The last text message sent by a British hiker who vanished in the Italian Alps has been revealed.

Matthew Hall, 33, has been missing for five days since he disappeared on July 9th while walking in the mountains of Valchiavenna.

An urgent search effort was launched when Mr Hall failed to show up for checkout at the local bed and breakfast where he was staying.

All attempts to contact him have been unsuccessful but his last communication has now been revealed.

On the day Mr Hall went missing he texted a friend to say he'd lost the trail and stopped to rest.

This is the last time anyone heard anything from the hiker.

I hope he will be found alive, but... People, when you go on a solo hike, choose the route beforehand and inform someone about your plans. That's the bare minimum.
Also, I hope he had paper map and proper supplies (clothes, food, water).

A large-scale search is underway in the Italian Alps following the disappearance of a British hiker.

[...]

Valchiavenna is a breathtaking region of the Italian Alps, located in the Lombardy region of Northern Italy. Due to its alpine location, the region is a popular spot for hikers, who can take advantage of multiple short and multi-day routes.

Despite its popularity, conditions in the surrounding mountains can be unforgiving, with plenty of steep ascents and tricky underfoot terrain.

I'm curious as to that first picture of him. He looks to be scaling what appears to be a structure of some sort. Cellular tower? I'm assuming that was from his employment - so he's likely versed in day to day safety precautions by nature (and obviously not afraid of heights) Hope he is just hunkered down with a minor injury. Update: This article states the last he was physically seen was in a pub. Bt when he was discovered missing his backpack was gone, but not his personal papers. Search for missing hiker as last text sent before vanishing revealed

He wears PETZL safety equipment. PETZL is an Italian safety gear brand selling worldwide I think. But mostly in Italy.

Last message to friends was stating he lost his way and was resting. Then nothing.
There are massive search efforts ongoing, On the side above Borgonuovo di Piuro. The operations are coordinated by the Prefecture and involve the carabinieri, the financial police and the mountain rescue.

'He has a black backpack with him. Left for an excursion to Savogno/Dasile from Borgonuovo or Pianazzola/Daloo/Lagunch. He signalled that he had taken the wrong path at 1 p.m., last contact''. So some more useful information: ''He was wearing a beige T-shirt and had a black backpack with him. The photo shown is the last receipt from him that day (when shortly after 1 pm he sent a photo to a friend from the cross on Alpe Daloo, above Chiavenna)''.

ETA

From Borgonuovo to Dasile by foot : 13 mins

From Borgonuovo to Savogno by foot: 2h

From Chiavenna to Pianazzola by foot 27 mins

From Chiavenna to Dalo 2h30

From Chiavenna to Lagúnc by foot 3h

Therefore this is the area where he MAY be (in red), and the search efforts are currently above Borgonuovo (green circle more or less)

The mother of a missing British hiker who vanished in the Italian Alps has spoken of how she is living ‘someone else’s nightmare’ as friends join the search.

Matthew Hall, 33, disappeared last Wednesday while walking in the Lombardy region of northern Italy.

Five of his friends flew out to help the search and rescue effort on Sunday after he still failed to make contact.

His mother Sara told Hull Live: ‘I feel like I’m living someone else’s nightmare but I’ve just been blown sideways by all of his friends. I didn’t know them all but I do now.

She added: ‘He’s fit, he’s resourceful, so that’s what’s keeping me positive. He’s well travelled, and a solo traveller. He’s a walker and has all the gear. We just need to find him and bring him home to safety.’

He texted a photo of himself to a friend at 1.20pm that day, when he had stopped to rest at Alpe Daloo, north of the town of Chiavenna according to a local community group on Facebook.

Let's hope he has some clothing in the backpack. And that he did not make the often seen mistake of the tourists lost in the mountain; seeing the town in the valley they are trying to reach it by just going towards it and away from any path, usually getting themselves into some deadly difficult terrain.

One of the 20 rescuers, who are combing the area, assisted by a helicopter, told The Times that they are "concerned because there are plenty of dangerous gullies and ravines in that area."

His mother, Sara Foster, said her concerns started when her son failed to board his planned flight to Manchester on Saturday afternoon. A police started started hours later. “It was typical for Matthew to not have been in touch to avoid paying for data but now I was worrying, although not panicking," she said.

But she has been anxiously waiting at home for updates from the Italian authorities - says she has been “blown sideways” by the support she has received from Matthew's friends and the wider public. She is also grateful to a group of his pals have flown over to join the search teams, who have spent time analysing the last photo he sent to try and pin down its exact location

Matthew’s employers, Quickline Communcations in Hull, are also sending six staff members out to join the efforts.

His close friend Ben Lee has travelled with a group of friends to Chiavenna. He said his missing pal was last spotted by a girl at a local church on the day he vanished. "It kind of confirmed which route he was going on before there was a sighting of him later on in the day, at a certain point on the trail," he said. "We've got mountain rescue out at the minute. There's four teams, three helicopters and they're going to carry on searching."

Did he get turned around and lose sense of which direction to go?

Hopefully Matthew is found soon as safe as can be.

Maybe he dropped his mobile and just held up somewhere hoping he will be found.

Surely he will think friends etc will get the word out that he has not contacted anyone and send out a search party.

Refer to #10 above.

He lost the path. Treacherous terrain. Now a week since last heard from. I feel this is a recovery operation only, unless called off.

Unfortunately Matthew was found deceased

A fall of over a hundred metres that left him no escape

He was found lifeless this afternoon at about 150 metres under the panoramic cross of Dalò, on the east side of the mountain.

RIP Matthew and most heartfelt condolensces to his family and friends.

According to the article in Italian his mother arrived at Malpensa Airport just hours after the tragic discovery. My heart goes out to her and all who loved him. RIP Matthew.

Such a beautiful place. Rest in Peace.

Noticed on openstreetmaps there’s a via Ferrata directly below the cross, through whilst the map has locations of guideposts / info boards, it doesn’t actually show the route of the path at all. So you could easily lose your way trying to follow the via ferrata even with most hiking apps, and get in to serious trouble. Maybe this was how an otherwise experienced hiker lost their way?
