IMPORTANT - Recalled Pet Food

  • #21
Ol Roy (dry) was listed as the best nutrition wise to feed dogs according to consumer reports a few years ago.

Does anyone know how long the food has been tainted?
Its only the moist food right?

Amraann, so far it is only the wet food. Mostly the pouches, although in the case of a few, it's the canned food as well that are chunks in gravy. Also, Nutro has listed their Senior canned foods with Lamb.

The tainted foods seem to have been made from Dec. o6 to Mar. 07. What burns me up is that Menu Foods knew there was a problem in February!

Glitch, I send my sympathy and love your way.

I've spent the day calling my friends with dogs to make sure their dog food isn't on this list. My mom's vet is calling each of their patients to make them aware of what's on the list too. Glad she has a good vet...

Thanks Kris..
I only feed mine dry. It just occured to me that my cousin's cat died for no apparent reason and they live near a Stop and Shop. (which is on the list)
I can't believe they knew all this time.. No amount of money can replace a beloved pet but I see a huge lawsuit in the works.
Suing them is really the only way to punish them.

I really think this is criminal. If anyone of us deliberately poisoned our pet for a year we would be brought up on criminal charges I wonder if the key players in this company will be??

ETA- Glitch I am soo sorry about your pet.

My vet determined that this is what killed my dog last week. I assumed it was that she was old with heartworms, but he said no, it wasn't that. She died of kidney failure by the food (It was Old Roy brand from Wal Mart.) The thing that kills me is seeing that only a "handful" of pets died, they keep reporting - but just in my town, my mother has a student whose cat is under intense treatment and might die, and a colleuge whose cat died. If my Mom (who doesn't get out much) knows three people affected by this, there is no way that only a handful of pets died. It has to be thousands. :-(

Ohh how awful! I'm so sorry for your loss!

My mums cat got sick, she's better now but she was pretty bad for about three days, I didn't think she would live. My poor mum is on her own and Zoya means so much to her. When I took the Iams cat food back to the store where my mom bought it from I checked the shelves and they were still selling the recalled food. :furious:

I'm so sorry, Glitch. A friend of mine also lost her 16 year old poodle last week due to kidney failure and wonders if it was from the food or natural causes. I feed my dog the Ol'Roy canned. What I have left in the house is not from the contaminated lot, but of course there's no way to check the cans I've thrown away. She doesn't seem to be sick at all, so I'm thinking we're okay.

Sorry for your loss, from one pet lover to another I know how hard it is to lose a pet. :blowkiss:

My mums vet said it is far more than just a handful but the pet food industry is HUGE money and there is major damage control going on.

We only buy our food from the vet (Medi-cal) because we need a hypo allergy food but I imagine millions of pets are likely to have been exposed to the tainted stuff.

My lab mostly gets fresh food that I prepare myself...he wont eat tinned or dry food...too spoilt.
Im sorry to hear of all these animals who are sick or have died from eating these products.I also feel sorry for the owners who have unwittingly put their pets in danger..how terrible would it be to know you caused the death of your own furbaby.....I would be mortified:( .
Id imagine there will be one hell of a lawsuit when the dust settles and in this case rightly so:mad: .
Glitch....I am so sorry to hear about your furry friend....thoughts and hugs from me to you:blowkiss:

I heard that Menu Foods recalled 62,000,000 cans of pet food. Can anyone imagine how many pet deaths this has caused, the vet bills, the severely injured pets. Menu Foods will never be able to pay for all of the damages. I can see Bankruptcy Protection coming into play. A Class action suit has already been filed, but there will be many such suits.

A local kitty has been euthanized due to kidney failure. She went to my vet and was eating the Nutro that my kitties eat.

Seems like it's hitting cats more than dogs.. I wonder why that is..

I think cats are more susceptible to kidney failure than dogs. Have you ever noticed that cats don't seem to drink very much? Their urine is very concentrated. At least that's what I've heard. Plus, when a cat is sick, they rarely show signs until they are half dead. I lost my kitty to CRF (chronic renal failure) when he was 9 years old. He got checkups regularly, got his shots, ate normally, but I noticed that he seemed to be drinking more than usual (this was about 8 years ago). Not a ton of water, but he would get on the counter and drink out of the sink, etc. Within a few days he was sick, I took him to the vet and they said he had CRF. He lived for 8 1/2 months after that. He was great for about 7 1/2 of those months, then his one kidney shut down completely and the "good" kidney was functioning at 25%. We even thought about doing a transplant, but he was too far gone. Breaks my heart to think of him. His name was Herbie. Kidney failure is a horrible way to go. My heart just breaks for these animals and their poor owners. :(

I think people tend to feed their cats most food more then they do their dogs.

My two cats, really big Buddy, almost 6, and very little Scoot(er Girl), almost 7, and I, are very, very, close. I can''t imagine what it would be like losing either one of them, and I pray that never happens.

My deepest sympathy goes out to the poor animals, and to their owners, whose lives will be forever changed as a result of this. Such heartache; unimagineable.

As I mentioned before, I am just lucky my cats didn't like the cuts with gravy, or any of the foods on the recall list, as they get whatever they want, and I would have cases of it on hand.

What freaks me out is I wonder if this will happen again. Now I'm afraid to buy any kind of pet food. I feel like feeding my girls home cooked meals from now on..At lease I will know what I put in them.. they will be healthier than the dog food I buy.. I was trying to buy my girls the most healthy dog food there was and yet it was one of the ones on the list.. I thought they were getting sick because I was feeding them veggies/apples and steak/chicken, come to find out it was the pouch food I was feeding them...

Our beloved domestic cats all originated from the North African Wild Cat that still exists today. The two look identical except that the North African Wild Cat is larger than our domestic cats. Because the North African Wild Cat evolved in extreme temperatures with little water they developed physiological systems that don't require a lot of water. They drink less water pound for pound compared to many other mammals, and their urine is quite concentrated as a result. Also, their coats are not water resistant like most dogs--there really wasn't much need in the desert for that. Just thought I would offer a couple of cool facts about kitties.

Days after my beautiful dog, Spirit, died suddenly on February 5th of this year from unknown causes, my cat, Angel, became deathly ill and was in renal failure. We had no idea why. She got down to less than half of her weight, and she was so anemic(would not eat or drink), that her tongue and gums were a deathly whitish grey. She laid in one spot for three weeks. She got down to less than half of her ideal body weight.

When my Vet could do no more, and she could not hold down more than a 1/2 teaspoon of soft food, I tried one last thing. I set a timer to go off every 1 1/2 hours for 18 hours out of the day. I force fed her 1/2 teaspoon of Hills Science Diet A/D mixed with water every 1 1/2 hours for 18 hours out of the the day. That she could handle without vomiting. She was so close to death, so sick, and so weak, that she didn't even resist for the first three weeks of force feeding her. Her recovery has taken many weeks, and she still has not yet gained back all of her weight. I am so very happy that my lovely Angel kitty is doing so well now.

Spirit didn't have renal failure or kidney disease of any kind according to her necropsy, and she seemed to be the picture of health until her sudden death. So, I don't believe at this point that tainted dog food with ingredients from Menu Foods was a factor in her death. When I initially heard about the recall of canned and moist pet foods, I wasn't too concerned for my pets because we only feed dry kibble and cooked chicken and veggies. Then I remembered that I bought several cans of both Science Diet and Iams' brand cat food back in January.

We were so upset and overwhelmed when Angel became so sick just days after Spirit died, and we couldn't figure out why it was happening to her. I don't think that I mentioned it on WS because I didn't want to burden all of you with another tragic death of another of my creatures so soon after Spirit. I did tell a couple of friends via email, though. Because of Angel's symptoms, the timing, that she has never been sick prior to this, and because we could never figure it out, it looks like she may have had some of that tainted food.

If one out six tested pets died from the food, that is huge. News reports still state that 15 cats and 1 dog have died so far. I doubt that if 1 out of 6 pets died during the experiment that there have only been 16 deaths nation wide. There are no doubt countless deaths or severe illnesses that have not yet and may never be connected. I feel so very sad for all of the pets that have died, and I hope that Menu Foods does the next right thing--what ever that may be.
