This is heartbreaking. rbbm.

''One of the few people who survived the shooting was Childs' 15-year-old brother, who officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds on the front porch of the family's house in the 3500 block of Adams Street.
The teen was immediately taken to the hospital in critical condition.

After surviving his surgery, the teen told police of the events that led up to the shooting and he heard their father say, "I'm sorry Raymond; I love you," before being shot by Childs, according to court documents.

Before Childs shot his brother, the teen explained that he pleaded with his big brother to not shoot him, "I can give you 40 dollars. I won't say nothing. Please don't kill me," according to court documents.''

Absolutely heartbreaking. I hope this young man is doing as best can be under the circumstances and surrounded by lots of love and support.

Absolutely heartbreaking. I hope this young man is doing as best can be under the circumstances and surrounded by lots of love and support.
I remember reading this story some time ago. For some reason, I thought the girlfriend that was killed was Raymond's and wondered what happened. I know see that it wasn't his girlfriend. The rage to go and attack his loved ones while they were in bed. Seems his dad was trying to steer him down the right path with no overnight visits with his young girlfriend. I've seen a few mug shots in which the suspect looks as if they have been crying, perhaps remorseful for what they've done. There is nothing for this young man. And to think, he put his family through a trial.

Oct 30, 2024 Law&Crime Sidebar with Jesse Weber
A jury in Indiana convicted Raymond Childs III of killing his parents, siblings, and the woman pregnant with his nephew in January 2021. He was just 17 years old at the time of the murders. Prosecutors say it was all because he was denied permission to sleep at his girlfriend’s home. Childs, now 19, will be sentenced in January. Law&Crime’s Jesse Weber analyzes the case with criminal defense attorney and former prosecutor Bob Bianchi.

Key points about presentence reports in Indiana:
  • Statute: Indiana Code 11-13-1-8(b)(4) outlines the requirement for a presentence investigation report.

  • Who prepares it: A probation officer is responsible for creating the presentence investigation report.

  • When it is used: The report is used by the judge to inform their sentencing decision.

I think the delay in sentencing RC-III could be related to him being age 17 at the time of the offense where several states have enacted legislation prohibiting LWOP for offenders who were at least 16 yrs old but less than 18 yrs old at the time of the alleged offense.

It doesn't mean RC-III won't in-fact spend his life in prison-- depending on his behavior while an inmate, but most likely be given a life term where he is eligible for parole consideration after serving, for example, a minimum of 40 years. Then again, he might be sentenced to serve consecutive terms for each victim and where his eligibility would be increased to let's say 70 years and/or where the minimum will likely exceed his natural life while in prison.
