More detail on Gaza casualties

As we reported earlier, the Hamas-run Health Ministry in Gaza says 1,055 people have been killed in the Gaza Strip and 5,184 injured since Israel began its air strikes.
Yesterday, it said 260 children and 230 women were among those killed. It also said six medical personnel had been killed and another 15 injured, and that eight journalists had also died.

The UN's Palestinian refugee agency says nine of its staff have been killed in Gaza since Saturday.

The Committee for the Protection of Journalists is collating reports of journalists that have been killed, injured or reported missing in both Israel and Gaza - it lists seven reported dead in Gaza.

Number killed in Gaza rises to 1,055 - health ministry

We've just had an update from the Palestinian health ministry - it says 1,055 people have been killed and more than 5,100 others injured since Israel's retaliatory air strikes began on Saturday.

The Ministry of Health said earlier nearly 60% of the injured people in Gaza were women and children.

"What is life like in the Gaza Strip?

2 million Palestinians live there. This is a very densely built-up area, which is permanently on the verge of a humanitarian catastrophe.

After 2007, Israel, in cooperation with Egypt, placed a blockade on this place, controlled the land and sea borders, and controlled the flow of goods and people.

Hamas created a southern front in the conflict with Israel in Gaza and conducted rocket and ground attacks on the Jewish state, including using a network of tunnels.
Israel destroys them, but - as you can see - not all of them.

There has been a continuous "exchange of pleasantries" between Hamas and Israel over the past 16 years. Their main form was rocket fire and bombing.

However, after 2021, Hamas has calmed down somewhat. However, other organizations became active, such as Islamic Jihad - another armed group.
But overall, there were more confrontations in the West Bank than in the Gaza Strip. This is where Israel feared escalation and where it kept its troops.
This has somewhat lulled Tel Aviv's vigilance when it comes to Gaza.
Hamas took advantage of Israel's weakness.
And Israel was caught off guard."

Gaza hospitals have become refugee camps, says surgeon

British-Palestinian surgeon, Ghasan Abu Sitta, says the hospital where he's working in Gaza has turned into a refugee camp.

"People are afraid and so they're bringing their families to stay in the compound of the hospital as a safe space," he told the Today programme earlier.

The surgeon said there was a "continuous stream of wounded people", but that his Shifa hospital was already at capacity - like most other hospitals in Gaza.

"Gaza has around 2200, 2500 beds and we've already had 4500 wounded," Abu Sitta said.

Some are also sheltering in UN schools.
The UN has distributed meals to 73,000 people already, as well as providing money for people to buy food.
The UN aims to distribute food to 300,000 people within the next few days.

I hope the water situation works. Can't imagine crowding into places as shelter without water.

May peace somehow prevail.

There are reports that the sole power station in Gaza has stopped working.

Earlier, authorities said the plant had 10 to 12 hours left of fuel.

Israel cut off its own electricity supply to Gaza on Monday as part of what it called a “complete siege” in response to the Hamas attack.

Apart from the grid, some Palestinians in Gaza rely on generators. However, those will also be lacking in fuel.

Gaza 'will soon be a tent city' says Israeli official as IDF launches 250 airstrikes in one hour into 'Nest of Terror' and 'infantry, artillery and 300,000 reservists' mass on the border 'ready to execute' ground offensive

  • An Israeli defense official told Channel 13 News that Gaza will become a 'tent city', as the country's defense minister said he has 'released all restraints'
  • It comes as IDF spokesperson said troops and artillery are close to Gaza in preparation for a ground invasion 'to execute the mission we have been given'
Gaza will become a 'tent city' and every building will be razed, an Israeli defense official has vowed as the country's military lines up on the border.

In the early hours of Wednesday, Israeli forces conducted 250 airstrikes in just one hour across northern and eastern parts of the Gaza strip in revenge for Hamas' terror attacks.

Now an Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) spokesman said they are sending 'infantry, armoured soldiers, artillery corps', plus 300,000 reservists 'close to the Gaza Strip to execute the mission that we have been given by the Israeli government'.

Jonathan Conricus added: 'That is to make sure that Hamas at the end of this war won't have any military capabilities by which they can threaten or kill Israeli civilians.'

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
AOC decries ‘bigotry and callousness’ of pro-Palestinian rally in New York

US congresswoman says ‘it should not be hard to shut down hatred and antisemitism where we see it’ and calls for urgent ceasefire

Criticising a pro-Palestinian rally held in Times Square in New York City in the aftermath of Hamas attacks on Israel which left hundreds dead, the progressive congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said: “It should not be hard to shut down hatred and antisemitism where we see it.”

[…]

The Sunday rally in New York, endorsed by members of the Democratic Socialists of America and promoted by the group’s New York chapter, attracted a crowd of more than 1,000. Some chanted “resistance is justified when people are occupied” and there were reports of a Nazi emblem being shown and Israeli flags burned and trodden on.

Amid attacks from Republicans, Ocasio-Cortez, a New York representative popularly known as AOC, was among Democrats to condemn the rally.

Speaking to Politico, she said shutting down hatred and antisemitism was “a core tenet of solidarity”.

“The bigotry and callousness expressed in Times Square on Sunday were unacceptable and harmful in this devastating moment,” she said.

“It also did not speak for the thousands of New Yorkers who are capable of rejecting Hamas’s horrifying attacks against innocent civilians as well as the grave injustices and violence Palestinians face under occupation.”

Earlier, Ocasio-Cortez was among leading congressional progressives to call for a ceasefire. In a statement, she said: “I condemn Hamas’s attack in the strongest possible terms.

“No child and family should ever endure this kind of violence and fear, and this violence will not solve the ongoing oppression and occupation in the region. An immediate ceasefire and de-escalation is urgently needed to save lives.”

Governments scramble to evacuate citizens from Israel amid pleas for help

Countries including Canada, Germany and Australia organise evacuation flights while the US and UK insist commercial options still available as Israeli forces gather near Gaza

Countries around the world have been scrambling to evacuate their citizens from Israel after the deadly attack launched by Palestinian militants at the weekend, while some foreigners, faced with cancelled flights, have pleaded for help from their governments.

People from the US, Australia, Argentina, Cambodia, Canada, Nepal, Thailand, Russia, the UK, Ukraine and France and elsewhere are confirmed to be among those killed in the violence.

[…]

Many airlines, including Virgin Atlantic, Air France, Lufthansa, Emirates, United Airlines, Delta Air Lines and American Airlines have cancelled or delayed flights from Israel.

[…]

Ben Gurion Airport, Israel’s main airport, was “crowded” and “hectic,” said Jang Jeong-yoon, a 62-year-old who was on board the Korean Air flight home after travelling to Israel to take part in the festival of Sukkot.

“As flights were cancelled or delayed, there was fear and people were rushing to leave the country,” she said.

Other countries, including the US and the UK, have said they have no plans to evacuate citizens, despite calls from lawmakers and those affected.

The US is not “actively considering” emergency evacuation of its citizens, a spokesperson for the national security council said on Monday. In a statement on the same day, president Joe Biden said “For those who desire to leave, commercial flights and ground options are still available.”

Several members of congress have urged the government to evacuate US citizens. In a letter to secretary of state Antony Blinken, representative Grace Meng said she had “harrowing reports from constituents who remain in Israel and are seeking to return to the United States as soon as possible”.

A woman from London told the BBC she had contacted the British embassy in Israel but received no response. She said she was stuck in Tel Aviv with three other adults and 12 children.

“We are very disappointed as we live in England and no one is willing to help us get back safely,” she said. “What are we supposed to do in this time of war?”

The UK has advised against travel to parts of Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories but has no plans to evacuate citizens. The foreign secretary, James Cleverly, told LBC radio on Tuesday ministers were “working with” the aviation industry to ensure commercial flights remain available to Britons looking to leave Israel.

Meanwhile Cyprus said on Tuesday it was ready to help with the evacuation of citizens of third countries who might want to leave Israel.

The government has activated a repatriation scheme known as Estia, which offers temporary accommodation and assistance to European Union and third-country nationals fleeing areas of crisis. Eighty five citizens of Portugal and Spain had already arrived in the country on Tuesday.

Hamas transformed an institute of knowledge into an institute of destruction. A short while ago, the IDF struck an important Hamas operational, political and military center in Gaza—the Islamic University. Hamas transformed a university into a training camp for weapons development and military intelligence.

Mains electricity in Gaza has gone out

Mains electricity has gone out in Gaza after its sole power station ran out of fuel.

Since Hamas's attack at the weekend, Israel has imposed a siege of Gaza, cutting its supplies of electricity, fuel, food, goods and water.

It means people in Gaza will rely on generators for electricity - if they have the fuel to run them.

No internet, electricity or water

Beth Timmins
BBC News

Gaza resident Kamal Mashharawi spoke to the BBC a short time ago from a basement shelter with 45 people in.

“It’s very difficult - we don’t have water, we don’t have internet, we don’t have electricity,” he says.

His children are injured and his lungs hurt. Kamal has lost a few members of his family but is unable to contact the others because the internet is out.

“We tried to make road trips to the nearest supermarket but it was unsafe because of the explosions,” he tells Newshour.

On the phone, Kamal says his heart is beating as he looks for the next strike, thinking "am I the next person?"

“I don’t think civilians deserve to die - they should be left out of the conflict," he says.
"I can’t really blame Hamas, I can’t really blame Israel, but I say that we civilians are affected.

“We are the people who are not part of this conflict and we’re paying it off."
