (blue iMessage went to green after 3:53 p.m.)
  • 4:21 p.m. from her mother: “Where are you”
  • 5:34 p.m. from her mother: “The police are looking for you”
Ceja-Ramirez’s mother was confused by the “ha verdad” response, which loosely translates to “for real,” and tried calling the phone several times.

Her mother then used the “Find my iPhone” to track her phone and saw it was at a school just west of 151st and Central. Previous articles stated this was the Jack Hille Middle School. The phone then appeared at the Manchester Apartments. Police searched there and the phone was not located, but police allege Dakota Petrey was looking out the window at officers at the time.

The article states that it was a full two days after she went missing when her body was found deep in the woods of the forest preserve in an area known locally as "The Pits" - bound, sexually assaulted, strangled, and partially burned. Her coat and shoes were missing from the scene.

Nearly a week later, a tip came into the police hotline by a relative of Dakota Petrey. The tip alleged that it was something Petrey “would do” and that the relative had been asked to help move Petrey’s car at around the time of the murder, which was blocks away from the scene. The relative also told police that Petrey was served an eviction notice about ten days after the crime and he had moved to Tennessee.

The relative kept working with police and told officers that Petrey used to live in the forest preserve. Later on, police eventually located the victim's shoes near the general location where her body had been recovered a month prior.

Police in Tennessee conducted surveillance on Petrey in April 2021 and collected a can he was drinking from while at work. It was from this collection of DNA that police were able to compared his profile to DNA left at the scene of the sexual assault and murder. Police say Petrey's DNA was found on Ceja-Ramirez’s shoes. In September 2021 investigators got a warrant to obtain a buccal DNA swab from Petrey and this sample matched other DNA on the victim's shoes and body.

Thank goodness for his relative who was willing to do the right thing!

God! Nightmarish story.
It took a while, i hope he did not abduct/kill anyone else in the meantime. In Tennessee or wherever. Just a horrible creature.
He should be tested fully, neurocognitive, neurology, psychiatry, maybe full exome DNA tests, to see what patterns are typical for such killers and sadists. JMO. I always hope something will eventually pop up that would contribute to better prevention. So far I can only see tons of reposts and no "likes" on his FB. (But he should have another FB, a closed one. MOO.)

Good job, police. And kudos to his relatives who must be very different from him.

Again, best wishes to Vanessa's mom and all who loved her. I hope they have good support.

In hindsight, all these photos with naked babies, we don't know if they are even his babies? I wonder if the police will find CSAM materials or interest in these things in him? One always things of Evansdale murders, 5 hours drive and he seems to like driving.

I'm curious, if they were able to get a warrant and collect his DNA in September 2021, less than a year after the crime took place, why did it take another three years to make this arrest?

I too would like to know. It seemed to take an excruciatingly long time to get to an arrest. Hoping we find out the reason.

This case really stuck for me. Just taking a walk, and then GONE. I'm hoping that it was LE putting together a case - it sounds like they had a "hunch" it was Petry but not enough for a conviction. I'm giving LE the benefit of the doubt here because all along it seemed like nothing was being done! I honestly never thought this would be solved and am just so glad for Vanessa's family (and so profoundly heartbroken that Vanessa was murdered).

Agreed, I feel the same. I think there must have been some roadblock for investigators in getting the case to the point where they had a good legal basis for his arrest. I want to know the details but don't know if we ever will.
