How far south might give indication of foul play etc. :(

It could also have been an accident of some sort.. Just terrible news.. :-(

I am slightly perplexed by this situation. No ID has been made...Wouldn't Willows gorgeous red hair be a giveaway as to who the body belonged to?
The autopsy required to ID the body makes me wonder if its in a progressed state of decomposition which would make me think perhaps its not Willow, sadly it is someone, but it just doesn't sit right to fit Willow's situation.

Oh absolutely, and given the horrible situation I hope that is the case.

I am hearing four miles. I doubt that she walked four miles. And there is nothing to the south but farmland and some areas with trees.

Aw no. :( I don't think she could walk that far either.

I have seen cases where toddlers have wandered farther than four miles. I would have to do some searching to provide a link but four miles is possible imhoo. :twocents:

let me bump up shewho's map. I wonder if this was near the tracks/fields where the dogs led LE..

Police searching for missing Watson girl

[snip]

The sheriff's department reports Willow Long, 7, of Watson was reported missing by her parents at about 10:15 a.m. They believed she disappeared between 9 and 10:15 a.m., probably walking away from the family home.

UPDATE: Authorities Searching for Missing Watson Girl

A 7-year old girl is missing from Watson, and authorities are asking for help in locating her.

[snip]

Watson's Fire Department has been set up as a staging area for search teams as authorities comb the area for the girl. We spoke with Watson Fire Chief Matt Kulesza Sunday afternoon, who told us that at this time, search volunteers are not being sought, but those that show up to help will not be turned away. Kulesza said search dogs are on the way to help, and an Illinois State Police search plane is on standby.

[snip]

When Willow left home this morning, her mother says she didn't take her glasses.

I took a snip of the live update report video from www.ksdk.com because the statement from the sheriffs office was was printed onscreen, and part of the statement said,

"On Monday, September 9, 2013, at approximately 7:30 pm, four volunteer searchers located the body of a small child in an area south of the village of Watson in Effingham County."

The Effingham County Sheriffs Department doesn't have the statement on their website.

I am going back to the map.

I'm not seeing that four miles anywhere. So I don't know how accurate it is. Maybe the person mistook four men for four miles. There were four searchers. She certainly could walk that far. I just don't think she would have. Especially not in that general direction. But it's possible. And she could have slipped away in that direction without being spotted. There are only a few houses between where she lived and all of that farmland.

I have a question.

If she walked that distance wouldn't the dogs have picked up some of the trail at least? Maybe?

You would think so. I have learned to trust dogs' sniffers.

Ugh, what a horrible shock. I was reading page 25 and clicked a link that said people had been taken in for questioning.. only to find the article had been updated to say a body had been found. :( I was NOT prepared for that.

Some of my FB friends have purple ribbons for their profile pic, and dozens of them have shared the information about Willow. It's going to be like 100 punches to the gut today as they wake up and read the news and post their reactions.

Another explanation for advanced decomposition could be that death occured earlier than assumed.
As for the identification, this might hint at foul play. I've seen other cases where police couldn't rule out involvement of family members and after finding the body couldn't ask them to identify the body since it would have given hints about the cause of death; knowledge about that would help identify the perpetrator, so they want to keep it under wraps. Sometimes they would ask for identification of clothing.
But of course there are dozens of other explanations.
