Accused kidnapper's attorney: Wait for 'whole story'

Brendt Christensen has the support of his family as federal authorities proceed on a kidnapping charge against him in connection with the disappearance of visiting University of Illinois scholar Yingying Zhang, his lawyer said.

“The family members that I have spoken to are 100 percent supporting him, and they’re scrambling to adjust their schedules to be here to support him, but there’s no firm plans in terms of who is coming where and when,” said Evan Bruno, of the Urbana-based Bruno Law Firm.

Bruno said one of his client’s local family members is his wife, whom he declined to name, and said the couple doesn’t have children. Christensen isn’t currently employed, he said.

“He just graduated, and his next step is to look for a job, which he has been doing,” Bruno said.

Since the arrest, Christensen has been holding up well, his attorney said.

“This is all a foreign thing to him. He has no criminal history,” Bruno said. “He has a speeding ticket, I think, but that’s about it. He’s been trying to maintain a positive attitude. He knows that this is going to be a long process and I think he’s prepared for it

Suspect in Disappearance of Chinese Scholar Could Face Life

Asked point blank whether Christensen has declared his innocence, Bruno said, "That is not a point that we've reached in this case yet."

Zhang had been in the United States about two months before she vanished. Asked whether he'd had any previous contact with the woman before their paths allegedly crossed on June 9, Bruno said, "I'm not going to comment on that."

UGG, the interview. His answers sounded like he wrote them out ahead of time so he could come across as smart and with it. I didn't see anything of substance in there though what would you expect in an Internet interview. I was sorry to see I agreed with him on a few movies. We probably liked them for different reasons. Anyway thanks. It was interesting.

He's not the first (alleged) criminal to think he's above it all and that his words won't come back to bite him.

The attorney has just listed some of the reasons nothing in this guys life has prepared him for this. I think it's grounds for dismissal (of the attorney.)

Yingying Zhang's suspected kidnapper appears in court

Yingying Zhang&#8217;s family had a very somber demeanor in the courtroom Monday.

The hearing only lasted nine minutes, and during that time Christensen spoke very little.


&#8220;The defendant has the right to have a grand jury hear evidence to determine if they believe there is probable cause,&#8221; a spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney&#8217;s Office, Sharon Paul, said.

During the nine-minute hearing, 28-year-old Brendt Christensen acknowledged to the judge that he understood his rights, but did not say anything else. U.S. Magistrate Eric Long ordered Christensen held without bond in the kidnapping of Yingying Zhang. Authorities say facts in the case indicate the 26-year-old Zhang is dead, although her body hasn’t been found.

Long ordered Christensen to return to the court in Urbana on Wednesday to determine bond. A preliminary hearing was set for July 14, but that would be waived if a grand jury returns an indictment before then. The federal kidnapping charge carries a maximum sentence of life in prison, according to a U.S. attorney’s office spokeswoman.

The (Champaign) News-Gazette reported that about 45 people attended the hearing Monday morning, with another crowd in the courthouse lobby and yet more people across the street, many chanting “Justice for Yingying.”

Stevens Point man accused of kidnapping Illinois student

Christensen is a Stevens Point native, attending Stevens Point Area High School from 2003-2007 and then U.W. Stevens Point for one year.

Former students can't believe this is happening, and that he grew up in this neighborhood.

"I loved my time here as a student," said former SPASH student (Class of '82) Rick Windel. "It is such a great neighborhood and so sad knowing something like this is hitting so close to home."

I thought I made it clear he's out of touch with his client. I'd cut him loose. He doesn't need a big name who doesn't understand him. I'd want someone who understood me better than I understand myself. MOO

Profile says member since 2004 and one of the interview questions mentions 3.5 years, so I'm guessing 2007-2008.

G: I would say I've changed the most in regards to how I interact with other people. When I first came to YT, I was a 15 year old in a "mid-teen crisis". I didn't know what to think or what to do, and was sort of a recluse and didn't think highly of ANYONE. This got a little worse, but as I matured, I started to value other people's opinions (partly because of this site, actually), and accept people in general. Because of this I'm a lot more outgoing and not afraid to talk to people.
