Boy, 8, dies of drug overdose after mistaking meth for cereal as dad charged

A hungry eight-year-old boy died of an accidental drug overdose after allegedly mistaking meth for cereal.

Curtis Collman III had 180 times over the lethal limit of methamphetamine in his bloodstream when he fell ill on June 21.

Police were called to his grandparents home in Crothersville, Indiana, and he was taken to Schneck Medical Center where he later died.

His father, Curtis Collman II, 41, faces numerous counts that include neglect of a dependent causing death, pointing a firearm, possession of methamphetamine and intimidation after police say his son, Curtis Collman III, ingested a large amount of meth. He is also charged with failing to maintain his sex offender registration status.

Collman later admitted to police while there was no food, he did have methamphetamine in the house and that he’d left some on a plate, WDRB reports.

It’s also alleged that Collman refused to seek medical treatment for his son over fears he’d be sent to prison.

So, both father and son were living with grandparents and there was no food in the house. Grandparents should be charged too.

I think it was a bit different (BBM):
That female friend told police that when she arrived at the home shortly before 11 a.m., the boy was on the floor of the garage and said he was having trouble with his vision and that it looked like there were two of her. She said she talked to the boy and sang to him in an effort to calm him down, then told Collman that he needed to call 911 and get the boy to a hospital.

But she said Collman refused. He ripped the phone out of her hand and told her that he wasn't going back to prison again. She said he then left the room, only to return with a silver handgun, pointing it at her and telling her that he would kill all three of them.
Collman's mother told police that he arrived with the boy at about 1 p.m., and she wanted to call 911, but Collman "became upset" and said they were not going to call 911.

Collman told police that at this point, the boy was so stiff that they couldn't move him. He also started turning blue and he tried to perform CPR on the child.

At some point during this visit, Collman's mother said a man in the home called 911 and then he left. She said Collman returned a short time later, "hysterical, crying and acting crazy." She said he hugged the child, begged him not to leave him, and said he was going to kill himself. He then drove away.

Thank you for that info.

As a matter of interest, what does meth look like that it can be mistaken for breakfast cereal by a child?

In this case it was brownish in color.
Cops added: “Methamphetamine can be brownish in colour, and crystal-like.

“One officer commented the brown crystal on the plate could have been mistaken for cereal crumbs with no lights in the apartment.”

Oh, that poor little boy. I still wonder about the grandparents though. I wonder if they knew that he was living in a house with no food and no lights?

I have never tasted meth, and don't want to. I wonder if it has any flavor? Poor child must have been starving to willingly eat it for food. I guess he could have been forced to eat it, but I doubt Dad would want to share his meth....

Senseless murder. Drug addiction is sad.

It tastes like super sour, burning styrofoam. It's quite disgusting and I can honestly say I have never in my life imagined anyone would ever, under any circumstance, mistake it for breakfast cereal.

One of the things meth does (for most people) is it kills the appetite. Maybe dad actually did force the boy to eat it, because he was possibly complaining about being hungry??

"According to authorities, Collman told investigators that his son woke him up on the morning of June 21, saying that he was hungry. Collman said he told the child that there was nothing to eat in the house and then went back to sleep. Later, he said, his son woke him up again, but “was not acting right,” according to the probable cause affidavit."
Father of 8-year-old who ate meth and died refused to call 911, police say

Hmm. This really does make me wonder if he forced that boy to eat it. No one would willingly eat meth, it tastes absolutely horrible.
