Devastated wife of missing farmer Michael Gaine sells his sheep as locals speak of baffling case

"It is understood Gardaí recovered a bow and arrows in a cave during a search, but sources have urged caution and say they are not immediately linking the find with Michael Gaine's disappearance"
Its very interesting in the quoted page, that Mike has a history of disappearing and its possible his tenant was the last one to see him.

I also think its "weird" that wife is selling his animals, unless it was already set up before.
Just strange case

Since I know, MG "got lost"/was missing every now and then, I think, it's an exciting story. His tenant is also rather suspect to me; is he missing in his homeland USA? I would like to know ....

-.-.-
"However, Gardaí continue to want to speak to any person who travelled on the N71 on Thursday 20th March and/ or any person who may have any camera footage, including dash-cam or CCTV, or any other images (video or still) from Thursday 20th March and Friday 21st March in the Kenmare town / Moll's Gap (N71/ R568) area to provide that imagery to the Garda investigation team.

"Anyone with information on Michael's whereabouts is asked to contact Killarney Garda Station on 064 667 1160, the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.

"It's kind of scary, really, that somebody has just vanished. He is a lovely guy and really hard-working. He was into his rallying, very polite and just a normal guy. He was very well travelled like he was literally all over the world," he said.

bbm

How is a farmer/shepherd able to travel so much? That doesn't fit with my imagination of a cattle farmer, unless perhaps 2 weeks vacation pro year are meant, when speaking of "well travelled".

I can imagine a few reasons she might sell the sheep - if she couldn’t keep up with their care while gone, if she is having issues accessing funds for the property and animals that may have been in only his name, if the sheep were due for auction at this time and he’d signed a contract or she simply wanted to do what he was planning, to raise funds for search efforts etc. it’s very hard for me to know how to interpret her doing so without a lot more details.

As someone who lives rural and knows some agricultural workers, you really can't delay or wait when selling livestock, they depreciate in value if you don't sell at the correct time in the season. Not unusual to go ahead with the sale of some livestock that may have always been slated for sale.

Michael Gaine mainly kept sheep in the 1,000 acre farm. Sheep can be left to their own devices.

He did have a small number of cattle (30-40) that would need care. He bought in fodder for these.

His mother Sheila helped run the farm with him and would have looked the cattle when Michael and his wife travelled to Australia in 2000, etc. She passed away a few years ago.

As Nathan.Hogan outlined, you really can't delay or wait when selling livestock. They depreciate in value if you don't sell at the correct time in the season.

There is a market for lamb meat, particularly coming up to Easter. Younger lambs are preferred for a more tender meat.

There is very little demand for older lamb or sheep meat (mutton).

This is a good question imo

I’m curious about the tenant also

Is the Irish Examiner shady or legit? Lots of info here

“On the day before he vanished, he looked at two pairs of walking boots in a local shop, one for around €99 and the other for around €46.

In picking the cheaper ones, he was overheard saying he would go for the cheaper ones because “I don’t have far to go”, or words to that effect…… “He’d tear up to the gate in his quad bike. He was not a huge fan of walking anywhere. He had issues with his knees, and he had an issue with a hip too. The knees had been plaguing him in recent years.”“

Although an American he let live rent-free in a derelict property on his farm about six years ago still lives at the farm, it is not known how the man felt about the prospect of looking after the cattle.

Understood to be a former US marine who served in Afghanistan or Iraq, he had been living rough on land in and around Ladies View, not far from Kenmare and Killarney.”

Vanished without a trace: What happened to Kerry’s missing farmer Michael Gaine?

Said he had been living there 6 years.

There is nothing suspicious or unusual in the selling of livestock or sheep. Nor is there anything suspicious or unusual that he was well-travelled in the past.

This was a huge police (garda) operation, far more than any other missing person case. Michael Gaine was not a man who was willing or able to walk long distances. Family and neighbours have their suspicions based on where the RAV4 was found.

The police believe that there is a strong possibility that foul play was involved in the disappearance of Michael Gaine.

Dreadful to hear this. If they suspect foul play then the homeless person living on his land must be a prime suspect.

A U.S. citizen, reportedly a former Marine, is believed to have been staying in a shed on the farmyard. Locals say the individual had a falling out with Michael Gaine.

Residents familiar with the area noted that Michael Gaine’s car was not parked in its usual spot in the farmyard. Additionally, the handbrake was applied with unusual force—much tighter than Michael typically would have done. While this detail has not been officially confirmed by police, it has raised concerns among locals. Michael Gaine’s phone and wallet were also found inside the car, which those close to him say was highly uncharacteristic.

Michael Gaine and his wife resided in a home located several miles away from the farmhouse.

I hope they’ve examined that car forensically then.

Or maybe he gave someone a ride from the store that he knew, something happened and that person dropped his car off at his farm. Just adding other possiblities but I agree with looking deeper into the homeless guy

Why, oh why do I think of the missing pilot Bullinger, who murdered his wife, mistress and daughter of his mistress on an Idaho farm?
