Does anyone have more info on the possibility of a radiation leak from one of the reactors in Japan? I saw it as a banner on CNN, but the TV was muted at the time.

I believe they are purposely allowing a small leak to relieve pressure right now, until they can get more coolant. Correct me if I'm wrong someone.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/japan/8376945/Entire-Japanese-city-on-fire-after-earthquake.html

Kesennuma city, located 300 miles north east of Tokyo in Miyagi prefecture, was near the epicentre of the magnitude 8.9 earthquake.Night time aerial footage shows large swathes of the city, home to 74,000 people, on fire. The earthquake, which struck at 2:47 local time, has split highways, flattened buildings and ignited fires across the northeastern Pacific coast.

more of the story, and a video of the fires, can be found at above link

This new earthquake could signal a lot of different things - one, the stress from the first quake put pressure on a fault-line, and it ruptured. Depending on where/how deep/what angle energy was expended, we may have a second round of tsunamis. It could also be a foreshock to a larger quake; it could also be something of little concern, meaning nothing but quake damage.

What I worry about is the whole southern/western/northwestern sections of the Pacific Rim has let go in a series of large magnitude quakes; that puts pressure on the eastern part, which is Mexico/West Coast of US/Alaska and parts of the most northern area of Russia.

Which means that pressure is building here. And it will not be pretty when it lets go.

Well, shoot. Dunno what to think about that, exept to check earthquake supplies.

Folks, you have to watch this video MARCH 11-15TH IS THE SAME ALIGNMENT AS LAST YEAR'S AXIS.

This video was uploaded on March 9, 2011 -- predicting a significant earthquake.

A perfect alignment of comet eliment and earth (sun center, etc) -- all aligned.

Predicts tokyo, san fran, los angeles, mexico city, and tehran -- all on the edges of the tetonic plates.

DANG!

Second quake...now I'm not one to be running through the streets holding the sign that says REPENT NOW...but I think it's going to be soon that a major US fault will go. Nothing but gut instinct...and by gut, I mean a dead set certainty in the pit of my stomach that we have only a few weeks until we aren't just watching this on the news as it happens to some other country.

I don't know if I posted it here, cuz I don't want to sound like the bad ol' conspiracy theorist. But I've been watching the LA vault for months now and how it's been lit up like a Christmas tree (I've chatted about it on my FB with a friend who thinks the same thing). But folks just tell me "oh, California is ALWAYS lit up". Yes it is, but the movement has been much more significant in the last few months than before. Add to that the odd earthquake(s) in Texas, Arkansas -- you can't convince me that something is not about to happen. My husband thinks I'm a loon (thus our argument this morning).

I know the media doesn't want to panic us, and would like us to keep our focus on Charlie Sheen - but I do believe we'll see some significant movement on the West Coast.

what to do -- what to do...

ALL MOO.

I sure have warned you about that ;) She uploaded on the 9th -- lucky guess perhaps?

Oh boy.

Cell phones are "spotty at best", landlines are down.
Coordination of aid agencies will be nearly impossible.
First light will be coming to the area in about an hour.
L.A. County Urban Rescue will be heading for Japan.

Idk, but I believe we're in for some true tests too, it was just her tone. Really.

They are continuing to search for folks in Crescent City that have been washed out to sea. Coast Guard confirms one dead, one missing, 2 made it back to land.

No new info that I can find about either the new eq, or the nuclear reactor. All I can say is when something strong enough to open a new fissure in the ocean floor 150 miles x 50 miles, we all need to be exceptionally aware of any fault line under our feet.

God be with all those who have been affected...both here in the US and most especially in Japan.

I feel so bad for the entire country of Japan right now. Those that survived the quake, then had to face the tsunami, those that made it through the tsunami, now have to face fire, those that make it through the fire, will now have to make it through poisoned water, no food, no heat and hypothermia.

I think the death toll will go a lot higher than 1000.

Agreed, and I pray for no volcano eruption for them...
I just cannot even imagine...

I am going to buy earthquake supplies TODAY. I'm not taking any chances. I lived through Loma Prieta and it is just logical that we could be affected by this. I need one of those wind up radios though. Water, food, Batteries, personal protection items...

Mel, you don't sound like a doomcryer, nor like a conspiracy theorist.

But I will hasten to assure you, as I've been watching this map for, literally, more than 10 years, that it's not as bad as it might look. I've seen it far more "red" than it is now. And, to be honest, I'd prefer to see more "red" right now because I want the pressure which I suspect is enormous right now be released a bit at a time...

There are certain areas which are always lit up, sure...the Salton sea to the south, San Fran and surrounding to the north, and a big one in the last month off of Eureka, at the border of OR/CA. But it's nothing unusual, it really isn't.

Still, as I've said before, it's a worry that most of the Pacific Rim has had large magnitude quakes recently (last 6 months), but we have not...and that is a concern to me.

Time to check emergency equipment and supplies, but I don't think it's time to be terribly worried. Just cautious.

Thanks Herding. I think it was around Christmas that there was significant amount of red dots, vs now (mostly yellow, a few blues and red). Maybe it's the lack of activity that I should be more worried about.

Interesting - I was at the dollar store the other day, and bought a boatload of batteries. I do need to go stock up my water supply though.

Thanks!

Mel
