West Lafayette police and fire were dispatched at 9:03 p.m. Wednesday to 134 Pierce Street at Campus Edge Apartments where they found two individuals unresponsive.

A bystander tried lifesaving measures, but both victims were pronounced dead at the scene.

"Preliminary information appears to indicate that the subjects died after a fall from the Campus Edge apartment building," the West Lafayette Police Department said in a statement.

The circumstances of the incident remain under investigation, but police said it "does appear to be an isolated incident and there is no apparent danger to the public."

This is a new building.

Twin sisters, Rayna and Tanya Roy, 25 years old. Parents were in town visiting from New York to help the women move back home. Ruled a suicide.

“Investigators have no information that neighbors heard arguments, and no one was seen coming or going from the apartment before the women fell, West Lafayette police Lt. Jon Eager said.

The girls' parents were in town visiting from New York state, and showed up at the apartment after the women fell and were greeted by police officers, Eager said.”

“West Lafayette Police Department Lt. Jon Eager said the girls' parents were visiting from New York State and were anticipating helping the twins move back.”

Bolding by me:

“The girls arrived at their apartment about 8:34 p.m. Wednesday, West Lafayette police Lt. Jon Eager said, explaining he reviewed surveillance video of the girls arriving home. No one came or went from the apartment until West Lafayette police officers arrived at the apartment. No arguments or fights were heard, either, he said.

About 20 minutes after arriving at their apartment, a passerby called 911 to report the women's bodies in the alley, according to Eager's review of the surveillance video and West Lafayette police documents.

The women's parents convinced the women to move back home with them to New York state, Eager said, and they arrived at their daughter's apartment complex and waited for them. When their daughters didn't meet their parents, the women's mother went to the seventh-floor apartment, where police officers denied her permission to enter the apartment, Eager said.”

Wonder if this was folie a deux or if the sisters had real reservations about returning tolive with their parents. Tragic, in either case.

"The women's parents were in West Lafayette, and the plan was to move them back to the family's home in New York state, Eager said, noting that both the parents and the daughters agreed on the idea.

The women did not leave any note, unless it is locked on their phones, which are waiting for a forensic review, Eager said.
No one received a distressing text from the women, he added.

The sisters Facetimed their brother the day before the suicides, which was notable since they hadn't spoken in a while.

On Oct. 11, the twins' parents took their daughters to Golden Corral in Lafayette for dinner.

After dinner, the parents dropped their daughters off at the apartment complex so they could pack a few things.

Meanwhile, the parents briefly visited a relative who is a Purdue University student.

The parents then parked outside of the apartment complex waiting on their daughters to come to the car.

When ambulances and police began to arrive on scene, the women's mother went to the seventh-floor apartment, where officers denied her access to the apartment."

RIP to sisters :(

If our two daughter were moving out of their apartment, we wouldn't just wait in the parking lot for them. We'd go up and help them carry out their things. However, there may be details to this account that we are missing.

In any case, it seems clear that the daughters didn't see going to live with their parents as an option they could live with.

May they rest in peace. May the family find comfort.

Unfortunately, more information may not come out because their deaths were ruled suicides. I hope they’re at peace now, and I hope their family and friends can heal too.

As someone who has planned my own suicide before (all good now!), with the limited information we know, it does seem like they were planning this at least a little bit. The girls calling their brother after not speaking to him in a while points to that, IMO. Even if the conversation wasn’t concerning and the twins were acting normal, to the twins, it was a way of saying goodbye. It does confuse me a bit that they chose to jump while their parents were there (what if the parents had come back before the girls had a chance to jump?) but maybe they did that so that their parents wouldn’t have to travel back from New York again? I know to the suicidal mind, usually you want to limit burden as much as possible.

I’m wondering how hard the parents were pushing for a move back home to New York and why. It seems like at least Tanya (who was enrolled at Purdue and graduated in 2020) had likely been in West Lafayette since around 2016. I wonder if one or both of them had begun displaying mental health issues and that’s why the parents wanted them back home? Ugh, this is just so sad. Again, rest in peace Tanya and Rayna. I hope you’re both at peace now.

I wonder if there were cultural factors involved, that they may have been duty-bound to move back home based on family and cultural dynamics. One possibility is that there were other relatives living at home, namely grandparents, and that both were facing the prospect of eldercare for an indefinite number of years rather than carrying on with their own lives.

The sisters were adults - 25 year - old.
Can parents force an adult person to pack and move?

Why not to change a city, find a job and become independent?
Live one's own life?
Away from (toxic?) family?

Terrible, terrible case.

Sisters from Sydney come to mind :(

Independence is pricey in today’s world.

Many of today’s 25yr olds rely on parents for some degree of financial support. Think about how health insurance now covers dependents up to age 26, for example. A totally independent 25yr old is - for better or worse - relatively uncommon these days, especially for those with student loans.

Changing a city, finding a job - those both tend to require significant up-front cash. First & last month’s rent plus a security deposit, for starters.

I see.
Well, I live far away from the USA (in Europe), so I don't really know reality there.

Many mid-twenty year-olds usually live and work far from family homes in my country.
But then, while studying and working they are medically insured.
Every student/worker is.
And State Universities are free, so young people are not crushed by loans.
They usually start by renting a room or a cheap flat.
Not to mention starting their own families at this age.
