Ireland Ireland - Annie McCarrick, 26, US citizen, Dublin, 23 March 1993

From Tootsie's article:

'However, Missing Persons Helpline Ireland said in their post that it has ‘now emerged that investigators believe Annie was not in Johnny Foxes Pub in the village of Glencullen the night of her disappearance and they feel it was a case of mistaken identity.’

So, that would change everything, imo.

From the article Tootsie posted (thx Tootsie)....for convenience, again the link New witness comes forward in 28-year-old cold case of missing Annie McCarrick

According to reports in The Independent, a witness has come forward in the last 18 months and has shared information on what they believe to be Annie McCarrick’s whereabouts before her disappearance in March 1993.

The American woman was last seen on Friday, March 26 that year, taking a bus to Enniskerry, however, a new witness claims to have another sighting of Annie.

It’s said the witness believes they <they??> saw the 26-year-old woman walking the R752 road to Rathnew in Wicklow.

Very interesting development...Is 'Poppies', a small coffee shop mentioned up thread, anywhere near there?

ETA Poppies is in Enniskerry....Google Maps

New Witness Comes Forward In Cold Case Of Missing Annie McCarrick
''Speaking of Annie’s disappearance in 2016, her mother Nancy described it as a ‘terrible loss’ and said she now just wants to get her daughter’s body back.

‘It’s been a long time, such a very long time. I’m pretty sure, you know, that I’ll never see her again. But I guess my greatest wish would be to be able to take her home and have a grave that I could go to.

‘So, to find out what happened to her really would be a great gift at this point. It really would,’ she said.''

Interesting to read that a witness potentially puts Annie McCarrick on near Rathnew. That is quite a distance from Enniskerry area.

What are people's thoughts on this new witness potentially putting Annie McCarrick on the road on or near Rathnew ?

JMO, but I don't think it was her. It is too far away from the Glencullen/Enniskerry away, where the last probable sighting of her was.

My gut feeling is that sadly she was abducted off the road somewhere outside of Enniskerry. Some of the small roads there can get 'quiet' very quickly, when you leave the village. If this was the case, whoever was responsible would have to had some local knowledge of the area.

Here is some visual. It looks to be far apart. I don't believe she was at the Johnny Fox, but she might have been seen in "Poppies" in Enniskerry. Still a long time from there, 51 minutes by car, let alone by foot. Google Maps Somehow also this sighting doesn't seem credible. BUT you never know.

. I don't believe she was at the Johnny Fox

Yes, I tend to agree. I don't think she made it as far as Johnny Fox's pub that evening. I think she may have been abducted before then. I could picture someone stopping to offer her a lift on one of the many small roads in the area (the weather was not good at the time) and the situation escalating from there.

As for the road to Rathnew, that is too far away from Enniskerry/Glencullen, with no direct public transport link.

Circumstances of Disappearance
Annie McCarrick has been missing from her home at Sandymount in Dublin since Friday, March 26, 1993. On that date, just days before her mother was due to arrive, Annie didn't show up as expected to pick up her paycheck at work. Annie travelled to Ireland to study and was living in an apartment at St. Catherine’s Court, Sandymount with two other friends, worked at a restaurant in Donnybrook, and was planning to become a teacher. On that Friday morning she was at home knitting and told her friends she may go for a walk in the Wicklow or Glencullen area. At approximately 11am Annie purchased groceries from supermarket Quinnsworth on the Sandymount Road. She returned home to St. Catherine’s Court with the groceries and they were left on the kitchen table. Later that day at 3.15pm Annie took a bus from Sandymount to Ranelagh. Annie took the number 44 bus from Ranelagh to Enniskerry. There was no bus from Enniskerry to Glencullen, Annie would have had to walk the 6km’s to where she was next seen at Johnnie Fox’s public house, Glencullen. Witnesses say Annie, who had no apparent boyfriend at the time, was seen with an unidentified man. On Saturday, when her friends arrived at her apartment for a previously arranged dinner party, there was no sign of Annie.

A private investigator hired by McCarrick's father, however, believes she was never at Johnnie Fox's Pub on the night of her disappearance, because he doesn't think she wouldn't have walked that far in the rain to get there. The evening was cold and wet, and McCarrick would have had to walk six kilometers, or 3.73 miles, from the bus stop to the pub.

The investigator puts credence in another sighting of McCarrick, by an employee of a small coffee shop called Poppies. The witness, who worked at Poppies at the time and is now deceased, believed she saw McCarrick with a man on the afternoon of her disappearance. The man paid for McCarrick to purchase a snack, and the two of them left. The private investigator believes this man, whom he thinks he has identified, may have killed McCarrick.

Two suspects in her presumed death were identified in 2008. Neither of them have been publicly named, but both of them lived in the Wicklow area in 1993 and neither of them have criminal records.

A former member of the Irish Republican Army (IRA), a now-defunct Irish nationalist terrorist organization, is also a suspect in McCarrick's disappearance. The man allegedly raped the twelve-year-old daughter of another IRA member and possibly other girls, and investigators believe the IRA sent him to the United States so he could escape prosecution. Authorities stated they believe McCarrick met the IRA member at Johnnie Fox's Pub on the night of her disappearance and he murdered her. He has not been publicly identified.

Annie was formally reported missing by her mother Nancy, who travelled to Ireland on 30th March 1993. Police theorize her disappearance may be the work of a serial killer.

In 2020, the investigation is still ongoing. FBI is now involved.

In 2021, there is circumstantial evidence linking Larry Murphy to her disappearance and Jo Jo Dullard's. He remains a suspect, sources confirm.''

The disappearance of American Annie Bridget McCarrick in Ireland Documentary - YouTube

Larry Murphy (criminal) - Wikipedia
''Although only convicted of this crime, Murphy is regarded as being the prime suspect in the disappearance of a number of young women in the mid to late 1990s in the Leinster area, when he was known to be living in the region. These women have become known in popular parlance having disappeared within "Ireland's Vanishing Triangle". The list of vanished women include:
  1. Annie McCarrick, 26 (1993)
  2. Eva Brennan, 39 (1993)
  3. Imelda Keenan, 22 (1994)
  4. Jo-Jo Dullard, 21 (1995)
  5. Fiona Pender, 25 (1996)
  6. Ciara Breen, 17 (1997)
  7. Fiona Sinnott, 19 (1998)
  8. Deirdre Jacob, 18 (1998)
No other such disappearances occurred while Murphy was in prison.''

In particular Murphy has been suspected of being responsible for the disappearances of Annie McCarrick, Jo-Jo Dullard and Deirdre Jacob, all of whom vanished close to the area where Murphy lived at the time. The bodies of these individuals have never been found despite massive searches and investigations for over 10 years. Despite intensive questioning by Gardaí (Irish police), Murphy denies any knowledge or involvement in the disappearance of these women. Murphy has been ruled out of as a suspect in the Dullard and Fiona Sinnott investigations.[10]

I didn't realise LM had been ruled out as a suspect in the Jo Jo Dullard case. Did new evidence come to light to clear him ?

While I can’t see him as a viable suspect for the Fiona Sinnott disappearance, he would be my number one suspect for Jo Jo Dullard.

I always thought the sighting in Poppies was legit and that Annie got as far as Enniskerry. I never realised that Annie may have been in the company of a man at the time, though.

If true, surely this guy must be the main suspect. My gut feeling is that this person is not LM. I can't see that creep exposing himself to too many potential witnesses, in a public place like a coffee shop.

Every time novelist Marisa Mackle goes for a walk in the Dublin Mountains, she finds herself asking: “Annie, where are you?”

It’s nearly 30 years since her friend, Annie McCarrick, disappeared without a trace on a day trip to Enniskerry in March 1993, a few years after the American arrived in Ireland to study.

Haunting footage of a carefree Annie delightedly thanking her Nana “so much for the money” that she had sent to her in Dublin forms the opening frames in a new documentary on the enduring mystery.

I find it really hard to get past the perishable groceries left out on the table. And also that at 3pm in March you would decide to catch a bus to a destination an hour away for a walk. I almost feel like something happened to her when she returned home from the market and the eyewitness sighting of her on the bus was incorrect/from another day.

I don't really think too much about the perishable groceries. The temperature would still be cold in March. Do we know what the groceries were ? Other than frozen food or milk, there would be no real urgency to put anything else into the fridge/freezer. Now if there was a lot of frozen food etc. left out on the counter then that could point to an abduction from her home, but that would be extremely difficult if she did not go willingly.

JMO, but I think the sighting in Poppies Coffee Shop is legitimate. I can't see a local coffee shop like that being too busy in March and an American woman visiting it would be remembered. She was seen in the company of a man. This person has to be the number one POI. I think we can assume that he was not local. Enniskerry is a small village. I would love to know how they parted company. Did he drive off and leave her in Enniskerry ? Did he offer her a lift ? Did he pretend to drive off and then circle back ?

A New York-based lawyer says he has received a 'very promising lead' in the search for missing woman Annie McCarrick. It follows an article in the Irish Independent by Catherine Fegan, which suggests there is 'one last roll of the dice. Michael Griffith is from the same area as Ms McCarrick's family, and came over to Ireland following her disappearance in 1993. He told The Pat Kenny Show they are now checking a this new lead. "We had TV exposure, radio exposure and unfortunately there were no good leads". "But I am pleased to announce within the last 15 minutes, thanks to Catherine Fegan's article, I received an e-mail from an Irish citizen with a very, very promising lead.''

Rbbm. Check out ETA link below this one.
Very sad that her dad passed away before learning what happened to his beloved daughter, imo.

"We were able to send some agents from the Behaviour Analysis Unit - BAU - that's kind of the 'Silence of the Lambs' people - over to the UK to look further into the matter.
"So since then, I've taken a very active interest and I've been in touch with the Gardaí and with journalists like yourselves and been very active".
"I think what we can bring to the table is a fresh set of eyes on a case that has grown stale.
"I believe that this is the work of a serial killer, the geography suggests that.
"I've heard some other theories - possible involvement by maybe someone from the IRA - but things like that, having worked in the government, and you know as well as I do trying to keep a secret is a very difficult thing to do.
"I think if there was a conspiracy afoot, that information would have gotten out by now.
"So I think it's closely-guarded by possibly a lone serial killer".

''There was no bus from Enniskerry to Glencullen - so she would have had to walk the 6kms to where she was next seen at Johnnie Fox’s Pub at Glencullen.

Annie was formally reported missing by her mother Nancy, who travelled to Ireland on March 30th that year.
Nancy travelled to Ireland again to re-visit the places Annie went to on that Friday afternoon and evening.
Annie’s father John has since passed away.

Gardaí have made a number of appeals for witnesses to come forward - recalling that Friday March 26th 1993 was a cold, wet and windy day.
Did anyone see or speak to Annie in Johnnie Fox’s Pub that evening?

A prime suspect in the disappearance of Annie McCarrick is on the run in America, the Irish Sunday Mirror has learned.

According to former Garda detective Alan Bailey, who was centrally involved in the investigation of the missing tourist in Ireland, the man believed to be behind her suspected murder was a member of the Provisional IRA from the North.
Mr Bailey said the man is believed to have killed the 27-year-old after divulging too much about the terrorist group’s operations during a drunken conversation.

April 2022
''Kenneth Strange, a former FBI agent and McCarrick family friend, helped and advised them, and took an active interest in the case on the 10th anniversary.

“My gut tells me that she made her way to Enniskerry and she met someone there, or was approached by someone there who maybe asked her for directions — and then, by that time, it’s over,” he says.

“I would call that person a psychopath. These are people who act alone — they have a place where they know they are going to dispose of the body.”

JMO, but I always thought the IRA member killing Annie a bit unlikely. I don't believe she got as far as Johnny Fox's pub.

I think she either willingly took a lift off the man she was with in Poppies Coffee Shop, or else she declined the lift, the guy drove off but came back shortly after and got her into his car in as she was walking along one of the small roads outside Enniskerry. I am convinced this person is the perp. I think it is too much of a stretch to think that she could have been killed later that evening by an IRA man, when we have this unknown person still in the picture.

I am unsure if this unknown perp. was LM. Enniskerry is a bit of a distance from Baltinglass, but until any further evidence comes to light, I don't think he can be ruled out.

Does anyone else have any other theories or opinions on this disappearance (in case i am on completely the wrong track) ??
