This story just gets stranger and stranger.

So. He was in custody, apparently BEFORE Serena was abducted?

June 16, 2011 Man arrested in connection with missing great-grandmother

Sex offender nabbed after fleeing from police

By Brandi Watters The Herald Bulletin
ELWOOD, Ind. — A convicted sex offender has been arrested after fleeing police when they sought to question him Tuesday about missing Noblesville grandmother Dorothy Heard.

Donald J. Burns, 47, was arrested by Elwood police after a short chase.

He has twice been convicted of child molesting.

According to a police probable cause affidavit, the Noblesville Police Department contacted Elwood police and asked them to check if Dorothy Heard was at or had been at Burns’ home.

Heard, 74, was reported missing from her Noblesville home Tuesday. Later that evening, her great-granddaughter, Serena Weicht, 10, was abducted by an unidentified white male while riding her bicycle in Tipton.

Weicht was found unharmed at a Westfield Wendy’s restaurant shortly at 11 p.m. Tuesday.

Heard remains missing. Her vehicle and purse were left in her home and police have said they have no leads in the case.

According to Elwood Detective Scott Bertram, Burns jumped into his car and fled from police when they arrived at his home just after 5 p.m. Tuesday.

If I understand correctly. Police wanted to question Burns about the missing Dorothy. Nothing to do with Serena. Heard was reported missing on Tuesday before Serna was abducted at 6:30.

Burns was at his home Tuesday at 5pm. Police arrive to talked to him and he jumped in his car and fled. He was arrested when his car stalled.

Despite the fact his car matches the description of the abductor's, it appears it could not have been Burns.

Jeeze, that got confusing!!

While the investigation continues into Dorothy Heard's disappearance, her nephew remains in the Madison County Jail on an unusually high quarter-million-dollar bond. Burns also turned down our request for an interview.

A high-ranking law enforcement source says that Burns was questioned by FBI agents and Noblesville Police but stopped cooperating early Thursday. A friend of Heard's, who asked not to be identified, also says that Burns was with his aunt shortly before she vanished.

"The last we knew, Dorothy left a note on her door saying that she was going to the cemetary with him to visit her husband's grave and that was the last anyone see of her," said an unidentified friend.

I think Serena and Grandma is connection. The one thing that been bothering me is why no warning to parents that a predator is on the loose.

  • #28
There may be a connection, as Serena told her parents that the man had a cell phone call while driving around. Perhaps 2 in contact, him and the one who took the Grandma. Sounds plausible, otherwise who in the world kidnaps a child and then gets on the telephone?

Arcadia, Ind.—
Police confirmed Thursday that they have arrested a person of interest in the case of a missing Noblesville woman. The announcement came during a search for 74-year-old Dorothy Heard near a park in Hamilton County.
Police said they arrested 47-year-old Donald Burns of Elwood Tuesday evening. They said they attempted to approach Burns when he gave chase. He was arrested on a charge of resisting law enforcement.

According to police, Burns is a convicted sex offender known to fish at Overdorf Lake Fish Camp Park. We've come across some stuff that is important we think to a certain extent," Barnes said.

Important enough for officers, K9 units and choppers to comb the woods and lake for more than eight hours at a remote campground near where Burns spent many a late night fishing.

Those that know him, have only good things to say. "As far as I'm concerned, he's an alright man. Come fishing here in past years. He has not been here this season," campground owner Roy Overdorf said.

Guess Mr. Overdorf doesn't know that Burns is a twice-convicted sexually violent child molester.

Child Molester + Children at a Campground = :banghead:

I can't help but wonder what the nephew is doing back on the streets after being convicted of child molestation. I hope he didn't kill the great-grandma.

Child Molesters tend to stick together. I'm betting Burns knows this person very well.

Serena said her abductor received a cell phone call while he had her. I'm assuming LE has requested Burns cell phone records or even have possession of his phone. Hoping that one of the numbers he dialed will lead to the person who took Serena.

I still think there is some sort of link, but I've been wrong before.

Theory:

DB had been molesting SW, maybe for some time. DH knew, or at least suspected, but didn't say anything.

The whole "SW is missing/now she's back" thing happens, and now DH is thinking about the safety of her grandchild. DB is worried that DH is going to talk to the police, and she goes "missing."
