Long post from the Ap.... Can't copy it here I don't think...

Officials declined to say what the temperature was inside the troubled reactor,
Unit 1. At 1,200C (2,200F), the zirconium casings of the fuel rods can react with the cooling water and create hydrogen. 2,200C, the uranium fuel pellets inside the rods start to melt, the beginning of a meltdown.

I just watched on our news that a Canadian organization Global Medic is deploying to Japan. The guy said they haven`t encountered a radiation issue in the past and he doesn`t know how they will deal with it, except to move his people out if it becomes a danger. Ummm, isn`t it just by definition a danger ...

Anyway, bless the people of Japan, bless the animals, and bless the volunteers who are flying there to help!

I feel so guilty right now, this minute. My 22 yr old son , who is an EMT,was about to go with a volunteer group to help with the rescues. His girlfriend called me to ask my advice as she is trying to get him to not go because of the new radiation danger. So I helped convince him that it is perhaps too dangerous right now. I feel bad but ....he's my son. I don't want him landing in that radiation cloud right now. My heart goes out to everyone and I feel really guilty
but ????

AP Although the government played down fears of a radiation leak, Japanese nuclear agency spokesman Shinji Kinjo acknowledged there were still fears of a collapse of the power plant's systems, rendering it unable regulate temperatures and keep the reactor fuel cool.

Yaroslov Shtrombakh, a Russian nuclear expert, said it was unlikely that the Japanese plant would suffer a meltdown like the one in 1986 at Chernobyl, when a reactor exploded and sent a cloud of radiation over much of Europe. That reactor, unlike the reactor at Fukushima, was not housed in a sealed container.

Major aftershock just struck Sendai. Tsunami alert is still in effect. Fear of another full quake that could trigger another tsunami.

I have 5 sons katydid, I'd do the same thing :( though if they chose to go against my wishes I'd love and support them no matter what.

Don't feel guilty, as an EMT his services are also needed to save lives here at home.

The ambassador is "saving face." The answer is in his expression. He's worried.

I question how the folks around the plant even know to evacuate? Many don't have power (and if so, in limited supply). Unless they are hooked up to the internet, how is this information flowing to them. Also, as I understand it, the local area is without power because it's all going to the plant (someone correct me if I'm wrong).

So how is his speech helping any of the local folks? Maybe they need to get a plane up in the air and beging sky-writing.

I feel so bad for them.

Since he is 22, I assume he made his own choice as to whether to not he should go.

I mean unless you gave him an ultimatum or something, he made his choice, so you don't really have anything to feel guilty about.

I do understand why he wanted to go and if I had the training necessary I would go in a heartbeat.

I couldn't understand that either. I've heard there are millions without power, or at least last night there were. And so many without food or transportation also. :(

I wondered how they knew, but I have heard all the people in Japan have earthquake emergency kits which include battery powered radios and I imagine police and the army are driving around telling people to get out.

Oh bless, Katy - don't feel guilty. I'd do the same thing (grabbing my sons ankles as he tried to leave). It's a tough decision, but one not made lightlly. If he can imagine the raditation issue (if it does blow) and the possibility that this 8+ earthquake was possibly a precursor to an even bigger quake -- then he should stay put.

After all, we just might need him here. It (kinda) bothers me that we may be sending too many of our valuable resources to Japan, leaving us in the lurch. I know I should think that, but I can't help it.

Big hugs,

Mel

Thank you - I didn't think of that. We should all have them too :) I have my battery operated radio, but that's about it.

Trust me, I feel the same way. I have a friend missing over there. :( What I've heard is that they are for the most part stunned and kinda traumatized, wandering and following others. I don't think much is told to the locals to be honest. He said they were evacuating the locals in that area but to where, I dunno.

I don`t think anyone would expect you to warmly embrace his going - you can`t help but try to talk him out of it *hugs*
