delays are unconscionable in this case.
5 minutes with a nutcracker, if only...
People forget the student that was kidnapped. Probably murdered .
Her family will never forget her and Websleuths will never forget her either.
I still think they should have sealed the names of his questioners for penalty phase, insanity.
I wonder why they did not? Accident?
Will it become public knowledge that he was actually informed of their identities? Will this action have repercussions and if so, for whom?
Shame they weren't named 12 months ago when everybody was off analysing breast-milk and it's components.
Justice delayed is justice denied.
Anybody search Chinese media? I'm curious how they are understanding this farce.

I did some Twitter searches a week or two ago, I found nothing new.
YY's mother pleaded with him to disclose her location.
He's playing a game here.
Fancies himself as a mastermind.
Yet, a true coward at heart.
Runs like the clappers when his psych self-diagnosis cover is about to be blown wide open by people more educated than he is.

Is there anything we didn't think of yet?

One thing - maybe he has finally exhausted himself and just wants this over with. One can hope.

@dm92 - is the final pretrial conference on 5/13 still a go? Plus the one mentioned above on 5/30.

TIA! :)

I don't know about the 5/13 conference. I would assume it has been vacated and the 5/30 conference is the final pre-trial conference, but I haven't seen any notice of that on CourtListener. At this point, there aren't any outstanding issues that they need to have a hearing on as far as I know -especially now that his mental health defense is no longer in play. Shadid still has to rule on a few outstanding motions, but they don't need any hearings for those. They have already had them. Both side's witness lists, exhibit lists, void dire and case summaries are due on the 28th, so it sounds like the 30th is the final pre-trial conference.

Not much longer now, and we should finally start getting some answers, and hopefully justice....

yesterday- Suspect in Chinese scholar Zhang Yingying's case drops mental health defense - World - Chinadaily.com.cn
Wang Zhidong, legal adviser to Zhang's family, told Xinhua on Tuesday that the withdrawal of mental health defense is an unusual action for his lawyers, considering their efforts in previous months to argue that the 29-year-old suffered from severe mental illness in an attempt to avoid the death penalty.

Wang said it is still unclear why they made this decision and the aim of dropping mental health defense remains to be observed.

So I went searching for anything else Wang said, found this
Wang Zhidong said that the defence lawyers were seriously frustrated this time, but believed that they would continue to find ways to excuse the suspects, or use various excuses to delay the start of the trial, the future debate between the prosecution and the prosecution is expected to remain very intense.

they are as confused as we are, it appears

Shadid entered rulings on a number of the motions in limine filed by the US today.

Basically, he granted all of their motions except for a few. Only one of those was denied -248 Motion to Preclude Execution Impact Evidence or Argument. The others were deferred for ruling later as they apply more to the penalty phase and he wants to see the parties proposed instruction to the jury for the penalty phase first before ruling.

Of note, he granted motion 254, Motion to Compel Disclosure of the Defendant’s Mitigating Factors and Penalty Phase Witnesses. BC will now have a deadline to provide info on his non-12.2 mitigating factors and witnesses for the penalty phase.

What is the shoe print in reference to? Forgive me if it's been mentioned!

Nothing regarding this case. Shadid was laying out the differences between BC's case and another case his defense was using to argue their position. THAT case, not BC's case, included a shoe print.....

I assume you are referring to the information regarding him telling the jailhouse informant he got her into the car by impersonating a police officer. That info isn't really new. It has been mentioned in previous filings, and most people had theorized this was how he got her in the car, as EH's testimony mentioned that this was how he tried to get her to get into the car......

Update: In his ruling today, Shadid mentions the final pre-trial conference on 5/13. So, I am assuming now that this conference is still on, and is in addition to the conference on 5/30. I suppose the conference on 5/30 will address their witness lists, exhibit lists and voir dire stuff -which is all due to be submitted to the court on 5/28- while the 5/13 conference will be used to tie up any remaining loose ends.

Wow that was a read and a half. Coffee time I think and another read through.

Such a shame this case won't be covered live for the public to view, I'm now intrigued as to how this is all going to play out. I don't trust BC and think that he and the defence team are going to be as awkward as hell, I hope the Prosecution team are a strong one.

It will get lots of coverage in the press around here, and will probably have lots of summaries of the evidence and witness testimony. Also, I believe the testimony is a matter of public record, as with all the court filings, so there should be things available to look at.

Thanks dm, there are still answers I want from him but I don't think we'll get them. There is however, there is still his stance in court, his attitude and as to whether he'll be game playing. No doubt I can get that from the press as you say, but the buggers don't like showing their goodies to us in the UK. I'll find media somewhere that will obliege.

You assumed incorrectly.
I meant this, actually-
A cellmate claims that Defendant also admitted that he had pretended to be an undercover police officer, which further corroborates E.H.’s report and identification.

The 'wow' was about what else he may have confided to a 'cellmate'.
If he admitted to this, it is likely he admitted to murdering her too.
Maybe.

Kitty, it makes me wonder what the hell he has been saying and to whom. Do you really think he'd be that stupid as to admit that he killed YY?

I did not think he was so stupid as to confide in a cell mate for sure, and that was in the early days ...
Then again, a cell-mate possibly would not have the greatest credibility in a court. It throws out his defense that he was just giving her a lift before she panicked, for sure...
If he was talking at that early stage, did he keep talking or cease?
He clearly did not talk about where he disposed of her body, however, unless he destroyed her?
Very frustrating altojack... shame we do not get to watch the case.
Shame she was never found.
(we could still book flights and charge the old Johnson Ross building in the dead of night?)
I do not want to be depending on local news outlets for court transcripts though.
This is never gonna be easily accessible.
Drip feed of tidbits from trial, crumbs from a curated table..not good.

Oh Kitty, we're just going to have to take whatever info we come across during the trial. This whole sad affair has got me tired out, all the thinking and reading then thinking again. I must admit though, I'd love to have a good rummage through that Ross building. Dead of night? Get outta here! You gotta be joking. There is no way I'd be poking around in the dark, I'd need several changes of underwear lol.

I never thought that this was the way this would play out, nothing, not even a crumb for the dear family. It just breaks my heart that they have to go to court and listen to that animal.
