73-year-old former police chaplain arrested for molestation of 8-year-old

The girl told police the sexual abuse, including rape, happened more than 100 times over the last one to two years, the court documents say.

Police on Wednesday arrested Sylvester “Leroy” Driscoll, 73. Beyond the former work with Southport police, he’d also worked with Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department as a civilian employee for more than 20 years before leaving in 2019.

I suspect that is the case. 100 times is not an occasional thing and would as you say, require unfettered access:

The child described the abuse to police as “gross.” She said she was forced to watch when she was 5 years old.

This useless waste of space has been a part of my family since before I was born. I have always had a strange feeling about the man I didn't like him when I was little and would not let my girls near him when they were little, And yes it was a family member that he did this to for at least 3 years of her little life starting at age 5. They are apparently looking into other possible cases he may be involved in. I have also found out that another very close family member of his left the family at the age of 17 because of him. It appears that the issues with this little girl (the child involved in bringing the charges) began shortly after his wife died and it took place in his house. He has spoke with other people in my family said that he is looking at 40 years. He also recently said that he has a new girlfriend I hope she is very aware of his proclivity for young children and I pray that she doesn't have grandchildren or other family members that she allows him around. He was also known as the singing police officer and for many many years played Santa in his local area. I have also found that several churches on YouTube still have posts of him performing at their Church.

Welcome @marisaann I'm so sorry this has affected your family so personally. I can't imagine how troubling this is to all of you. I agree, I hope his new girlfriend is fully apprised of the risks involved in being with such a [self censor]

In looking at the docket it appears he has a final pretrial hearing set for 9/24/25 and trial is on track to begin 9/30/25. He has apparently requested a jury trial which makes me wonder if he intends to attempt to garner sympathy from a jury because of his age, or try to excuse his behavior as the onset of dementia. I think he will have trouble getting a jury to buy that since his child SA was so egregious and over so many years.

My continued rayers for his brave little victim. I hope she is receiving all the love, compassion, counseling and other support she needs to move pat the trauma she experienced.
