V.G. Siddhartha is chairman and managing director of the Bangalore-based company behind India’s biggest coffee chain, Café Coffee Day, which has more than 1,700 outlets compared with the 150 stores Starbucks has in India.

Indian police believe Siddhartha left the southern Indian city of Bangalore on Monday and traveled by car to Mangalore about 220 miles away,

He was last seen Monday evening on a bridge in the city of Mangalore.

“He left his driver and vehicle near a bridge, and hasn’t been seen since then."

The company wouldn’t comment on the disappearance or local-media allegations that Mr. Siddhartha had addressed a suicide note to the board of directors and employees. Investigating authorities don’t have any suicide note but were searching the river, as tracker dogs had lost Mr. Siddhartha’s scent in the middle of the bridge.

‘Fought for a long time, but today I gave up': V G Siddhartha's last letter to Cafe Coffee Day family

In the letter, which reads almost like a parting statement, Siddhartha mentions about his financial troubles and writes: "I am very very sorry to let down all the people who had put their trust in me. I have failed as an entrepreneur. I fought for a long time, but today I gave up as I could not take any more pressure from one of the private equity partners forcing me to buy back shares, a transaction I had completed six months ago by borrowing a large sum of money from a friend. Tremendous pressure from other lenders led to me succumbing to the situation."

Cafe Coffee Day was considered a huge success story in last 20 yrs. But suddenly, its owner and founder Sidharth is saying today that he failed as entrepreneur. He is missing.

What failed him eventually?

Economic policy?Market forces?or Consumer behaviour?

Or recession has arrived?

The letter purportedly written by Shri VG Siddhartha which is circulating is dated July 27th.

I received a call from him on the 28th asking if we could meet up.

It’s unbelievable that a courageous man like him would resort to this.

However, I find this utterly fishy and urge that a thorough Investigation be conducted into this matter.

Shri Siddhartha and his family were closely known to me for decades now.

Shocked by VG Siddhartha’s sudden disappearance. Hope he is safe & found soon.

Siddharth is an exceptional entrepreneur who introduced millions of Indians to coffee.

His is the ugliest example of how agency persecution is wrecking India’s growth story

DK Shivakumar, Congress on VG Siddhartha, founder-owner of Cafe Coffee Day going missing in Mangaluru: This incident is hard to believe, I've asked for an investigation. He is an asset to the country, we don't know if he is missing or someone has taken him away.
