Will Hezbollah join the war?

AP has taken a look at whether Lebanon’s Hezbollah is likely to join the war.

Hezbollah, which like Hamas is supported by Iran, has so far been on the fence about joining the fighting between Israel and the Gaza Strip’s Islamic militant rulers.

While Israel’s political and military leaders weigh the next move, they are nervously watching Hezbollah on Israel’s northern border and have sent troop reinforcements to the area. Hezbollah, with an arsenal of tens of thousands of rockets and missiles capable of hitting virtually anywhere in Israel, is viewed as a far more formidable foe than Hamas.

Israel is anxious that opening a new front in the country’s north could change the tide of the war, with Hezbollah’s military caliber far superior to that of Hamas. But the fighting could be equally devastating for Hezbollah and Lebanon.

Israel is especially worried about Hezbollah’s precision-guided missiles, which are believed to be aimed at strategic targets like natural gas rigs and power stations.

Qassim Qassir, a Lebanese analyst close to the group, said Hezbollah “will not allow Hamas’ destruction and won’t leave Gaza alone to face a ground incursion.”

“When the situation requires further escalation, then Hezbollah will do so,” he told The Associated Press.

But the possibility of a new front in Lebanon also brings back bitter memories of a vicious monthlong war between Hezbollah and Israel in 2006 that ended in a stalemate and a tense detente between the two sides. Lebanon is in the fourth year of a crippling economic crisis and is bitterly divided between Hezbollah and its allies and opponents, paralyzing the political system.

EU opens investigation into X over alleged disinformation

The EU is investigating Elon Musk's X over the possible spread of terrorist and violent content, and hate speech, after Hamas' attack on Israel.

The investigation, the first under the EU's new tech rules, will also look at the way complaints are handled.

X, formerly known as Twitter, said it had removed hundreds of Hamas-affiliated accounts from the platform.

TikTok and Meta have also been warned by the EU for not doing enough to tackle disinformation.

Social media firms have seen a surge in misinformation about the conflict between Israel and Hamas, including doctored images and mislabelled videos.

The EU's industry chief, Thierry Breton, confirmed on Thursday the bloc had sent X a "formal request for information" to determine whether the platform was complying with the Digital Services Act (DSA) - a law designed to protect users of big tech platforms which recently came into effect.

What are the rules of war – and how do they apply to the Israel-Gaza conflict?

Amid the horror of the attacks by Hamas on Israel and the response by the Israeli military in Gaza, there have been calls for both sides to abide by international law and accusations of breaches.

So what is the framework of international laws that is supposed to govern war or armed conflicts?

‘Civilians should not be targeted …’

[…]

A central tenet of international humanitarian law, which is applicable to all participants, not only state actors, is that civilians should not be targeted. Additionally, it dictates that an attack must not be carried out if it is “expected to cause incidental loss of civilian life, injury to civilians, damage to civilian objects, or a combination thereof” that would be excessive in relation to the anticipated military gains.

There are many other provisions, which also prohibit hostage taking, excessive destruction and appropriation of property and attacks on hospitals. Another provision states that access to humanitarian relief for civilians in need must be allowed.

‘The buildings are now ashes’: nowhere feels safe from Israeli bombs in Gaza

Hundreds of thousands displaced as even conflict-weary Palestinians fear they are in uncharted territory

[…]

“Anyone who is near Hamas terrorists will put their lives in danger,” the flyers said. “Adhering to IDF [Israel Defence Forces] instructions will prevent you from being exposed to danger.”

Residents in Beit Lahiya, however, said they had been hit by airstrikes before the warnings were delivered.

As Palestinians lined up outside bakeries and grocery stores in Gaza on Thursday, after spending the night surrounded by the ruins of pulverised neighbourhoods darkened by a near-total power outage, those “rules’ no longer held.

Israel has stopped all deliveries of food, water, fuel and electricity to the tiny enclave, while its crossing with Egypt is unusable.

Israel has pounded neighbourhoods once thought of as relatively safe such as central Gaza City’s al-Rimal, one of the wealthier areas. It is now littered with rubble and shattered trees after dozens of airstrikes.

[…]

People who have lived through rounds of violence in the past speak of a different kind of fear this time. A sense that, as familiar as the enclave is with bombardments, Gaza is now in uncharted territory.

[…]

“There was no warning or anything,” said Hashem Abu Manea, 58, who lost his 15-year-old daughter, Joanna, when a strike late on Tuesday levelled his home in Gaza City.

“We can’t wait to bury bodies in designated places. We have to bury them in random areas scattered around between the houses or in empty lots donated by landlords,” said Adel Hamada, a volunteer helping with burials at Khan Yunis.

Gaza morgue has run out of room

The morgue at Gaza’s biggest hospital overflowed Thursday as bodies came in faster than relatives could claim them, the Associated Press reports:

The morgue at Gaza City’s Shifa hospital can only handle some 30 bodies at a time, and workers had to stack corpses three high outside the walk-in cooler and put dozens more, side by side, in the parking lot. Some were placed in a tent, and others were sprawled on the cement, under the sun.

“The body bags started and just kept coming and coming and now it’s a graveyard,” Abu Elias Shobaki, a nurse at Shifa, told AP, referring to the parking lot.

“I am emotionally, physically exhausted. I just have to stop myself from thinking about how much worse it will get.”

Lines of white body bags — soles of bare feet sticking out from one, a bloodied arm from another — brought the scale and intensity of Israel’s retaliation on Gaza into sharp relief. Hospital officials asked stricken family members to identify their loved ones. Some peered into the body bags, then collapsed into tears or screams.

While I would agree, the only way that works is when both sides actually want the same thing.
Exactly! Hamas has no interest in co-existing, they are only interested in destroying the Jews. JMO

The festival is a key to this attack, imo. Like most raves that attract thousands of young people the details regarding the actual location are secret until the last minute. They are unlicensed events which adds to the cachet as well as to avoid any whiff of law enforcement shutting them down. Just as they are in North America and Europe, the secrecy is to avoid scrutiny of LE so they usually take place in unused warehouse s, farmers fields in the middle of nowhere, etc. Drugs abound; there is no attempt to keep young people away, etc. Ticket are issued online and ticket holders are advised by a phone call, very close the the time the event takes place, where the location is. The organizers of the rave were Osher and Michael Vaknin; Osher is deceased, he was killed during the rave and his brother is missing. Survivors of the rave should be able to advise the ADF when they received notification of where the festival was to be held. For so many Hamas terrorists to engage in the attack either means many were already attending the event or they hacked the phones or computers of those who organized the event. MOO

I wonder if it was likely to be located near the Gaza border? Did Hamas know that? When did the organizers know where it was going to be? IF their accounts were hacked, then people could have known ahead of time and what better way to hit many by surprise all at once than to hit a music festival with 1000s of young people likely drinking or taking some drugs and being up all night and now tired from a fun filled night listening to music and dancing.. and then in comes terrorists from the air and ground.

US to send more arms to Israel before expected Gaza invasion

Ground forces are gathering near the border, as UN says that Gaza is dangerously close to running out of food and water

[…]

Antony Blinken, the US secretary of state, pledged his country’s support for Israel “today, tomorrow, every day”.He told the prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, on a visit to the region that Israel “may be strong enough on your own to defend yourself but, as long as America exists, you will never, ever have to. We will always be there by your side”.

The declaration of solidarity came as Israeli troops continued to build close to Gaza before an expected ground invasion. Intense bombing of the narrow territory that is home to 2.3 million Palestinians continued for a sixth consecutive day as concerns mounted about the humanitarian crisis.

Gaza hospitals 'in a critical situation'

“We are in a critical situation,” Ashraf al-Qidra, the spokesman for the Gaza Health Ministry, has told the Associated Press.

“Ambulances can’t get to the wounded, the wounded can’t get to intensive care, the dead can’t get to the morgue.”

Israel’s parliament approves national unity government

In case you missed this earlier: Israel’s parliament approved Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s emergency unity government on Thursday, including a number of centrist opposition lawmakers, to display its determination to fight the war with Hamas in Gaza.

The government, approved after Saturday’s attack by the militant Islamist group Hamas that governs the Gaza Strip, underlines the suspension of normal political rules during one of the most serious crises in Israel’s history.

While I would agree, the only way that works is when both sides actually want the same thing.
Both sides will never come together after this, even if the Palestinians wanted it, this war will convince them that it's all Israel's fault. I am sure they are not fully aware of what is really going on and both sides are living in hell on earth. All JMO

UK's Sunak pledges 'significant' military aid to Israel

UK PM Rishi Sunak has just spoken to Israeli PM Netanyahu, according to a statement from No 10 Downing Street.

During the call, Sunak said "the UK stands side by side with Israel in fighting terror and agreed that Hamas can never again be able to perpetrate atrocities against the Israeli people".

Sunak told his Israeli counterpart he had "authorised the sending of a significant support package to the region, including RAF surveillance aircraft, two Royal Navy ships to patrol in the Eastern Mediterranean, three Merlin helicopters and a detachment of Royal Marines".

The statement adds: "Noting that Hamas has enmeshed itself in the civilian population in Gaza, the Prime Minister said it was important to take all possible measures to protect ordinary Palestinians and facilitate humanitarian aid."

Earlier on Thursday, Sunak spoke to the president of Egypt to discuss "the importance" of opening the Rafah border crossing to allow British and other people trapped in Gaza to flee.

“They agreed to remain in close contact and to explore any further support the UK can provide,” No 10 says.

Hamas hints Iran, Hezbollah not involved in decision to attack Israel

Joanna Walters

Hamas just gave unprecedented briefing in English to world media, via Telegram, the Guardian’s Jerusalem correspondent, Beth McKernan is reporting on the hop, via X/Twitter.

She says that the militant group that controls Gaza said that “the decision to launch a military operation was entirely Palestinian.”

The subtext appears to be that Hamas allies Iran and the Lebanese group Hezbollah were not involved in Saturday’s surprise and merciless assault on Israel by militants breaking out of Gaza to launch their attack.

Bethan also reports that Hamas made spurious claims that Israeli civilians weren’t deliberately targeted and that the attacks were aimed entirely at Israeli Defence Force (IDF) bases.
