And that's great, but the truth is, him sitting in jail will not do a thing to change whatever drives his behavior and he will be back in the community and on the roads and in the bars and liquor stores in three years. If he lives that long.

You can't punish people into sobriety and emotional and psychological health.

No. But if their actions threaten the lives and well being of others, you can take away their freedom in order to protect the public.

There's a difference between having an addiction and willfully choosing to put others at risk by engaging in criminal conduct. I'm surprised this is confusing. A person who chooses to get behind the wheel several times while drinking after even one DUI is a criminal who endangers the public.

The law doesn't allow us to lock up such repeat offenders for long. But at least the public gets some reprieve from the menace these individuals are on the roads.

And sometimes they are actually prompted to change their criminal behaviors after being incarcerated, even if they can't recover. Which is the very reason we have these laws.

In other news, have there been further statements by LE related to this case recently?
