As of yesterday, Jennifer has been missing for 38 years.
i really can't believe this case is still open; i just saw it while searching for some other info. i lived in west lafayette from 81 to 88 and it seemed fairly common knowledge what had happened. it was more of a case of "how can we prove it". i would have thought what with the advances in forensics they would have brought the guy to justice since then.
i am so sorry for her family.
Lafayette is only just over an hours drive from Wabash Indiana where Larry Hall was born and lived all his life, Both are on the Wabash river, and Larry Hall disposed of several of his victims in rivers. He knew the Wabash river well, and travelling an hour and a quarter but still in his home state and on the river he knew all make it more likely that he could be the killer. And he claimed responsibility for Jennifer Schmidt's murder.Larry Hall the serial killer and civil war reenactor has confessed to murdering Jennifer, and it was his m.o. to stalk and follow female students on campus in his Dodge van, either chatting to them, luring them to speak to him or just pulling them inside his van where he anesthetised them. I suspect this murder of Jennifer could be his first murder, he had sexually assaulted girls previously and may had attempted to kidnap girls previously. Larry Hall would have been 22 at the time. Two murders in 1981, of Deanie Pyle Peters and Debra Jean Cole have also been attributed to Larry Hall, but Hall, of low IQ, would only have been 17 for these murders and Cole is likely to have been murdered by her mothers boyfriend who raped and murdered her sister two years later.
It would be good to find out if any other students at Perdue University in 1985 to 1994 remember being followed or stalked or remember a Dodge Van in the area, if this was Halls first murder he may not have been very good at stalking and students might remember him as he was unusual to look at with prominent sideburns for his reenacting.
