Whenever someone goes missing along with their car my immediate thought is that they're in water, but I don't know if his planned travel route that night took him past any larger bodies of water. It's always possible the car was stolen and later dumped but even most of those are eventually found. This is a sad case, I hope the family can get some answers soon.
To your point - a family member in Mishawaka used to fish the St. Joe river weekly, always launching his boat in the same spot. One day he cannot access the river as they are pulling a long submerged car from his exact fishing spot. It had been there unnoticed for over a decade.

I'm convinced that if we could drain every single body of water on earth for just a day, we could solve dozens of missing person cold cases. One of my pet cases was that of Kyle Clinkscales, who went missing in 1976...they finally found his car (with him in in) in 2021. I know there are many more cases like his out there!

Sadly, my cousin Lenny was almost the list of 'missing with their vehicle'. He got turned around coming home from a business meeting out of state and drove down a boat launch- because we all know they look almost exactly like two-lane roads. The only reason he is not still missing today is a woman was letting her dogs out and heard the car hit the water. It drifted some 90 feet out into the reservoir, and he drowned.

I'm so sorry your family had to go through such a loss but I'm glad that you didn't have to wonder what happened to him...I don't know how families of the long-term missing manage to go on with their lives. The not knowing has to drive them crazy.

I think there's a good chance the vehicle's in a body of water too, there is a lot of it.
A few different groups have also looked into that. Adam & jeremy searched the river in 2022, Doug bishop searched a pond on E douglas rd and cottage pkwy, Chaos divers searched too I believe.
Some unrelated cars have been found just through imagery, I found a truck in a pond on N fir road, Shelly of sunshine state sonar found a car in a pond on S Elder St and E 3rd street, both unrelated and have been pulled/checked out.

There's a few articles of vehicles crashing into ponds in the area, you can even see one with tire tracks in 2023 imagery along Edison Lakes Pkwy where it looks like one was pulled out. With the other vehicles being visible in ponds maybe they would be here too if there were any, I'm not sure.

I wish there was more info on where else he could have been, like the area the friend lived. He's said to have spent most of his time in Elkhart County, so maybe there?
