Jaidyn Leskie death will haunt us all until a killer is convicted

Jaidyn disappeared from his Moe home in June 1997 while he was being babysat by his mother Bilynda Williams’ boyfriend, unemployed mechanic Greg Domaszewicz.

The 14-month-old’s tiny, battered body was found six months later, weighted with a crowbar in the freezing waters of Blue Rock dam.

Babysitter Mr Domaszewicz was charged but pleaded not guilty to murder, and walked free after a jury acquitted him. He has always maintained innocence, claiming all he did was leave Jaidyn home alone while he drove to pick up Bilynda.

Every available avenue must be explored to draw a line under this despicable crime if Jaidyn’s family — and indeed our entire community — are ever to heal. We must strive to uncover the true facts behind Jaidyn’s tragic fate and ensure someone is held to account for his premature death.

As the coroner probing Jaidyn’s death noted, the toddler was a “helpless 14-month-old infant, requiring total support, care and protection by an adult”.

He didn’t get that support and protection in life — but as a community, we must continue to rally to ensure he receives justice in memoriam.

I can't believe little Jaidyn's killer hasn't been brought to justice.

Jaidyn Leskie, the final, tragic chapter

Now we may never know the truth.

From the moment that Moe toddler Jaidyn Leskie disappeared from his babysitter's home in the early hours of June 15, 1997, he has seemed doubly lost.

Not only had he physically vanished, but he was lost behind the bizarre circumstances of that disappearance: the coincidence of a pig's head being thrown at the house that night; his babysitter's puerile "prank" that the toddler had been burned and was in hospital; the romantic entanglements of his family history. He was forgotten too in the soap-operatic claims, "tossed about like confetti", at the Supreme Court murder trial of his babysitter, Greg Domaszewicz.

And now, with the decision of Deputy State Coroner Iain West not to hold a public inquest into his death, it seems the final chapter of Jaidyn's short life has been closed - without arriving at The Answer.

In a one-page and three-line report dated May 27, Mr West reported that under the Coroners Regulations 1996 he had conducted a record of investigation into the death of Jaidyn, who was 13 months and two weeks old when he disappeared.

Jaidyn Leskie, the final, tragic chapter

On June 12, 1997, three days before Jaidyn was reported missing, Bilynda returned from a short shopping trip to pick up her son and was shocked to find Domaszewicz had cut Jaidyn’s hair.

He had shaved Jaidyn’s head at the front to resemble his own receding hairline. All that was left was an ugly half-moon of stubble.
