Circumstances of Disappearance
Santina Renda disappeared as she was playing with other children in the neighborhood where she lived with her family. Vincenzo Campanella, a 17-year-old cousin of Santina’s with mental problems, confessed that he had hidden Santina’s body, after she had died in a motorbike accident caused by him. But then he retracted his confession. Two years later, on February 5, 1992, an 8-year-old cousin of Santina’s, Maurizio Nunzio Renda, disappeared. His body was found the same day; he had been beaten to death with an iron bar. Vincenzo Campanella, after confessing his guilt, was tried summarily and sentenced to 29 years in prison. He was not given a life sentence because he was considered mentally unstable. However, I found an article where the sister stated that she was one of the children that was playing with Santina that day, and here's what she remembers about it : “When we left school we came home for lunch and then in the afternoon we went to the courtyard under the house to play. . A white car was driving by, at one point it stopped and a man with a full beard and sunglasses got out. I don't remember if he lured her with candy or puppets, but all I know is that they grabbed her and put her in the car. Since then, my sister has not come home."
Also, the day after the disappearance, family received a tip that a man from Lamezia Terme who was on his way to go fishing, saw two little girls in a gyspsy camp. An older one, and younger one who was crying. Later when he saw the show "Chi L'ha Visto?" dedicated to Santina's disappearance, he told his wife "That's the girl I saw" and then went to report it to the police.
Here's a sketch of the male suspect :
