Bloomington mom faced questions with DCFS before baby Zaraz Walker disappeared

(....)
Within the past two years, the Department of Children and Family Services has been involved multiple times with Kimberlee Burton. She’s now being charged by prosecutors with concealment of the death of her daughter, Zaraz Walker.

According to DCFS, after Burton gave birth to Zaraz Walker in July of 2021, hospital staff reported Burton was behaving erratically. But, Burton herself went to DCFS to speak with them, and soon thereafter, the report was considered unfounded.

Although, there were two other investigations into Burton, beginning in 2020.

The first, abandonment. According to DCFS, the claim was she left her children with a family member. That was also deemed unfounded.

Then in May of 2021, an allegation she abused her oldest daughter. The father removed that child from the home. According to DCFS, last week that case did indicate findings of abuse.

I don't get why the DCFS would so easily brush off the July '21 behavior allegation when they were aware of other allegations of abuse from 2020 and May '21.
Maybe it's just the hindsight that makes it seem so obvious, but if someone has 2 prior allegations of child abuse (one still being 'open', sounds like) and then has a newborn baby, surely it's responsible for DCFS to keep in touch with that mother? Maybe even remove all the children from her care while the May '21 allegation was still under investigation?

A Bloomington woman who told authorities she left her baby in a cemetery after the child died while sleeping with her has been found mentally unfit to stand trial, a judge ruled on Friday in the woman’s second court hearing since she was charged with concealing a death.

Kimberlee Burton, 29, did not speak at the brief hearing in which defense lawyer Brian McEldowney told Judge William Workman that a psychiatrist has deemed Burton mentally unfit, meaning she is unable to understand the criminal charges against her and assist with her defense.

In the doctor’s opinion, Burton “may be restored within one year, possibly much sooner,” said Workman. The defendant will be transferred to McFarland Mental Health Center for treatment.

BLOOMINGTON (WEEK) - A McLean County judge has determined that two children, who are siblings of a missing Bloomington baby, were themselves neglected while being cared for by their mother.

Last month, Kimberlee Burton, 29, was found unfit to stand trial on criminal charges alleging she concealed the death of her seven-month old daughter, Zaraz Walker.

Authorities believe the baby is dead, although her body has never been found. Burton, under the care of the Illinois Department of Human Services, attended Tuesday’s hearing virtually, but nothing was said about the baby’s whereabouts.

Mother charged in missing baby case found not guilty by reason of insanity

Posted on November 4

BLOOMINGTON – A Bloomington woman charged with concealment of her baby’s death has been found not guilty by reason of insanity because of her mental illness.

While she’s acquitted of the charges, it could be years before Kimberlee Burton goes free. Her infant child Zaraz Walker has never been found and is presumed dead.

Burton, 29, was arrested last February on Class 4 felony charges but there’s no evidence she killed the baby, who was seven-months old at the time.

Burton appeared Thursday for what’s called a stipulated bench trial in which prosecutors and Burton’s public defender agreed to the facts and the case’s outcome.
