I wonder what Israel would do if they released the hostages. I kind of feel like it wouldn't matter.

The air raid sirens/alerts are online all day long. I see them on X. Israeli news stations also show them. The app is Red Alert, yes.

There haven't been any in hours and hours. Makes me wonder if they are low on rockets. I hope they are.

Israeli military has told 1.1 millions Gazans to move to south, UN says

The United Nations said early on Friday it has been told by the Israeli military that some 1.1 million Palestinians in Gaza should relocate to the enclave’s south within the next 24 hours.

“The United Nations considers it impossible for such a movement to take place without devastating humanitarian consequences,” UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in a statement.

“The United Nations strongly appeals for any such order, if confirmed, to be rescinded avoiding what could transform what is already a tragedy into a calamitous situation,” he said.

Dujarric said the order by the Israeli military also applied to all UN staff and those sheltered in UN facilities, including schools, health centres and clinics.

Until this week, I had NO IDEA so many people around the world hate Jewish folks the way they do.
It's mind-blowing, really.
I was raised Catholic. I met my husband in '77. He was raised Jewish. It was a pretty controversial thing we did by getting married. I really don't think about our differences in religion over all these past years but yes, the hate is spreading in the past few years. It's rather unsettling.

A very reasonable observation, bestill

I, too, feel that there is no answer and both sides are getting farther apart than ever.
one offensive begets a bigger offensive and now there is another generation with fresh wounds, dead relatives and hatreds. A continent away and I do not feel safe.

We are working to find out as much as we can about the reported evacuation order for 1.1 million people in Gaza.

Axios is reporting the news of that the IDF has notified the UN that all Palestinians and UN staff north of Wadi Gaza must evacuate – and that this means 1.1m people.

It appears that Axios has spoken directly to UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, the news organisation also reports that it has spoken to “another source with direct knowledge”.

It is unclear if the Reuters report is based on a statement seen by Reuters.

Axios interpreted the order as a sign that Israel would shortly launch a ground offensive.

The Guardian has not seen a statement from the UN Secretary General’s spokesperson or from the IDF confirming that this order was received.

More shortly.

This is what Axios reports that it has been told by UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric:

Today, just before midnight local time, team leaders of the UN Office of the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs and the Department of Safety and Security in Gaza were informed by their liaison officers in the Israeli military that the entire population of Gaza north of Wadi Gaza should relocate to southern Gaza within the next 24 hours,” Dujarric told Axios.

“This amounts to approximately 1.1 million people. The same order applied to all UN staff and those sheltered in UN facilities – including schools, health centers and clinics,” Dujarric said.

“The United Nations considers it impossible for such a movement to take place without devastating humanitarian consequences,” Dujarric added.

“The United Nations strongly appeals for any such order, if confirmed, to be rescinded avoiding what could transform what is already a tragedy into a calamitous situation.”

Greek warship reportedly sent to Eastern Mediterranean

Sofia Bettiza
BBC News

Hours ago in Brussels, defence ministers from the Nato military alliance of Western nations were briefed by Yoav Gallant, the Israeli defence minister.

Nato allies condemned Hamas's "unjustifiable acts of terror" - but also urged Israel to respond with "proportionality".

"As the conflict unfolds, the protection of civilians is essential," said Nato Secretary General Jens Stoltenerg. "There are rules of war."

When it comes to concrete help, a number of Nato allies say they are providing practical support to Israel.

A Greek warship is reportedly being deployed to the Eastern Mediterranean – it’s likely to be stationed off the Israel-Lebanon border.

And Germany said two of their armed Heron combat drones were being used by Israeli forces.

Most of all, what Israel is after is diplomatic backing for the operation that it is conducting in Gaza. And it got that from Nato allies.

That's just not feasible, imo.

While warnings are being given, how many people are hearing them if they don't have electricity? They wouldn't be watching tv. Maybe radios or cellphones might still be working but over time, those batteries would die too. Not to mention that fuel may be in short supply, roads bombed out, vehicles or public transportion options may have been destroyed, etc.

There are probably no good options for those caught in the crossfire at this point. Imo.

IDF warns 1 million Palestinians in northern Gaza to evacuate within 24 hours — UN

The IDF notified the United Nations at midnight on Friday that the entire Palestinian population north of Wadi Gaza should relocate to southern Gaza within 24 hours, a UN spokesperson says.

The message indicates that the IDF could be readying to launch a ground invasion after six days of aerial bombardment in response to the massive Hamas onslaught on Saturday.

Roughly 1.1 million Palestinians live north of Wadi Gaza, the spokesperson says in a statement.

The warning applied to UN staff and those sheltered in UN facilities in those areas.

“The United Nations considers it impossible for such a movement to take place without devastating humanitarian consequences,” the spokesperson adds. “The United Nations strongly appeals for any such order, if confirmed, to be rescinded avoiding what could transform what is already a tragedy into a calamitous situation.”

The spokesperson says the warning was delivered to team leaders of the UN Office of the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs and the UN’s Department of Safety and Security in Gaza by their liaison officers in the IDF.

Israel has already imposed a complete siege on Gaza; shutting off water, electricity and gas; shuttering its own border crossings into the enclave; and bombing Egypt’s Rafah crossing, temporarily rendering it unusable as well.

It’s a humanitarian catastrophe.

Reuters correspondent for the UN, Michelle Nichols, is also reporting the news that the UN has been informed by the IDF that 1.1 million people should evacuate from northern Gaza in the next 24 hours, a task the UN spokesperson said was “impossible”.

More now on that news, via Reuters:

Israel’s military informed the United Nations early on Friday that the 1.1 million Palestinians in Gaza should relocate to the enclave’s south within the next 24 hours, a UN spokesman said, in what Palestinians fear could be a precursor to a planned Israeli ground offensive.

The Israeli military did not immediately provide comment on the warning, which came as Israel amassed tanks near the Gaza border and pounded the Palestinian enclave with air strikes following a deadly Hamas militant attack in Israel.

Dujarric said the order by the Israeli military also applied to all U.N. staff and those sheltered in UN facilities, including schools, health centres and clinics.

Israel’s mission to the United Nations in New York did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Meanwhile a Hamas official has told Reuters that the relocation warning is “fake propaganda” and has urged Gazans “not to fall for it”, the news agency reports.

Palestinians have no safe place from Israel's bombs in Gaza

When Hamas fires rockets at Israel, advanced warning detectors set off alarms in targeted neighborhoods, civilians flee to an extensive network of bomb shelters, and the vaunted Iron Dome system works to intercept projectiles in the air.

But in Gaza, none of those high-tech defenses were available to protect Maisara Baroud, 47, when his apartment building was hit by Israeli airstrikes Monday night. The only thing that saved him and his family: A neighbor yelling from the street.

The neighbor received a call from Israeli military, giving him a heads up that a strike at a nearby residential building was imminent. Still, the neighbor told Baroud and the 15 other family members living in Baroud's building — including nine children — to get out.

The first strike wrecked most of the six buildings on the block, including Baroud's.

"My building was no longer livable — it was a skeleton of a house left," he said. "The doors were destroyed, the building's exterior walls were all gone, the windows shattered."

Still, Baroud and others assumed the worst was over and headed back into the building to salvage their belongings. Minutes later, the neighbor received a follow-up call from the Israeli military that a follow-up bombing was coming, and the families fled again.

A second strike destroyed Baroud's home, reducing his building and his art studio to rubble.
This is the reality for Palestinians living in Gaza without the protection of a robust civil defense infrastructure. With no air raid sirens or bomb shelters, the more than 2 million Palestinians living in the besieged territory — half of whom are children — rely on rare phone calls or text messages from the Israeli military to alert them of imminent strikes.

"In Gaza, we don't have anything ... you have nowhere to go, no bomb shelters, no refuge, you are in the street," Baroud said. "If you're lucky enough to even get an alert to tell you to get out of the house, you leave saying, 'Thank God.'"

The lack of protection serves as a stark contrast to the civil defense systems of Israel, which has faced intense barrages of rocket fire from Hamas in recent days. Israel boasts elaborate and technologically advanced capabilities — ranging from early radar detection to the Iron Dome — meant to protect its civilians in the event of an attack.

In Gaza, the call or text alerts are far from guaranteed and — at most — give residents a few minutes to evacuate. Often, it's just a guessing game.
