GUILTY Ireland - Anastasia Kriegel, 14, Found deceased, Lucan, Co Dublin, 14 May 2018 *minors arrested*

Bit more from the pathologist, but some of it is getting quite graphic.

She said in court today that the deceased had extensive bruising on her face, with irregular splits in her scalp. There were fractures to her skull and to the cartilage in her neck. Ana also suffered fractures to her eye sockets, the court heard.

Ana suffered four lacerations to the back of her head, the court also heard. Three of the lacerations were on the right side of her head – the other to the left.

There were multiple lacerations to her face and neck. There was also an 11.5cm laceration down the left-hand side of Ana’s face, the court heard.

Professor Cassidy said Ana suffered bruising to her hands and arms – injuries she said were consistent with defensive injuries.

Ana also suffered haemorrhaging to the lining inside her eyelids. Professor Cassidy explained to the jury that these injuries are commonly seen in someone who is suffering from a lack of oxygen. She said one indication of these types of injury is mechanical asphyxia or “compression of neck such as strangulation”.

Professor Cassidy described how she also found evidence of bruising at the mons pubis – the area of fat around the pubic bone.

She also found evidence which showed fresh bleeding to areas of the vagina. In her conclusions she determined that the cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head or compression to the neck.

Professor Cassidy said there was evidence to suggest there was an attempt to penetrate Ana’s vagina. She found no foreign material inside the deceased. Professor Cassidy said that Ana may have been unconscious or otherwise restrained when the alleged attempted penetration occurred, the court heard.

In cross-examination, Professor Cassidy agreed with defence counsel Patrick Gageby that injuries caused to Ana’s vagina could also have been caused by consensual sexual contact.

Conclusions

In her conclusions to the jury, Professor Cassidy said there was evidence that Ana had been violently assaulted and she suffered “extensive injuries” to her head and neck. There was also evidence, she said, that there was an attempt to penetrate her vagina.

The court heard that there were no drink or drugs in Ana’s body at the time of her death and Professor Cassidy described her as being a “very healthy” person.

She said Ana suffered four separate impacts to her head. Professor Cassidy said this could have been caused by a “fairly heavy object with small striking surfaces”.

She said there were two main areas of impact to each side of the teenager’s face. She said these strikes had the potential to render Ana unconscious.

Professor Cassidy told the jury there were “definite signs” of asphyxia. She added that such injuries could have caused Ana to lose consciousness. The teenager also lost a lot of blood in the incident, the court heard.

Omg that poor child :(

I wonder what the arguments were that the accused were not in court for Professor Cassidy's evidence. The extent of the injuries was horrific but surely that is not something that should preclude them sitting in.
Thank you for the updates.

The [guidance] counselor said she knew Boy B was one of the last people to see Ana so she had arranged to speak to him on May 16.

Boy B told her he was "stressed" and "feeling the pressure" of being interviewed by gardai. She said he called it an "interrogation".

During their conversation, she said he mentioned "around 10 times" that he was not the last person to see Ana.

He told her he'd walked with Ana to the park, but he had then left.

Boy B also offered a theory what had happened to Ana, saying that perhaps the men who attacked Boy A had got, kidnapped or taken Ana.

The counsellor said she was "impressed" by Boy B, who seemed a "very bright boy". She said his speech flowed, he looked her straight in the eye and he seemed very calm.

Earlier this afternoon, the court heard from fingerprint expert Detective Garda Melissa Lyons who took a number of items which were checked for potential evidence.

Detective Garda Seamus O’Donnell, a ballistics expert from the Garda Technical Bureau, also attended the alleged murder scene at Glenwood House over the course of a number of days, the court heard.

He said that it was his opinion that, from the evidence, Ana had died as a result of a violent assault.

He also said it was his opinion that the most of the assault took place at the entrance to the room as there was blood evidence and a blood-covered concrete block nearby.

Detective Garda O’Donnell added that he believed Ana either moved or her body was dragged to the back of the room where it was later discovered.

Any body know how long the assault must have taken place-even a time when the boys returned home? just seems like this much brutality would take quite some time.
it seems like she was lured there and the second boy was waiting and as soon as she entered the room he attacked her with the plank and brick. such level of violence for people who barely knew each other? anybody know if they were even in the same class in school?

Ana was last seen at 5.14 on CCTV. Boy A seen walking away at 6.03. Not sure of the distances involved.

The boy's school can't be named in case it identifies them.

Garda Diarmuid Lawlor is next to give evidence.

He was present with detective garda O'Keeffe when Boy A's witness statement was being taken.

Garda Seamus Timmons is the next witness.

Garda Timmons is a trained CCTV examiner. The court has heard that between 600-700 hours of CCTV was viewed by gardai during the investigation

The court is now being shown CCTV evidence.

CCTV evidence shows Boy A and Boy B walking together through an estate at 4.11pm on the day of disappearance.

At 4.51pm - Boy B seen walking in direction of where Ana lived.

At 4.57pm - person seen carrying a backpack - walking.

At 5.01pm: we see Boy B and Ana walking.

At 5.05pm: Boy A seen wearing gloves and carrying a backpack.

At 5.14pm: two figures seen walking. Garda Timmons says he believes these two to be Boy B and Ana

At 5.32pm: Mobile phone belonging to Ana was 'pinged'

At 5.49: Boy B allegedly seen walking back across a park.

At 17.56pm: Person walking through the park - believed to be Boy B.

At 17.57pm: Person seen holding a bag in their left hand similar to one carried by Boy A, Garda Timmons says.

At 6.03pm: Person seen - believed to be Boy A walking away.

That's all for today. More CCTV evidence tomorrow morning.

Hmmmm. I recall Ted Bundy was of similar impressions.

And I hope they have evidence of anyone that was involved in this young girl's murder, whether anything supposedly 'consensual', ever even took place. I know, defense lawyer doing his thing. Ugh.

Detective Garda Gabriel Newton called with a colleague to the home of the second accused boy in this case on the evening of 17 May, 2018.

At that stage, the body of Ana Kriégel had been found and a murder investigation had begun. She told the court Boy B expressed unhappiness that he was being involved in the incident.

She said Boy B told them that the other accused boy wanted to tell Ana that he was not interested in her in the park on 14 May, because he didn't want to be seen with her.

Asked what Ana had been wearing, Garda Newton said Boy B told them she had been wearing what he described as "a slutty top" as well as a black hoodie, bottoms and high shoes. He said Ana had shown him a picture of her tied up with tape in a friend's house.

Boy B said he had left Ana with Boy A as he felt they needed privacy and went to get a drink of water at the ranger's station. He saw Ana coming back - he said she looked sad and didn't answer him.

He said he didn't know Boy A had been attacked until the following day, when Boy A and his mother called to his house. Boy B told the gardaí he thought maybe Ana had beaten up Boy A.

He said the weather was not very nice on the day he had been in the park with Ana. He said it was cold, Mr Whippy was not in the playground and there were not many people around.

The court heard Boy B also told gardaí that two girls had come to him the previous week to tell him that Ana had a crush on Boy A and he was to tell Boy A that.

Interesting what is emerging about Boy B. Instead of being shocked or wanting to help upon hearing of the death of his class mate, he is "unhappy" at being involved in the "incident", a sentiment he echoes to the Guidance Counselor where he refers to being "dragged into this mess". A "killer" loose in the area where they live would be unimaginable and, given his proximity to the event, you might expect some fear. After all, it could have been him but for happenstance.
He still appears to be shielding Boy A despite a witness stating that Boy B didn't trust Boy A owing to some previous incident.
His comment about her top triggers so many alarm bells. He does appear very put upon for the personal intrusion more than anything else.

Ana Kriégel hit several times with weapon as she lay on floor, trial told

Ana Kriégel was struck several times with a weapon as she lay on the floor of the derelict house where she died, the trial of two 14-year-old’s accused of her murder heard on Tuesday.

The 14-year-old girl’s body was found in a front room of the farmhouse in Lucan, Co Dublin on May 17th, 2018.

John Hoade, a blood pattern and DNA specialist from Forensic Science Ireland told prosecuting counsel Brendan Grehan SC three types of blood patterns were found in the room.

Impact patterns were found on the walls. The witness said these patterns can result from an object or weapon striking liquid blood, causing it to fly through the air. It can occur when an assault causes bleeding or a strike impacts an area which was already bleeding.

Cast-off patterns were also found on the wall. These are caused when blood is released from an object during its motion. It often occurs during an assault with a weapon when blood flies off the weapon as it travels through the air.

A saturation blood stain was found on the carpet to the left of the door to the room. These occur where liquid blood accumulates on an absorbent surface.

Mr Hoade said the patterns indicate Ana was struck several times while lying to the left of the entrance to the room. She lay here for a period of time before being moved further into the room where she was eventually found.

“Her body had been moved from the area where she bled out to where her body was discovered,” the witness said as he went through photographs from the scene.

It is the prosecution case that Boy B lured Ana from her home at 5pm on May 14th, 2018 on the pretence of meeting Boy A, who Ana was “interested” in.

An expert in DNA and blood spatter analysis examined the black boots worn by the first accused boy, on 14 May 2018 - the day Ana went missing.

The court has heard Boy A told gardaí she stormed off after he told her he was not interested in her in St Catherine's park in Lucan, and that he was later attacked by two men.

John Hoade said he examined the boy's boots for blood staining. He said the soles and upper areas of both boots were blood stained. He sampled nine separate areas on both boots and the DNA profile in all areas matched that of Ana.

Mr Hoade told the court the blood staining was not immediately obvious and he used a microscope to magnify the areas.

Some of the blood could be identified as blood spatter - particularly on an area of the right boot. He explained that this kind of pattern comes from blood flying though the air after an external force has been applied to it.

Evidence of blood spatter on boot in Ana Kriégel case

He told the court the pattern indicated Boy A either assaulted Ana or was in very close proximity to her when she was assaulted.

Mr Hoade also examined a piece of wood found in the room where her body was found. The stick was shown to the jurors who were told it measured 92cm in length and 4x3 cm in width.

It was charred at one end and a nail or staple protruded from each end.

Mr Hoade said he noted that the stick was blood stained throughout and the DNA profile from samples taken of the blood, matched that of Ana.

He said the blood patterns on the stick were those he would have expected to observe if the piece of wood had been swung through the air and used as a weapon in the assault of the schoolgirl.

He also examined a concrete block which had blood on all six surfaces.

The block was found in the same room in the corner where Mr Hoade had noted heavy blood staining.

He told the court it was around half of a nine-inch concrete block, which was quite heavy and awkward to manipulate. He said there was also hair attached to the block.

He said he did not sample the blood from the block as it was his understanding there was no suggestion it was used as a weapon in the assault.

I am assuming he also did not sample the hair 'attached to the block'? Huh?!

Confusing indeed. Why would Hoade conduct his examination on the “understanding “ that a blood-covered concrete block was not the murder weapon and didn’t merit collection and sampling as evidence of a crime?

Wouldn’t it be better to collect and sample it in order to include or exclude it as said weapon?
