Micek went to the Bear's Den in the 100 block of north Michigan Street South Bend, Indiana on May 4, 1989. Between 3:00 and 3:30 a.m., he called his mother and asked her to pick him up. She told him to come home in a cab instead.

He called back about ten minutes later and again asked her to come get him. He sounded anxious at the time. Micek's mother again refused to pick him up. He has never been heard from again.

Micek may have been arrested several times for driving under the influence in 1993, four years after his disappearance. Authorities also received a tip that his body was inside in a barrel in a quarry in Mishawaka, Indiana, but the lead did not pan out.

He lived on Fox Street in South Bend at the time of his disappearance. His current whereabouts are unknown and his case remains unsolved.

Mother hoping for answers in son's 1989 disappearance
New information comes out in missing person cold case

BERRIEN COUNTY, Mich. (WNDU) - New information has come forward in a 31-year-old murder case that has police searching for skeletal remains on a farm in Berrien County.
The property lies outside of Coloma off Kerlikowske Road and its a long way from where the victim was last known to be.
Back in May of 1989, the victim phoned the South Bend home of his mother, from a South Bend bar known as the Bear’s Den. It was 3:00 in the morning and 22-year-old Sargent Micek was looking for a ride home.
Micek’s mother told him she would pay if he took a cab. That’s the last relatives ever heard from Micek.
Now 31 years later, new information on his possible whereabouts has come forward.
“This time we have a source that gave us some information that, this person has a intimate knowledge that there was some activity up here back in 1989. Not that that person was here, but had just heard conversation, that sort of thing,” said the Assistant Commander of the St Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit Dave Wells.
“The word is is that heavy equipment was used when he was buried.”
Police hired an excavator that dug its first hole 18 feet deep.
Some bones were discovered but they were determined to be of the animal variety by volunteer anthropologists from Western Michigan University.
Volunteers from Notre Dame used ground penetrating radar to identify soil that has been disturbed in the past—so police would know where to dig next.
The victim’s mother is still alive and has been very interested in seeing the crime solved.
“His mother, his sister you know they’ve been leaving the porch light on every day waiting for him to come home. (His mother) hasn’t changed her number for 30 years hoping he would call you know. That pain never goes away,” Wells told 16 News Now.
Past tips lead to a past dig and even a dive to try and locate Micek’s skeletal remains, but neither of those searches were successful.

I live in this area, and I just got interested in Sarge’s case, I would love to know if anyone has any new information. I’m very curious about the DUI in 93.. wouldn’t there be mugshots? Was it ever disclosed where the DUI took place? I just find it odd this isn’t talked about much with this case.

Hello everyone I am new here, I just want to post about this case every where I can. Because I believe answers can be provided. Sargent Micek 22 went missing outside a bar in 1989 in south bend IN. This is my area, and his family wants answers. I have some theories and questions myself but I want to hear what other people think. Thank you!

I will copy the most recent Facebook post from a family member of Sarge that gives the run down of his situation then provide links:

I am pleading for someone to come forward with answers on the disappearance of my cousin Sargent

"Sarge" Scott Micek. Sarge went missing from the former Bear's Den in the 100 block of N. Michigan St in South Bend. He called his mother around 3 a.m.

requesting a ride home and he was told to take a cab and was never heard from or seen again. We know someone out there has to know something. I know speaking up is hard; but please understand if this was your family you would want closure. His mother has been wanting to lay her son to rest for almost 35 years now but is unable to because no one will come forward and tell us what happened and where he is. Today I was in contact with Detective Bruno Maitinsky of the South Bend Police Department and he went over his file on the phone with me and gave me information that could help solve this case! (I was given permission from the detective to share this information.) The information is in the next paragraph below.

Sarge's friend stated he got into a dark or cream colored Lincoln sedan with 2 subjects in it. The vehicle left in an unknown direction and Sarge was never seen or heard from again.

Sargent Scott Micek Date of Birth: January 29, 1967

Date of Disappearance: May 4, 1989 Height: 5'7" V Weight: 165lbs Hair Color: Light/medium brown hair.

Eye Color: Blue Distinguishing Features: Sarge had a mustache at the time of his disappearance.

Clothing: Sarge was wearing a black leather jacket with Western Southern in white letters. He was in a black shirt and wearing black pants.

Sarge was at Cap 'n Corks (now Corby's Irish Pub) before he went to the Bears Den. If you saw him there please tell us what you saw and who he was with..

Please anyone come forward with information. My Aunt Norma deserves closure.

If you have any information you can contact Detective Bruno Maitinsky at (574)-235-9204. You can also submit an anonymous tip with Michiana Crime Stoppers at (574)-288-STOP

There is a cash reward for this case.

Below I am attaching links with more information on his case. No leads have ever resulted in Sarge being found and I promised my Aunt Norma I will do my best to bring her the closure she deserves. Please help our family and share this.

@TTLynn11 - I tried searching for court cases here:

But came up blank. Possibly records don’t go back to 1993. If you’re local, you might go to your local courthouse, or call, and see if you can find out if there are any extant records that way.

Also in re: the DUIs: the Doe Network says

“When a check was run in 2004 on his driver's license, it showed he was picked up for a couple of DUIs in 1993.”

That said, we don’t know where they may have occurred [if they did]. I’m assuming South Bend or Indiana more broadly, but possibly not?

Looks like we have an existing thread for him here:

So I’ll ask a mod to merge this thread into that one.
Awesome thank you!! That’s cool that we can do that.

Yes, this is what I am so stuck on today. The DUIs found in 2004 from 1993 are not mentioned in the families Facebook posts, they aren’t talked about in an interview I saw with his sister. But to me, that’s huge! Because were they not arresting people for DUIs in the 90s? lol wouldn’t he have gotten arrested, booked etc. I have soooo many questions about that. Because I can find no other information about the DUIs. Not where they took place or anything.

Yes I looked at mycase too and it was blank. That has me wondering if DUIs fall off your record after a certain amount of time (I’m actually not sure just guessing) because I have used mycase to search a family member and his records from the 90s were on there. (Granted those were felonies so it may be different). But yes, I do want to find out what local information I can find!

Could it be possible he’s living under the name Scott Micek?

I also see his eye color is listed as blue but that doesn’t show in the photos provided. Not sure if cameras picked that up back then or they are actually brown.

That’s interesting! I actually haven’t really thought about the alive theory (not to be morbid) but I definitely want to view all theories

If there is a DUI that popped up after he was last heard from I would think that there is a possibility that he could be alive.

Recently Sheila Fox was found alive and well after 52 years so I feel it brings hope to some cases!

I did a free trial for local newspaper archive and I thought this article piece from 1994 was very interesting. Because this is the only place I have ever read that he might not have made it to the bears den. But I thought he was seen leaving the bears Den in the dark or cream Lincoln? Unless that information comes after 94.
Another thing I find interesting is he frequented Cap N Cork (now known as corbys) but the owner claims he doesn’t know him? And a PI can’t find his nephew that Sarge hung out with. Scott west. What’s interesting about this is on the south bend Indiana Reddit thread about Sarge, two people say that looking into corbys owner is a good idea because he was involved in a lot of sketchy stuff. I am pretty sure cap N Cork and corbys have been owned by the same people this whole time. Very interesting

All this is pure speculation but I’m hesitant to believe that any record of him post 1989 means that he was alive after his disappearance. There have been many cases where a missing persons debit card for example, was flagged, and it was found to be in someone else’s possession, sometimes in a different state.

I also think it would be important to look into the possibility that Micek might have also gotten into some risky stuff as well.

If he was a frequent attendee of this bar, and the owner who has some shady dealings suddenly cannot remember him. Well, I’m inclined to wonder if perhaps Micek ended up being recruited or was somehow involved with these dealings as well.

All of this to say,It sounds like he really needed someone else to come pick him up at the bar to ensure his safety.

The article states that he never expressed any fear on the phone call. That doesn’t necessarily mean he wasn’t afraid. He may have been trying to keep his cool, remaining focused on trying to find a way out of his predicament.

I know when I experienced a moment of true fear, I became very focused, leaving little room for any sort of manic or emotional expression. I was only fully able to process it emotionally once I got out of my predicament. (I was stalked aggressively by a cougar in the Canadian wilderness it was terrifying)

I am of the opinion, that the two phone calls to his mom does in fact suggest a sense of urgency.

Although he arrived at the bar alone, I think something happened, or he was met with someone that then made it clear to him that he needed to leave with someone else to ensure his safety. I think, in that moment, he knew he could not leave alone, and he knew he could not leave with whoever was offering to give him a ride.

I hope any land connected to them is searched heavily. Or someone finally speaks out. These sort of things rarely happen in a vacuum.

I wish you luck in finding him.

Thank you for your input!! I agree I do not think he is alive, I think these DUIs from 94 was potential stolen identity or something like that. I guess I just wish it was said like “we did figure out the DUIs in 94 we’re not sarge” I guess I just wish I had more information without feeling like a crazy person idk. I’m so invested. And now more than ever, I am invested in the theory that the owner of this cap n corks (corbys) know something. The owner of McCormicks bar (a bar next door to the bar known as bears den) also has said he does not like the corbys owner. I want to know why. I want to know what the people know.
