There are new developments in the case of missing mother and grandmother Chenell Gilbert. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) tells us this is now a homicide investigation.

The family believes they lost time since police didn’t get a search warrant to the home until days after her disappearance. Now there’s a turn within the investigation.

We assume that she is deceased…Based on her not having any correspondence with her family,” said IMPD Public Affairs, Officer William Young.

“We’re still searching for leads. We encourage the community if you have any tips you can call us at 262-TIPS where you can remain anonymous. Or you can contact our investigators in person or contact them over the phone 327-3475,” said Young.

I do not understand why a warrant wasn't served on the ex right away. Her car was right there! Isn't that probable cause right there?

Also, I used to live in the sub down and across the street from the Sun Gate housing addition. Sun Gate is right off Girls School Road, which is a very busy road, all the time. But Sun Gate itself would be pretty quiet, our sub was. Houses aren't right on top of each other, but smallish lots. And really not a shortcut to anywhere but other subs.

Mother missing for a week, family searching for answers
This case all started after no one saw or heard from the 42-year-old mother on Tuesday, June 9. Her daughter used the "Find my Phone" feature on her mother’s cell and located her car. But the homeowner near where the phone was pinged told Gilbert’s family that she drove to the house but never came inside. When the Gilbert's family asked to take a look around inside, he refused so they ended up calling for police.

HINKY METER!!!!! IMO

Yes. Isn't this the ex-boyfriend's house? I mean, the homeowner says she never came inside and then refuses to let in the family inside EVEN THOUGH HER CAR IN HIS DRIVEWAY. Whew. Nope.

"It’s reported that Chenell Gilbert’s vehicle was found at her ex-boyfriend’s residence sitting in the driveway, however, the length of the investigation into him as a potential person of interest remains unclear. He hasn’t been named in reports, although it should be noted that I was unable to find any updates about this case after November 2020."

Also a quote in which the aunt indicates "concern" upon learning Chenell's phone was last traced to ex's home.

Also, not sure if this allowed by mods (and please let me know if I'm breaking any rules) but there is a petition with almost 5,000 signatures put out by Chenell Gilbert's family about her disappearance.

It's scary to me how absolutely silent media and LE have been about this case for the past year. Bumping for Chenell and her daughters.

Indianapolis woman speaks about search for mother, says more needs to be done to help find missing people of color | wthr.com
CM doesn’t watch videos of her mom every day. That would be too painful.

“I really, really miss her,” the 22-year-old said.

When CM needs to hear her mom’s voice or see her smile, she knows she can, via the videos on her phone.

“I realize she taught me a lot, a lot,” CM said.

Everything except how to handle life without her, and not knowing where she is.

What a beautiful lady.

I just happened to see this thread in 'new posts'. I haven't heard of this case before, which is sad.

I hope her family gets answers soon.

Per the last paragraph on The Charley Project, the ex-boyfriend is no longer a POI:

"According to her loved ones, Gilbert's ex-boyfriend had been abusive to her. However, investigators stated he is no longer a person of interest in her case. She worked as a substitute teacher at the time of her disappearance. Her case remains unsolved and is being investigated as a possible homicide."

I wonder how that came about.

“Anytime we had any cousins come over, she was the one that had all of the cousins coming over,” McCaleb said. “She loved making, planning, events for people. That was kind of like her newest project she was doing at the time.”

A teacher, writer and family event planner, McCaleb says despite her numerous titles, her mother always put her children first. But, for nearly two years, McCaleb has tried to navigate life without her mother.“It hurts because you don’t want anyone’s family to go through anything like this,” she said.

IMPD has presumed she is dead, and investigators are currently looking at the case as a homicide. Today, her whereabouts are still unknown.

Along with her daughters, Gilbert also leaves behind a grandson, who was only a couple months old at the time of her disappearance.

The disappearances of Chenell Gilbert, Nakyla Williams and Paris Williamson, who was later found safe, are some of the cases involving missing Black women that received significant local attention within the last couple of years.

“We want all persons, who are reported missing, to be covered and treated equally,” said Captain Christopher Boomershine with IMPD.

[...]

“Where we see cases glamorized, in my opinion and this is my opinion, is at the national level,” he added. “I see them glamorized certain type, call it a ‘beauty queen’ type, missing persons case.”

When it comes to helping cases get media exposure, families can also ask the investigating detective to request media coverage.

Even on social media, Wilson says a simple share or repost can go a long way, along with sharing them directly to news outlets.

“See who’s missing from your state, your community, and like the post on social media, share it,” she said. “Don’t wait for the cases to go viral, we need the media to help us to make these cases go viral.”
