It doesn't exactly inspire confidence in LE, does it? This talk about a "new direction" in the investigation reeks of desperation, IMO.
I see it more as a major turning point in the investigation. One that will hopefully lead to an arrest. Jmo

I saw it mentioned elsewhere that the "Guys" may have been released with a specific purpose, as well. Maybe he's someone who says it all the time. Maybe he said it many times during the audio we haven't heard, so they specifically wanted that released to make someone think, "Hey, so and so is constantly saying that...."
I don’t know. Everyone in Indiana constantly says “guys.” If he had said something out of the ordinary for the area, like “you all,” I would agree. Personally, I think they just needed to pad their butts while announcing they had us looking for the wrong POI for two years, so they tossed out one more word in audio and 2 seconds of video so we’d have something other than their massive eff up to focus on. And it has worked to a degree. It also created enough buzz to get people talking about the case again.

What's their excuse for the police never showing the second composite to the victims' families in 2 years?
We have a new friend Matthew from Australia who told us that everyone is considered a suspect and LE does not release The evidence they have to family or the public.

I find it interesting that the police haven't issued a safety warning to the public considering they believe he is on the loose in Delphi.

Regardless I wouldn't be going out alone or allowing my children to, but why do they not think he will do this again?

I see nothing but the hood of a sweatshirt on BG's head in the video. The FBI stated he was wearing a "hoodie". How could they be certain if he didn't have a hood visible in the video? I think his sweatshirt is protruding down below his jacket on his right side in the video, which shows it as the same color as what is on his head, and possible his right hand is holding onto something inside the front pocket of the sweatshirt (causing his jacket to ride up.)

But they also threw down the gauntlet of a 2 week timeframe. I hope for everyone's sake (especially the families) that in 2 weeks SOMETHING positive has changed with this case.

Hi All,

I’m from Australia, it just so happens I’m in Law enforcement and have experience with the Policing side of Homicides.

I can across this case from a podcast a few weeks ago, since then I’ve followed along to see how it progresses.

I’ve read a lot of responses from contributors on this thread. Fortunately I can clear a few things up, but unfortunately most of the cyber detectives are over analysing. :)

Remember this, ‘finding’ out who did this crime is half the process. The main process is ensuring a criminal conviction for police.

Therefore, the general public and even the victims families ARE NOT entitled or should be presented with evidence or possible suspects under any circumstances.

All evidence released, including sketches, audio, video, and in this case car siting, is to be done with a specific outcome in mind. e.g produce leads, further evidence, new suspects etc.

I saw people post, “why not release all the audio?”

Well... why, it obviously won’t help produce new leads. And/or the remaining audio evidence could taint jury if released. I understand you want to here and see the evidence, but bluntly, you have no right and all general public are to be treated as possible suspects/witnesses. Remember you aren’t trained investigators.

Finally, I watched the press conference and found it fascinating.

The press conference was directly aimed at speaking to the killer. My guess would be they have a short list of suspects or may even know 98% who it is.

Everything said in that press con was scripted by a FBI Profiler. It is designed to agitate and provoke the killer in to acting differently or saying something to someone that makes them stand out.

I’d also guess they may even have suspects under physical surveillance or recording devices.

Remember again, ITS ALL ABOUT THE CONVICTION. So they may only need some final concrete pieces of evidence.

That would fit in perfectly with the fact it was only 7 weeks ago they had the anniversary press con.

It’s sounds to me like things are very close.

- new audio, need another witness to come forward after recognise.
- new video, same reason as above.
- press con, push killer to say something on phone or start acting erratic, people notice.
- car siting, May need another witness to place killer in car earlier or leaving car. DNA.

My guess is that it was a random event, killer was probably driving past and saw them. Car won’t be registered so that is the reason it can’t be traced back to him and he dumped it. Killers act on impulse, very rare they plan.

Hopefully that helps! Be confident in the police, they are the experts. Let them do their jobs. Time to celebrate will be after the court hearings.

Thanks from Aus!
I agree with a lot of what you said, however I have to disagree with "Killers act on impulse, very rare they plan".

There are many different reasons why people kill. Killings done on impulse are often committed by someone who knows the victim (i.e. domestic violence) or may occur during the commission of another crime (i.e. a robbery). These are often easier to solve because there is a connection between the killer and the victim and there is a "reason" for the murder.

Killings that are more "random" are, in my opinion, more likely to be "stranger on stranger". These may be perceived as having been done on impulse since some people may feel there was no way it could have been planned because the killer and victim may have never met. These type of killings are often viewed as "crimes of opportunity" and are typically more difficult to solve because, other than the crime itself, there is often no connection between the killer and the victim.

However impulsive this type of murder may seem, the killer has often "planned" the crime for a long time - sometimes for years. Some may keep journals detailing their "kill" fantasies, while others may later admit to thinking about committing the crime for an extended period of time. The killer may do many "trial runs" before they actually kill. Unfortunately for the victim, they end up being in the wrong place at the wrong time when the killer finally crosses the line from fantasy to reality.

Here's a quick example: A couple of years ago there was a female Realtor at a new construction Sales Office when a man came in and expressed an interest in the new community and wanted to see the model homes. He wanted the Realtor to show him through the model homes which were adjacent to the Sales Office. She refused, saying she needed to stay in the Sales Office in case other prospective buyers came in but told him he was welcome to walk through the model homes. He was a bit persistent in trying to get her to go with him through the homes and she later said it made her feel uncomfortable.

The man left the office to go through the models by himself and was gone for what the Realtor felt was an unusually long time. He came back into the office and said that one of the sinks was leaking and told the Realtor he wanted to show it to her. She refused to go and said she would contact the builder to check it out. The man was continuing to try to get her to go with him so he could show her the leak when a couple came into the Sales Office. At this time the man hurriedly left, got into a car and drove away. The Realtor was suspicious about his behavior and wrote down the license plate. She then asked the new couple to go with her through the models and they discovered that the man had closed the blinds in the Master Bathroom and Bedroom and there was no leak!

The police were called and they stopped his car to question him. In the trunk of the car he had gym back with zip ties, duct tape and a weapon (knife or gun, I forget). A search of his computer showed he had been fantasizing about raping and murdering a Realtor for several years and, for whatever reason, finally acted upon his fantasy. Although he didn't have a specific victim in mind, the crime itself was planned for several years down to some of the smallest details.

Forgive me if this has been raised before, but could it be that the big change in direction in the investigation is that it has dawned on LE, for whatever reason, that the witness who provided the original BG sketch could possibly actually be the killer diverting attention from himself? Wasn’t there talk early on of a man and a woman on the trail who had ‘seen something’? Is it them?

I agree. What, though?

I think if an arrest is made, it’s going to be shocking revelation.

They had to release the second sketch because the sketch exists.

Any competent defense attorney will state LE failed to fully investigate the person in the second sketch before arresting his or her client (who looks like the first released sketch).

The prosecutor will share with the jury that the second sketch was released and no suspect was found that matched it. The witness who had this sketch drawn could have been mistaken, was too far away to get facial details, or had poor visual acuity.

I totally agree, but why wait 26 months to release it?

So, according to this we now know 3 things:

“the old sketch is no longer a person of interest.

The two sketches do not depict the same person.

Indiana State Police say the new sketch does show the face of the person captured on video on Libby German's cell phone walking on the bridge.”

I’m still confused though. The first sketch looks like the video of BG, however we are now told that the second sketch is BG and the sketches are not of the same person.

Is this because the person in the first sketch doesn’t actually exist? Either because they’ve managed to refine the images to a point that matches the second sketch, or because BG disguised himself to look like the first guy. But then I guess that would make them the same person.

My brain is hurting!

Just now jumping onto this thread since the press conference. Do not know if someone has suggested this so please let me know, but is it possible the sketches are of a father and son? Or some sort of familial relationship? I'm asking because the sketches look so similar when both images are superimposed.

Same. It's not a good feeling. Feeling churny and just wrong, like bad anxiety now over all of this. Something stinks somewhere.

Someone wise and soothing please pop in and settle us down lol get us focused again

Just look 3 to 4 pages back for a shocking answer to your question. ;)
