Friday, April 3rd:
*Sentencing Hearing (Blackwell Case) (@ 8:30am CT) - IN – Javon Blackwell (42), his sons Javon, Jr. (12) & Jayzon (11) (Dec. 30, 2018, Marion) – only for *Lemere Joseph Jones (29/now 30) arrested & charged (1/28/19) with 3 counts of murder, conspiracy to commit armed robbery & armed robbery in connection with 3 deaths. Plead not guilty. Held without bond. Grant County Superior Court #27D01-1901-MR-00003-3 counts murder
Bench Trial began on 3/10/20-Blackwell-found guilty of all charges.
3/2/20: Hearing held on State's Motion to Amend Charging Information. Defense has no objection. Court grants such motion. Trial for 3/9 has been cancelled, reason: waiver of hearing by party. Now set for bench trial on 3/10/20.
3/10/20 Tuesday Day 1: Bench trial held. Court now issues verdict of: Guilty of Count 1, Murder, a felony; Guilty of Count 2, Murder, a felony; Guilty of Count 3, Murder, a felony; Guilty of Count 4, Armed Robbery, a Level 3 felony; and, Guilty of Count 5, Conspiracy to Commit Armed Robbery, a Level 3 felony. Court now orders a Presentence Investigation Report to be prepared & filed. Counsel to coordinate sentencing hearing date with Court Reporter. Defendant is remanded to the custody of the Grant County Sheriff pending sentencing. Sentencing on 4/3.
*Charged with robbery & possession of firearm at Family Dollar store on 12/23/18. Grant County #27D01-1901-F3-000004-Robbery; #27D01-1901-F6-00029-Resist arrest
Trial was set to begin on 3/16/20 continued to 6/29/20-Robbery
6/10/19 Update: Trial was continued. Next Robbery etc. charge pretrial hearing on 8/22, trial set for 9/23. 3 Murders: next pretrial hearing on 8/29, trial set for 9/30. Robbery: pretrial hearing on 2/13/20 @ 8:30am & trial starts 3/16/20 @ 1pm.
3/16/20 Update: Trial has been continued to 6/29.

Victims speak out after triple murder conviction from 2018 carries nearly 200-year sentence


Lemere Joseph Jones will serve nearly 200 years in prison for his part in a triple homicide in 2018.

“The bottom line is a serious offender murdered a father and his two sons,” Todd said. “... Mr. Jones should never again be a free man.”

The Blackwells’ loved ones thanked Todd after the sentence was announced.

During the sentencing, friends and family of the Blackwells’ testified, sharing memories of the boys and questioning how a person could murder children.

Jo Messner recalled how much family means to Diana Wilson, mother of Javon Jr. and Jayzon.

Jones interrupted Messner’s testimony, claiming he was not the one that killed the boys.

“Don’t say me, I didn’t do that,” Jones yelled.

Todd warned Jones to settle down and stop disrupting the courtroom, asking his attorney Jerry T. Drook to have a talk with him.

Jones refused to talk with his attorney and was escorted out of the courthouse.

After being removed from the courthouses, Jones was brought back via a video conference.

He declined to give testimony during the hearing.

After receiving his sentences, Jones said he would be appealing, initially saying he would hire a private attorney or represent himself.

Ultimately, Jones said he would like to be appointed a public defender, asking for his next attorney not to be Drook.

Jones is entitled to a credit of 449 actual days for time served while awaiting trial.
