''What we know

  • At least 1,200 Israelis — including 189 soldiers — have been killed and more than 2,700 have been injured. In Gaza, at least 1,120 people have been killed and 5,300 have been injured, overwhelming hospitals and morgues. More than 260,000 people have been displaced in Gaza.
  • Israeli fighter jets have struck 450 targets in northern Gaza in 24 hours, leaving the streets unrecognizable in some places.
  • At least 22 Americans have been killed, and at least 17 are unaccounted-for. Canadian, French and Thai nationals are also among those confirmed killed or missing, along with nationals from several countries in Latin America.
  • From 100 to 150 people are estimated to have been taken hostage. Hamas has threatened to kill them if Israel hits Gaza civilians "without warning."
  • An Israel Defense Forces spokesman said that "fighting will intensify" and warned that scenes coming out of Gaza will be "difficult to understand and cope with."
  • Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the opposition formed an emergency government and war management cabinet.''
...............................................................................

''Biden said today that “there’s a lot we’re doing” to try to bring Americans held hostage by Hamas home, but he did not go into specifics.

“The press is going to shout to me, and many of you are: What are you doing to get these folks home? If I told you, I wouldn’t be able to get them home,” Biden told reporters at a roundtable with Jewish community leaders.

“Folks, there’s a lot we’re doing. A lot we’re doing. I have not given up hope on bringing these folks home,” Biden said.''

White House walks back Biden comments, as president goes off script

Joe Biden, like his predecessor, has a propensity to go off-script at times, with his staff scrambling to clarify or retract those remarks.

Mr Biden’s apparent aside during his short speech to Jewish leaders in Washington, expressing shock over photographs of Israeli children beheaded by Hamas attackers, is only the latest example.

The White House has since walked back Mr Biden’s statement, which had seemed to provide official US confirmation of particularly heinous brutality on the part of Hamas attackers. It thrust the president into the middle of the debate over the veracity of the claim and distracted somewhat from the focus of Mr Biden’s message – that he condemned the attack and stood fully in support of Israel.

Murdered children are a heartbreaking tragedy no matter how they were killed. But Mr Biden’s remarks complicate matters for the US as it seeks to aid and support Israel.

As the fog of war continues to swirl around this new conflict, any walking back or confusion risks aiding those who are trying to sow misinformation and cast doubt on events and atrocities that are verifiably true.

Israel Gaza live news: Push for lifesaving access to Gaza civilians as Israel cuts off power - BBC News

Gaza humanitarian situation gets desperate, Israel expected to start ground offensive

With Gaza now under a complete Israeli blockade and after five days of bombardment, the humanitarian situation is becoming increasingly desperate.

Mains electricity was cut off today after the territory’s only power station ran out of fuel. Hospitals, overwhelmed with thousands of casualties, say they are running out of medicines.

The United Nations says half a million Gazans have not had their food rations since Saturday.

The UN has called for a humanitarian corridor to be set up. An Egyptian official told the BBC that the government in Cairo was in discussions with all parties to try and allow aid into Gaza through Egypt even if only for a few hours.

Meanwhile, there is an increased expectation that Israel will soon step up its operation with a ground offensive.

An Israeli spokesperson said forces, including 300,000 reservists, were close to the border getting ready for their mission, to make sure that "at the end of this war Hamas no longer had any military capabilities".

With the number of people killed by Hamas at the weekend now known to be more than 1,200, that mission will have widespread Israeli public support.

Spitting arrests

Meanwhile, Israeli police on Wednesday arrested five people suspected of spitting towards Christians or churches in the Old City of Jerusalem and formed a special investigative team to deal with growing complaints of hostile gestures against Christians.

“Unfortunately, we witness the continued disgraceful acts of hatred towards Christians in the Old City of Jerusalem, primarily through spitting by extremists,” said Jerusalem District Commander Doron Turgeman on Wednesday.

No details were provided on the identities of the people arrested.
Members of the area’s small Christian community have said they have faced growing harassment and intimidation from Jewish ultranationalists,

Wednesday’s arrests came as the city prepared for its annual Jerusalem March, an event that usually draws huge crowds, including thousands of Christian pilgrims.

The spitting scene shows a group of foreign pilgrims beginning their procession through the limestone labyrinth of the Old City in occupied East Jerusalem, home to the holiest ground in Judaism, the third-holiest shrine in Islam and major Christian sites.

Raising a giant wooden cross, the men and women retraced the Old City route that they believe Jesus Christ took before his crucifixion. Along the way, ultra-Orthodox Jews in dark suits and broad-brimmed black hats squeezed past the pilgrims through narrow alleyways, their ritual palm fronds for the weeklong Jewish holiday of Sukkot in hand.

As they streamed by, at least seven ultra-Orthodox Jews spat on the ground beside the Christian tour group.

The incident, which the city’s minority Christian community lamented as the latest in an alarming surge of religiously motivated attacks, drew rare outrage from Netanyahu and other senior officials on Tuesday.

_______

Additionally, Christians are moving out due to Israeli harrassment.
The incident with the female recording was a group that goes around trying to convert Jews. This was more than a simple tour group. She was herself harassing people for her recordings.
I want to get the entire story straight on why ultra Orthodox men were angry at her.

EU tells Meta to crack down on Israel-Hamas disinfo

The EU has warned Mark Zuckerberg over the spread of "disinformation" on Meta's social media platforms after Hamas' attack on Israel.

It told Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, it "has 24 hours" to respond and comply with European law.

Social media firms have seen a surge in misinformation about the conflict, including doctored images and mislabelled videos.

On Tuesday the EU warned X, formerly known as Twitter, about such content.
The bloc's industry chief, Thierry Breton, told Meta it must prove it has taken "timely, diligent and objective action".

In a letter, he said the firm had 24 hours to tell him about the "proportionate and effective" measures it had taken to counter the spread of disinformation on its platforms.

A Meta spokesperson told the BBC: "After the terrorist attacks by Hamas on Israel on Saturday, we quickly established a special operations centre staffed with experts, including fluent Hebrew and Arabic speakers, to closely monitor and respond to this rapidly evolving situation."

"Our teams are working around the clock to keep our platforms safe, take action on content that violates our policies or local law, and coordinate with third-party fact checkers in the region to limit the spread of misinformation. We'll continue this work as this conflict unfolds."

The European Commission meanwhile reminded all social media companies that they are legally required to prevent the spread of harmful content related to Palestinian militant group Hamas, which is a proscribed terrorist group in the EU.

"Content circulating online that can be associated to Hamas qualifies as terrorist content, is illegal, and needs to be removed under both the Digital Services Act and Terrorist Content Online Regulation," a Commission spokesperson said.

Color me confused.
Yesterday, I watched a reporter choking back tears while describing the atrocities of infants who were beheaded. She was reporting live, on scene at the deadly attack on a small 'farming' community in Israel.

The report took off, like wild fire. Hideous and barbaric. News media, and social media both.

Suddenly, it was called back and questioned. ( By Hamas? Who ?

Early today, we get a sound bite/ transcript from Biden, who claims the very same. Babies were beheaded. And, he saw it.

White House press " calls back the claims of Biden....and claims he mis-spoke.

Tonight ( early am hours in Israel) the IDF dude says indeed, that babies were beheaded. On live recording.

Again, we now get more 'White House says"....nope..didn't happen.

Which is it? Anyone?

More than 338,000 people displaced in Gaza - UN

More than 338,000 people have been displaced in Gaza as Israel continues its aerial strikes on the area, the UN has said.

There have been mounting calls to allow for a safe passage into Gaza to provide much-needed aid and medicine. There have also been calls for a humanitarian corridor to let Palestinians leave the conflict zone, where many homes have been shelled and destroyed by the airstrikes.

The Rafah crossing, which is the main exit point from Gaza into Egypt has been closed since Tuesday after Israeli bombardments, according to Gaza officials.

Israeli troops are already gathered near the border of Gaza in preparation for a ground offensive.

I don’t know, but it certainly isn’t helping an already horrific situation. The so called “leaders” in Washington and one who is supposed to be long gone will just muddy the waters with this! How awful! IMO

Holy Land Christians say attacks rising in far-right Israel

JERUSALEM (AP) — The head of the Roman Catholic Church in the Holy Land has warned in an interview that the rise of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s far-right government has made life worse for Christians in the birthplace of Christianity.

The influential Vatican-appointed Latin Patriarch, Pierbattista Pizzaballa, told The Associated Press that the region’s 2,000-year-old Christian community has come under increasing attack, with the most right-wing government in Israel’s history emboldening extremists who have harassed clergy and vandalized religious property at a quickening pace.

The uptick in anti-Christian incidents comes as the Israeli settler movement, galvanized by its allies in government, appears to have seized the moment to expand its enterprise in the contested capital.

“The frequency of these attacks, the aggressions, has become something new,” Pizzaballa said during Easter week from his office, tucked in the limestone passageways of the Old City’s Christian Quarter. “These people feel they are protected … that the cultural and political atmosphere now can justify, or tolerate, actions against Christians.”

......

But now Netanyahu’s far-right government includes settler leaders in key roles — such as Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, who holds criminal convictions from 2007 for incitement of anti-Arab racism and support for a Jewish militant group.

Their influence has empowered Israeli settlers seeking to entrench Jewish control of the occupied West Bank and east Jerusalem, alarming church leaders who see such efforts — including government plans to create a national park on the Mount of Olives — as a threat to the Christian presence in the holy city. Palestinians claim east Jerusalem as the capital of their hoped-for state.

“The right-wing elements are out to Judaize the Old City and the other lands, and we feel nothing is holding them back now,” said Father Don Binder, a pastor at St. George’s Anglican Cathedral in Jerusalem. “Churches have been the major stumbling block.

.......

Physical assaults and harassment of clergy often go unreported, the center said. It has documented at least seven serious cases of vandalism of church properties from January to mid-March — a sharp increase from six anti-Christian cases recorded in all of 2022. Church leaders blame Israeli extremists for most of the incidents, and say they fear an even greater surge.

......
In March, a pair of Israelis burst into the basilica beside the Garden of Gethsemane, where the Virgin Mary is said to have been buried. They pounced on a priest with a metal rod before being arrested.

In February, a religious American Jew yanked a 10-foot rendering of Christ from its pedestal and smashed it onto the floor, striking its face with a hammer a dozen times at the Church of the Flagellation on the Via Dolorosa, along which it’s believed Jesus hauled his cross toward his crucifixion. “No idols in the holy city of Jerusalem!” he yelled.

Armenians found hateful graffiti on the walls of their convent. Priests of all denominations say they’ve been stalked, spat on and beaten during their walks to church. In January, religious Jews knocked over and vandalized 30 graves marked with stone crosses at a historic Christian cemetery in the city. Two teenagers were arrested and charged with causing damage and insulting religion.

But Christians allege that Israeli police haven’t taken most attacks seriously. In one case, 25-year-old George Kahkejian said he was the one beaten, arrested and detained for 17 hours after a mob of Jewish settlers scaled his Armenian Christian convent to tear down its flag earlier this year.
The police had no immediate comment.
“We see that most incidents in our quarter have gone unpunished,” complained Father Aghan Gogchian, chancellor of the Armenian Patriarchate. He expressed disappointment with how authorities frequently insist cases of desecration and harassment hinge not on religious hatred but on mental illness.

The Israeli police said they have “thoroughly investigated (incidents) regardless of background or religion” and made “speedy arrests.” The Jerusalem municipality is boosting security at upcoming Orthodox Easter processions and creating a new police department to handle religiously motivated threats, said Jerusalem deputy mayor Fleur Hassan-Nahoum.

Most top Israeli officials have stayed quiet on the vandalism, while government moves — including the introduction of a law criminalizing Christian proselytizing and the promotion of plans to turn the Mount of Olives into a national park — have stoked outrage in the Holy Land and beyond.

Netanyahu vowed to block the bill from moving forward, following pressure from outraged evangelical Christians in the United States. Among the strongest backers of Israel, evangelicals view a Jewish state as the fulfillment of a biblical prophecy.

.......
Simmering tensions in the community came to a head over Orthodox Easter rituals as Israeli police announced strict quotas on the thousands of pilgrims seeking to attend the rite of the “Holy Fire” at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher.

Citing safety concerns over lit torches being thrust through massive crowds in the church, authorities capped Saturday’s ceremony at 1,800 people. Priests who saw police open gates wide for Jews celebrating Passover, which coincided this year with Easter, alleged religious discrimination on Wednesday.

_______________
Note: Evangelicals view the Jewish state as the fulfillment of biblical prophecy. Catholics, Orthodox and Armenians do not.

This is certainly disheartening, but I believe this is a very small minority.

I donate regularly to organizations that work with Israeli Jews along with Evangelical Christians, as I know that Evangelicals truly support Israel, and yes because they see it as a fulfillment of Biblical prophecy.

I’m not happy to see this is happening but again IMO it is not the mainstream.

And you’re right, at least in my case, I would never read anything from AlJazeera as I believe it is a biased source.

Father of missing American appeals for US to ensure safe return of hostages

Jonathan Dekel-Chen's son has been missing since Hamas carried out an attack on the Nir Oz Kibbutz

Sagui Dekel-Chen - like his father - is an American-Israeli citizen.

Jonathan smiles when he describes the 35 year old: a “loyal, smart, charming, energetic” father of three with a baby on the way.

Jonathan was not in the kibbutz that day, which is near the Gaza border, but through witnesses learnt the horror of what happened.

The US has not confirmed the numbers of hostages or any names but Jonathan believes his son was kidnapped.

He now faces another nightmare. Israel's ground offensive is likely to begin in Gaza.

“I am trying to, in my limited ways, appeal to the Israeli government that the welfare of the hostages should also be the highest priority.”

Your link is about Rabin’s assassination, which I well remember.

It says nothing about your claim that Christians don’t feel welcome in Israel. Where do you get this from? Evangelical Christians are tremendous supporters of Israel and are always arranging trips there for their people.

There are still kibbutzes in Israel, in fact most of the civilians killed at home were in several kibbutzes near the Gaza border.

It’s not just a hippie 70s thing, it’s a common type of community.
I had the opportunity to visit Israel in the 90’s as part of an Intelligence mission with about a dozen other Intelligence Unit commanders from across the US. We had a Mossad officer as our guide. We visited Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Masada, the Dead Sea, the Sea of Galilee, the Jordan River, the DMZ, and we stayed in a kibbutz, Misgav Am, in Northern Israel near the Lebanese border.
At each stop we met with IDF officers, military officials, and Mossad and Shin Bet agents. They lectured us on terrorist tactics and gave presentations on invasions they had thwarted or fought through and how they did it.
We were so impressed by the Israeli people; their kindness and also their tenacity. I think we were all shocked at how small Israel is and how they remain strong despite being literally surrounded by countries whose leaders harbored groups who wanted to annihilate them. We learned a lot on that trip. These were our years of innocence before 9/11. We never imagined at that time it would soon be the United States who would be under attack by terrorists.
Of all the stories and presentations we heard on our mission, the one we heard at our kibbutz was the one that left the biggest impression on me. It was told to us by a survivor of the invasion of Misgav Am by armed terrorists:
On 7 April 1980, five terrorists from the Iraqi-backed Arab Liberation Front penetrated Misgav Am in the night and entered the nursery. They killed the kibbutz secretary and an infant boy and held the rest of the children hostage, demanding the release of about 50 terrorists held in Israeli prisons. The first raid of an IDF infantry unit was unsuccessful, but a second attempt, a few hours later, succeeded, and all the terrorists were killed. Two kibbutz members and one soldier were killed, four children and 11 soldiers were wounded.[7]
Immediately after the attack, Israeli troops entered southern Lebanon to wipe out terrorist nests and to intensify the pressure on the Palestinian terrorists in Lebanon. Israel withdrew after five days, because of heavy political pressure by the United States. In the years of the Israeli occupation of Southern Lebanon(1982–2000), the kibbutz had cordial relations with the people on the other side of the border, despite the state of war between Lebanon and Israel since 1948.[8]

During the Second Lebanon war in 2006, several thousands of IDF troops were deployed around Misgav Am, which brought heavy logistical problems regarding food, water and sanitary facilities.[citation needed]

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu Confirms Decapitated Babies and Toddlers Found at Kibbutz

Israel Defense Forces made the gruesome discovery in Kfar Aza

pokesperson for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Natanyahu on Wednesday confirmed reports dozens babies and toddlers were found with their "heads decapitated" in a kibbutz in southern Israel over the weekend.

The confirmation from spokesperson Tal Heinrich comes a day after the Israel Defense Forces said Hamas terrorists perpetrated a "massacre" in Kfar Aza, CNNreported.

Hamas on Wednesday, however, denied what it called "false" media reports claiming the organization attacked Israeli children, according to the news network.

“The Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas has strongly dismissed the false claims promoted by some Western media outlets, such as Palestinian freedom fighters killing children and targeting civilians,” Hamas wrote in a post on its Telegram channel.

Still, Israeli soldiers discovered the bodies of 40 babies in the kibbutz just outside Gaza, corroborating reports on Tuesday from journalists who viewed the aftermath of the killings.

More than 338,000 people displaced in Gaza: UN

More than 338,000 people have been forced to flee their homes in the Gaza Strip, the United Nations said, as heavy Israeli bombardments continue to hit the Palestinian enclave.

“Mass displacement across the Gaza Strip continues,” the UN humanitarian agency OCHA said in a statement sent on Thursday.

By late Wednesday, the number of displaced people in Gaza had risen by an additional 75,000 people from the figure given 24 hours earlier, reaching 338,934, it said.

Israeli forces said 1,200 people, most of them civilians, were killed in the onslaught - the worst in the country’s history.

In Gaza, officials reported more than 1,100 people have been killed in Israel’s sustained campaign of air and artillery strikes.

OCHA said nearly 220,000 people, or two-thirds of the displaced people, have sought shelter in schools run by the UN agency supporting Palestinian refugees, UNRWA.

Another nearly 15,000 people fled to schools run by the Palestinian Authority, while more than 100,000 were being sheltered by relatives, neighbours and a church and other facilities in Gaza City.
