eeuuww! I thought I had read somewhere that maggots, very sterile ones, were use sometimes to help with infectons. Something about returning to old way medicine techniqes. Maybe it was leeches or something.

No you remember right. Maggots feed on decaying flesh and can clean an infected wound cleaner than a surgeon. Evidently this wound was more than the maggots could handle.
