Although Asian and Asian-American women were targeted in six campus robberies in July, the reported robberies since then do not show patterns of being motivated by race or gender, University Police investigator Jeff McCracken said.McCracken and other community leaders spoke Friday at a rally the Asian Pacific American Coalition sponsored on the Quad to raise awareness on campus about the robberies. McCracken said police suspect five of the six July robberies were committed by the same person.
"Since APAC was really affected, we felt the need to do something for the entire campus and raise awareness," said APAC director Peggy Ho.
Between July 1 and Nov. 1, 2001, and that same period for 2002, the number of reported robberies on campus increased from 10 to 23, McCracken said. He noted that some of the robberies in 2001 included firearms, while the robberies in 2002 were mostly labeled "strong armed robberies," which means force, but not a firearm, was used.
