Two held over NI death of alleged criminal

The second post on this page quotes an article from 2006 that seems to explain more into his involvement in crime and a suspect that is known but his name is not disclosed.

Another article mentioning his murder. Quoting since it's locked behind registration.
Deirdre Mulgrew - the lover of murdered crime boss Daron McReynolds - last night told of her terrifying doorstep encounter with indestructible gang boss Martin Foley and eight of his hoods. The former solicitor - who believes McReynolds was murdered by an Ulster-based pal of Foley's - spoke out after the crimelord was shot ten times last weekend. It is the fourth occasion the gangster has survived an attempt on his life.

Mum-of-five Deirdre told how Foley and eight henchmen called to her Cookstown home in 2006, warning her to keep quiet over McReynolds' disappearance.
The Co Tyrone woman said she "stood up" to Foley but was worried he would come back to attack her property.

She also claimed Foley later returned to her home to apologise for making the threats after he was involved in a row with McReynolds' killer. Sunday Life knows the identity of the alleged killer, but cannot publish his name for legal reasons.

Said Ms Mulgrew: "Everyone knows who Foley is so I couldn't believe it when he came to my door.

"He is a very scary man and I know what he is capable of.

"He warned me to keep quiet about the man who I believed had Daron murdered, but I didn't think he needed to tell me this with eight of his men standing behind him. I think the nerves just took over me and I told them where to go, but they could have just bundled me into a car and taken me away.

"I wasn't worried about myself but I was concerned about people close to me because we were dealing with very dangerous people here.

"I waited for a few weeks and nothing happened. Then I couldn't believe it when Foley came back to apologise because he knew he could not trust the criminal who sent him to my home in the first place.

"I'm not surprised he has survived all these murder attempts - he's not one of the most notorious criminals in Irish history for nothing."

Foley, who was a close pal of murdered Dublin godfather Martin 'The General' Cahill, has close links with Ulster.

He was kidnapped by the IRA in the 1980s but was subsequently rescued by the Garda.

He then survived a murder bid in 1996 after he told the IRA that crime boss John Gilligan's gang was selling heroin.

But he was targeted by the Provos again after it emerged he was working with notorious loyalist terrorists from mid-Ulster.

Foley is believed to have linked up with the UVF after he sold them stolen antique paintings, and he supplied drugs to a UDA killer known as the 'window cleaner'.

The body of smuggler McReynolds has never been found and Ms Mulgrew believes he was killed by a former friend.
