Family offers $1,000 reward in search for Hobart mother missing since July

The family of a missing Hobart woman has offered a $1,000 reward for information leading to her return.

It has been months since relatives have heard from Shannon Orton, 37, who is a mother of two, her family said.

Orton was reported missing Sept. 30 by a relative, who said Orton was last seen July 5 in the 600 block of West 37th Avenue, Hobart police Capt. James Gonzales said.

The woman's family has since posted the $1,000 reward in hopes of finding her, said her sister-in-law, Jody Summit. Family said the last sighting of Orton was on July 12 in Portage, and she may also be in the Hobart or Gary areas.

At 7:44 p.m. on July 12, she was sighted at a CVS pharmacy at Lute and Willow creek Road in Portage, Indiana. She was accompanied by an unidentified Caucasian woman wearing a black skirt or dress and black flip-flops; a video surveillance image of the woman available.

Orton didn't have a cellular phone at the time of her disappearance.

PORTAGE, Ind. - An investigation has been launched after the remains of a woman who had been missing since 2020 were recently discovered in Portage.

Portage police announced Wednesday the remains of Shannon Orton were discovered recently within city limits.

"PORTAGE, Ind. — A missing woman’s remains were found in Portage. Shannon Orton went missing in the summer of 2020 from the Cressmoor Mobile Home Park in Hobart. Her remains were discovered Dec. 17 in a wooded area near Highway 249 and Highway 94 in Portage. The remains were identified by dental records and x-rays. A cause of death is currently undetermined."

Police are asking the public’s help with information and said there are multiple suspects. Anyone with information can call the detective at 219-764-5707.
