could he have got into a truck at a rest stop and be hiding?

I remember a few years ago, when a boy about this age who had autism and probably also Fragile X Syndrome got lost while hiking, and he kept running FROM rescuers because he had been told not to approach strangers.

I worried about this too. Or even if he hasn't been told not to approach them, that it may scare him off seeing so many unfamiliar people that he'll stay hidden.

Praying hard that he's just scared and hiding somewhere. I hope folks in the area are remaining vigilant/checking cameras and around their property etc like police have asked.

The local residents are out every day and there has been a tremendous turnout for volunteer ground searches. Unfortunately, law enforcement has advised that the search is focused on the water. The area is surrounded by a river, a swamp, and expressway. So all of the areas surrounding the hotel are treacherous. There have been rumored sightings but nothing official.

Businesses have been searched. Law enforcement is looking through camera footage. Unfortunately, the outlook is getting more and more grim. But stranger things have happened.

How very sad this is.
Have they been able to bring in a dog team?

My heart absolutely breaks for the mom. You just know that caring for him as been her entire existence since he was born. I'm just aching for her.

There have been dogs out on the boats on the water.
Unfortunately with so many out searching, LE states that it complicates the dog picking up a scent. It's in one of the articles I posted but he mentions that the dogs picked up scent both along the water and while out on the search boats.

His family has been very active in the public FB group and given ideas on foods he likes (chicken nuggets, oreos but he calls them black cookies, he's drawn to the color pink and loves the song Love on top by Beyonce.) Also that he loves balloons, so some searches were gathering pink balloons to take out while they search.

I know that the public means well with searching but I hope they are also coordinating with LE. Everyone wants to help but I'm afraid it could be a little chaotic and could scare him into staying hidden.

I hope this works. If not, there's a fresh print in the mud that his family believes could be his - and that he's scared and hiding

Residents join search for missing 12-year old boy, Kyrin Carter, in Hammond: ‘The ultimate goal is to find him safe’

RSBM.

As the days continue to add up and Kyrin Carter remains missing, the determination of residents from surrounding communities to find the boy has yet to waiver.

A group of Highland residents ended up gathering Tuesday night at Plaza Lanes bowling center, which is on Kennedy Avenue just south of the Little Calumet River, not far from the area where the 12-year-old autistic boy disappeared May 15.

The mission for the residents was to continue searching along the stretch of river near the Best Western Hotel in Hammond’s Hessville section, said Janice Rebey, who went out there with her daughter and son-in-law. The group ended up at Main Square Park, where a Highland Police officer shared a touching moment with Kyrin’s mom, Danielle Duckworth, and two of her aunts, witnesses said.

Four full days for this sweet kiddo. It sounds like his family has gotten a lot of info out that could help. Ive seen he is unable to read or recognize words but can/does he communicate orally? Sign language? Non-communicative?

zero blame on his family, but was he looking forward to going somewhere and slipped out thinking he could get there on his own? If they were visiting family, was he headed to their house? Was he tried of the trip and ready to go home? Did he see a McDonald’s and was told he could get chicken nuggets later? Was he irritated or overwhelmed with the trip and looking for something familiar, possibly a playground, or school?

Is hard to imagine seeing him obviously underdressed, lost, scared and no one notifying LE. I hope some of the suspected sighting can be verified. Little guy must be terrified..

I have to say that Kyrin's family is doing exactly what I think they should be doing. Out in the open, taking negative hits yet keeping his name in the Media. I'm praying for him to be found safe and soon. I'm holding onto hope right along with them. PRAYING!

I don't have the answers to all of this but I can answer some. He's considered nonverbal (my son is too) so he can say some words but not really carry on conversation, if that makes sense. His family has said that he'll say some of their names and that he does well with pictures (I'm guessing he may use PECS communication of some sort.)

One thing that would be interesting to know is if he hums or sticks vocally. My son does this - so while he can't say many words, he's almost always humming or making different sounds. It would be impossible for my kiddo to hide and not be heard.

I need to grab a link, but I just watched a quick interview with his dad and he did say that Kyrin got out on their first day there as well. I didn't know this until he said it while talking to a reporter.

So far the sightings weren't able to be confirmed. :(

Editing to add - his dad's interview.

I believe that some children just bolt. It isn’t always rational to us, like your McDonald’s example. JMO from limited experience. I wonder if these kind of “runners” are able to recognize clues like a McDonalds once they calm down? “Calm down” might not be the right phrase...I’m thinking of kids who may bolt as a sensory reaction (noise, light, etc.) but I don’t think stress is necessarily the reason for some kids to run. JMO based on limited experience w/ elopement.

Overload, frustration, and boredom are the top 3 for the runners in our school system

Unfamiliar surroundings.
Sensory overload perhaps from normal hotel noise.
Change in everyday schedule.
Could be any number of reasons.

‘This Child is Still With Us:' Family Continues Search for Missing 12-Year-Old in Hammond

For a fifth day, police, parents and volunteers continued to search for a 12-year-old boy who was reported missing over the weekend in suburban Hammond.

Kyrin Carter, who is on the autism spectrum, was last seen at approximately 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the Best Western, located on 179th Street near Interstate 80/94, according to police. Surveillance footage captured Kyrin, who was wearing a blue short-sleeve shirt, blue shorts and no shoes, walking away from the hotel.

Hammond police say they’ve followed up on two potential sightings, but neither ultimately led to the return of Carter to his family.

This is heartbreaking. I don’t have anything insightful to add, my Heart goes out to his parents.

I looked a map of the area to see where my son would go, does anyone know if they’ve searched to the west? There are semi truck trailers parked there and looks like maybe some storage containers.

The water terrifies me.
