Matthew Dirig was arrested after court documents say Ashlee Cochrane arrived home on Nov. 22 and found her 8-year-old son, Theodore “Theo” Cochrane, dead in his room.

Dirig was watching Theo that day, and court documents say he told officers the boy was being aggressive so he locked him in his room and went and played video games. Cochrane said she later came home and found the boy dead, locked in his room with a zip tie around his neck.

Court documents say the doctor who performed the autopsy said they could not immediately determine a cause of death, but could not rule out homicide. He noted that research concerning suicide shows it would be difficult for a small child to apply adequate tension, saying it appears a pulling force was applied from the back of his neck.

Dirig was then arrested and charged with one count of neglect of a dependent resulting in death.

Now, prosecutors tell 21Alive that Cochrane is charged with neglect of a dependent and child endangerment in connection with her son’s death.

Dirig is set to appear for a jury trial in January 2024.

I totally believe Dirig was playing video games. [no sarcasm]

Did I read that correctly- they think it's even remotely possible an 8-year-old could have done that to himself? No way on Earth. This poor kid, Theo, would have suffered so much. IMO the charges aren't adequate.

I wonder why his mother is also facing charges. I can think of a few possible reasons, but let's see...

I don't think the boy did this...why would he? JMO, but does seem to me that method would not be top of the list for ways to commit suicide, esp. a child.

I predict there's a history of the boyfriend being a loser and that mom also has a history of both being a loser herself and attracting loser partners. As usual- The writing was probably on the wall here

There had to be red flags.
My opinion a lot of men have zero relationship or compassion for the child of another man and they take it out on the helpless child.

Not feeling very sorry for this mom, and it looks like they have evidence to charge her for neglect.
Wonder what physical state the 8 year old was in ?
Malnourished ? Bruises ? Filthy ?

most recent update I could find shows the mother was eventually charged with neglect in addition to her boyfriend and his charges.

He was to go to trial in Jauary but I can find no further updates.
