That defies, then, the theory that John was "out of his mind" with grief and confusion over the events of that morning. In order to be a detective, John had to be able to put his emotions in a mental compartment and ignore them while considering complex intellectual ideas such as what the optimal entrance would be for an intruder who did not resort to a simple ground-level door- or window-smashing. If you believe that John was able of compartmentalizing his emotions enough to perform intellectual detective work, then it is not a great leap of faith to say that he was able to compartmentalize his emotions enough to construct a cover-up of the murder of his daughter to protect either himself or someone he knew.
You cannot have it both ways. John cannot be out of control of his emotions on December 26th, and in control of them.
