..Are you hoping they do the same for RC? The LE did RC a favor and didn't push the stat rape charge on him. So maybe he will be lucky again....AND he has two or three attorneys ready to fire on DCF and Family Courts if they decide to challenge him, right?
What do you know about LE and any potential statutory rape charge? This is a major topic of discussion on this board, and I'm not sure I understand why. Have there been public statements from LE about this? If so, I would like to see them.
We don't know at what point a district attorney might have considered Misty to be an emancipated minor. Certainly, she was at the point that she and Ron got married. But Misty had been out of school for a long time. If she ever had the benefit of "parenting," it probably stopped long ago. LE in the area would have to be very familiar with the Croslins. The sexual behavior of a female from that clan was probably not high on their radar. What shocks middle-class people in nice neighborhoods is just everyday life in other places, as anyone who has ever lived or worked in public housing projects or other high-crime/low-income areas can tell you. And clearly, no one in the Croslin family was interested in pressing charges against Ron--he was supporting Misty. She had a place to live, food to eat, clothes to wear.
I know it upsets many posters here that Misty, at 17, was having sex with someone 7-8 years her senior; laws intended to protect children from sexual exploitation have put 16 and 17-year olds in the same category as much younger kids and made sexual activity, even with boyfriends a year or so older, a criminal activity. It bothers me far more that she was not educated, that she was homeless as a child, that she was sexually assaulted as a child (and thus schooled to use sexuality to get security). The people responsible for protecting Misty from exploitation, her parents, have wounded her far more than anything Ron has ever done to her. For all the speculation that Ron's motives were to cover up whatever happened to Haleigh, looked at another way, Ron's decision to marry Misty moved her out of the "live-in girlfriend" category into the "wife" category. Even today, in a time when living together and having children out of wedlock an ordinary thing for both the middle class and the rich, it means something when two people (even immature and impulsive people) decided to marry. Even if it is misguided, even if it doesn't work out. It may never have occurred to Ron that Misty was a "child" and he was technically committing a crime in having her as a girlfriend until he became aware of all the reaction to their relationship when it went from a private situation to a national story. So I don't think LE cut Ron a "break."
Ron, like anyone else, is entitled to have an attorney if DCF and Family Court investigates him or takes him to court. And it is not against the law to own a gun or to make impassioned statements about someone who might know what has happened to your missing child. I get it that people don't like Ron Cummings or how he has lived his life. But he has the same rights as everyone else. I don't see that Ron is "lucky" in any way. If he is, as I believe, not involved in Haleigh's disappearance, he is coping with grief for a daughter who is missing and probably dead. His life is the fodder for cable TV and internet gossip. It is beginning to look like he may never find out what happened to his little girl. And if he is responsible for her disappearance, then clearly his sex life is the least of his bad deeds.
