It was here that I read that bit about her cell phone. That info may have been initially released to the group of friends/colleagues that reported her missing.

Thank you for sharing this! I hadn't seen it before.

I'm sure that pings can be identified through the service provider.

I wonder if YingYing had iCloud, track my iphone or other GPS location tools set up. That would provide some more info on her movements and people she was communicating with at the time.

Although, if she did, I would think LE has already investigated those avenues thoroughly by now.

Does anyone know whether it's possible to see if the 22 bus that day was running behind schedule? My sense is that if it was, she would be more inclined to take a ride, as she was already running late.

I see what your mean. My understanding(of the texts) is that she is still in the application phase. NOT, on her way there to sign a lease that day for a SPECIFIC apartment. I think I misunderstood the earlier reports. I thought ahe was goinf to sign a lease on Jun 9th, that she had already toured the property & decided to lease it. Can someone point me in the right direction. It may be a process I am not familiar with..

wait. She applied on June 8 for the apt, and someone texted her that next day to approve her? Also, text alleges she STARTED her application. Did she finish it and submit it? Seems like an awfully quick turnaround to get approved for a lease, no?
Not unusual in this area dominated by housing directed towards college kids. I think they take 24 hours to do a credit check but that's about it, if even. You can even do an entire application online and then just go into the leasing office to sign it with some companies. Nothing about this part of the story sounds odd or suspicious to me.

Thank you!

Even if she wasn't signing the lease that day, she still had an appointment with the leasing manager to attend to part of the process of leasing an apartment.

why would the driver of the Saturn take her to the Illinois terminal?

I wonder if there's a certain demographic that would buy and drive this particular car? Like, young/middle-aged/elderly people? Low income or middle class or well to do people? Appeals more likely to males or females? Is it a family car? Is it a fast car appealing to young males? etc.

This is what data or intelligence analysts do :)

Yes, plus, it seems like she was just signing for one bedroom in a 4 bedroom place: http://www.news-gazette.com/news/local/2017-06-23/family-missing-ui-scholar-never-never-give.html

This was common in the college town I lived in. There were some apartment complexes where each person had their own lease for the room- I imagine it helps keep people responsible for their portion of the rent in an easier way and helps make it easier to deal with individuals moving in/out rather than the whole apartment turning over.

It's not hard to get approved for these apartments. My first apartment had me fill out a form, send in an employment offer letter stating my salary, and I presume they did a credit check or something. I was approved within 24 hours.

I hate to say it but a perp who knows what he's doing destroys the cell phone immediately.

I imagine that cell phone pings would have allowed LE to find the car much sooner and have more info as to YingYing's whereabouts, but it's impossible to know whether they have the physical phone or even any leads due to pings. Maybe they do have that info and it led them to the car - it's just hard for me to believe that it took the FBI 2 weeks to find the car based on pings.

With the video cameras around town they likely found out the direction the perp went in, but as the FBI shared, it's not easy to get info from cameras due to resolution issues. They said they couldn't get a license plate from cameras, and that would include the camera that captured the video that is being shared as well as any other camera in town that they checked out.

IMO LE probably gathered information on the route taken in town and lost the perp when he entered a rural area. One poster up-thread who is a local mentioned that it is very easy for the perp to get on a highway or into a rural area where there are no cameras.

I hope that your ideas are correct in that YingYing knew her abductor and the cell phone records will help LE find him! For now, I have other theories.

All MOO.

Yeah, I agree with this theory. Visualizing it, this makes the most sense, I think.

Someone once wrote the words "brazen daytime abduction"....Yep, "brazen" fits the bill when one realizes the University of Illinois Police Dept is located at/on 1100 W. Springfield Ave. Care to guess how many meters/feet away the bus stop is on Goodwin & Springfield Ave to where the UIPD is located?? Per google maps: 1 min
138 ft
via W Springfield Ave
Mostly flat
Yep, brazen. (Please feel free to correct if I got the wrong intersection/info)

I think you mean Goodwin & Clark bus stop -- Yingying was near it, standing underneath a tree (it was 93 deg out)

I have done a diagram, see attachment

The maroon circles denote the bus-stops:

1) NE corner of Mathews/Springfield (Teal 12)
She was dropped off here, where University High School is (aka UniHi) My old high school!!

2) SE corner of Goodwin/Clark
In front of Campbell Hall, Public Media bldg .. the local WILL radio station, also PBS TV station

She wanted to catch the connecting bus at the SouthWest corner of Mathews/Springfield! Oh the FATE! If she had done that, she probably NEVER would have been KIDNAPPED

Instead she walked East on Springfield to Goodwin, PASSING the U of I Police station. Continued north on Goodwin, to Goodwin/Clark. She was standing underneath a tree (it was 93 deg out), near the bus stop

That black rectangle (with arrow pointing north) is the Perp's black Saturn Astra. That guy had the NERVE to drive past the U of I police-station eventually "snagging" Yingying. Previously, security cameras in front of Electrical Engineering Bldg (on Wright St, WEST end of Engineering North Quad), caught the PERP driving north on Wright St. See "black rectangle" with black arrow

Thanks for sharing this! Great map. I was under the impression that she meant to transfer busses at the corner where she was dropped off (Mathews/Springfield). Any idea why she would have walked to Goodwin and Springfield?

This leads me back to a question I asked in a previous post - is there any way to know whether the 22 bus was behind schedule or maybe rerouted that day?

I know in my city busses are often rerouted when there's construction or an accident, and the only way to know that is to set up rider alerts (emails or texts) for that particular route.

This doesn't seem to be a route she has traveled each day, so maybe she simply didn't know where the easiest place to connect to the next bus was.

why would the driver of the Saturn take her to the Illinois terminal?
Illinois Terminal is the hub for MTD buses - he could have said a different bus would get her to her location quicker and he was going that way anyway...

Or that's the route they took and he dumped her phone somewhere near there...

All we know for sure is her phone pinged there after she was picked up by the black car and that they did check all the surveillance at the Terminal and concluded that she did not get onto a train or bus.

And if anyone is wondering, the Terminal is one block north and a handful of blocks west (in the opposite direction of the apartment complex she was headed to) of where she was picked up.

When she was first reported missing before the video of her getting into the car was found, I remember someplace it said that her phone was last pinged at Illinois Terminal? And then once the video was found and released, they did not include that tidbit again.

Also, I know for a fact that they pulled video surveillance from downtown Champaign businesses. Maybe following the car's path?

Interesting- that means that they didn't take the quickest way out of town. From where the car was at/picked her up, they could have just headed straight north to get on the expressway. Instead, if they were close to the Illinois Terminal, that means they headed west through parts of campus and then towards downtown Champaign.

Of course, these locations are only about a mile away, so it may have just pinged there and does not necessarily mean she was near there.

So it was hot and she was late and he was very arrogant and brave..a bit flashy driving by the police station. I wonder if he did indeed pretend to be a police officer and in the general area.

The area she left from was very not busy for 2pm in the afternoon. Couple of cars and one bikerider.

They could have taken Lincoln to interstate 74 (I assume this is what you're meaning by quickest way out of town?) but threw her phone out of the car somewhere near enough to the Terminal that itd still ping from there almost half an hour later?

If they went that way at all, it would depend on what he told her and how familiar she was with the layout of the area. Like an above poster said, maybe he said he would take her to the bus terminal- and that would be the right way.

If she was very familiar with the area and he said he was taking her to the lease signing, then she would know they were going the wrong way pretty quickly.

Of course, all just guesses. We don't even know which way they drove for sure. Presumably, LE has tons of security footage and knows which way they went through town.

Now that FBI no longer need info regarding the Astra I can't help but wonder if they're even considering the Astra her last point of contact with the public. Is the Astra driver the kidnapper? Or, did he drop her off elsewhere? Did she come into contact with another person that kidnapped her? Where would he have taken her that would've been an acceptable place to drop someone that may have gotten confused about the buses? If not THE terminal I wonder if it's nearby where cameras wouldn't have picked her up. Or is this his convenient excuse?

The street she was on when picked up is a bit slow this time of year, but she was only one block south of University Ave which is bustling throughout the day.

Yep, that's what I meant :) Of course there are a couple of options for how to get to Lincoln, but it's either a random side street to Lincoln, or take Goodwin up further north and then head over. Taking Goodwin up would have gone past One North apartments, which was her destination.
