They definitely have a myriad of disasters there. Many bridges also out, transportation is a huge problem, food is in very short supply, and not having electricity in some areas with cold temperatures could be a very big problem. MOO

Yes, the lack of food and the cold are major concerns, right now. As hard as it is to believe, radiation is probably the least of their problems at the moment. It would simply be another thing to worry about. But, as an expert said yesterday, people have an innate fear of radiation, regardless of level, so it gets the most attention. But I'm saying there is much more to worry about for them, and that they need help with.

They are confirming now that those were foreshocks, leading up to the 8.9. Just nobody had any way of knowing that at the time, and with the number of quakes that Japan gets, there was no reason to suspect.

So are these recent quakes foreshocks, or aftershocks? A 7 in California would certainly put everyone on its toes.

I was just doing some snooping and it was about this time last year we had some good quakes. Tis the season. Best double check my supplies.

Just noticed you're down the freeway from me! I used to live off Crown Valley Parkway (I just love Dana Point) but am now in San Diego.

Yes - please stock up on those supplies :) I bought some more batteries from the dollar store today....just in case...

California is pretty earthquake resistant like Japan is, I think it would depend on the type of earthquake and how long it lasts as to how badly it would impact the state. The ones like Japan had are the worst kind, and they lasted up to 2 minutes, sometimes. But I am guessing there is no way to know if they are fore or after shocks.

Hi Bean, Look at all the quakes generated off the Oregon Coast:

http://www.brucesussman.com/earthquakes-volcanoes/ring-of-fire-oregon-quakes-hawaii-volcano-eruption/

"String Of Quakes Off The Oregon Coast

And then there are the quakes. They started around lunch time on Sunday March 6, 2011. Here are the dates and magnitudes of this round:

* magnitude 4.8 – Sunday March 6, 2011
* magnitude 4.9 – Sunday March 6, 2011
* magnitude 3.9 – Sunday March 6, 2011
* magnitude 4.1 – Monday March 7, 2011
* magnitude 5.0 – Monday March 7, 2011
* magnitude 4.4 – Monday March 7, 2011
* magnitude 4.6 – Monday March 7, 2011"

That area 200 - 300 miles West of the OC is where Dixie Lee Ray {then Gov of Wa} wanted to dump the nuclear waste from northwest nuclear reactors. Thank God it didn't happen as this spot has so many quakes it's like it has the jitters.

Everything is connected with the plate activity in the Ring of Fire which of course includes the earthquake activity off Japan. It certainly is active right now, eh?

Sorry - but I can't stand this. CNN.com has a video on its home page set to MUSIC! What is that supposed to do -- make me feel worse? Yes, you need to set your news to soppy piano music. Hate it, can't stand it, and if they start putting soppy videos out, I won't be able to go there anymore.

What happened to news -- simple news. I don't know if anyone else feels this way, but OMGosh, it drives me potty. Just like I can't watch that animal commercial with Sara McLaughlin (sp).

I'm sure there will be a gazillion YT videos, but I expect more from CNN :(

MOO

Another reactor at Fukushima nuke plant loses cooling functions
TOKYO, March 13, Kyodo

Tokyo Electric Power Co. said Sunday another reactor of its quake-hit Fukushima nuclear power plants had lost its cooling functions, while at least 15 people at a nearby hospital were found to have been exposed to radioactivity.

It was the sixth reactor overall at the Fukushima No. 1 and No. 2 plants to undergo cooling failure since the massive earthquake and ensuing tsunami struck Japan on Friday.

I saw on either FOX or CNN that there is a small town in Japan where up to 1000 people have disappeared !!! God bless all the people touched personally by this quake and it's aftermath.

Hope this is the right thread, but yesterday from the time the Tsunami was due to hit our coast until evening I heard so many airplanes going overhead. I am on the flight path to the airport in PDX but this was different with many of those screaming jets. I felt safe knowing it had to be connected to the Tsunami and Oregon was on the ball, but was scared at the same time as we were still waiting to see what would happen. xox

that's better than the earlier estimate of 6500 missing in one town...

Their numbers are way off, imo. :(

Oh Yes, I'm sure you're right. Japan has it's hands full now even though they are supposedly very sharp with detail. It will take some time to evaluate it IMO

I agree with you. Another thing would be drinking water, sanitation, and so forth.

British media will say it...

Yesterday’s winds were blowing away from Japan’s most heavily populated areas but contaminated dust could be swept by the high-altitude jet stream across the Pacific towards the United States.

There are fears that billions of dollars worth of crops will have to be destroyed if a “poison cloud” hits America’s West Coast. The jet stream could carry any contamination into the prairie wheat fields that cover more than 50 million acres.

I'm more worried about Hawaii, since it's so much closer, and nowhere for anyone to flee to. :(

Hi Panthera, Great to see you Krams

I was thinking the same thing. I think the Tsunami waves were smaller in Hawaii than on the Western shore of the US and Alaska. Thought that was most interesting as they must pick up power on their way across the ocean. Either that or the bottom of the ocean has some mountain range that made the waves higher when they reached the shoreline. Interesting is all. xox

I agree about the tsunami waves, however what would scare me would be if I were in Hawaii, not being able to get away from the radiation, or whatever. At least in California, one can go inland.
