Here's an Earthquake Notification Service

:The Earthquake Notification Service (ENS) is a free service that sends you automated notification emails when earthquakes happen in your area." Even sends texts to your cell phone.

Hello Everyone, back n forth from work and catching up on post for a few days. First I want to Thank everyone for their post and updates. I'm finding the place I like finding the best collection of the earthquake disaster and reports is right here. I read many post I wish to comment on but must pass because of time, sleep, work. :(

Very tragic disaster occurring and along with it comes many lessons for the future. While hind site is always 20/20 I do wish to commend the Japanese government for their forth coming information about the nuclear reactor updates even if they do seem to be downplaying it sometimes. I would hate to see a news blackout about the situation.

Moving on, contacting people by phone there. A couple things to consider. Cell service maybe mostly unusable at this time until power is restored. Those without power can only use battery power. Recharging maybe difficult and people maybe trying to conserve battery power for emergency calls, then switching their phone off. Messaging was used during Hurricane Katrina even though cell calls were disabled. Not sure how effective that maybe for Japan but you could try and give it a day or two. I once had a text message from Ghana take 6 days to reach me. (Surprise)

Correct me if I'm wrong but according to the time converter it's approx. 1:27PM on Sunday the 13th. I'm typing at 11:27PM on Saturday evening the 12th (Eastern Time Zone). Japan time link below.

Weather for Fukushima, Japan now is 57 Degrees

Preliminary winds report

Speed / Dir 12 mph from WNW - So I think by looking at maps most radiation is blowing into the Pacific Ocean which would be a good thing for Japan. I'm trying to look-up and find prevailing winds but not successful yet for Japan.
Tonight the low will be 30 degrees, nights will be cold there. Here's a current and 5 day forecast and other info link for Fukushima, Japan.

Thank you Quiche, it is a comfort to see rescue numbers rise. I worry that all of the radiation talk is going to start pushing outside groups to not want to go in there, when those poor people need help ASAP.

We do have a small number of armed forces personnel stationed there in Japan hopefully they will utilize them or already have in rescue efforts and logistics...etc.

I know that there are several fund raisers this weekend for the red cross here so they can send supplies over ASAP from here.

:praying: for Japan

We have numerous earthquakes every day. You can call your local seismology lab and ask how many earthquakes they have had that day or week and they'll tell ya'. The thing is, most are so small they can't be felt. I have been struck by the fact that there have been so many large and destructive ones in the last several years. It does seem there are more such earthquakes than usual. I don't know. Scientists do not seem alarmed though and I'll admit to being pretty dumb when it comes to science!

But, 500? Wow. Here's a list of Earthquake Facts and Statistics

http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eqarchives/year/eqstats.php

The USGS estimates that several million earthquakes occur in the world each year. Many go undetected because they hit remote areas or have very small magnitudes. The NEIC now locates about 50 earthquakes each day, or about 20,000 a year.

As more and more seismographs are installed in the world, more earthquakes can be and have been located. However, the number of large earthquakes (magnitude 6.0 and greater) has stayed relatively constant. See at above link: Are Earthquakes Really on the Increase?

Safety warnings ignored about reactors...
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/mar/12/japan-ministers-ignored-warnings-nuclear

Despite the issues... I don't think anything could have stopped what has happened.. it was mother nature...

Yes. And that's what really irks me about nuclear power. No, we don't want to fund clean energy as an alternate to oil because that would cut into big oil revenues. But nuclear energy, sure thing! Because big industry, including defense, benefits from investment and development of nuclear energy while due to its dangerousness, it will never be prolific enough to replace oil.

But this event shows me how risky such energy is. Scares me silly. I'm here in California, very close to a nuclear power plant (which is on the beach by the way), and we are past due for a massive earthquake such as the rest of the world has been experiencing. Lordy, Lordy. Scares me silly.

This whole event has been like watching a nightmare unfold. My heart breaks for all of the people who are struggling with this all over the world! A big shout-out to all of you WS'ers for providing information that is FAR superior to anything I have seen on TV. I also want to give a shout-out to the workers at those nuclear plants in Japan. They are working SO hard to stop the nuclear melt down and that has to be a difficult thing for them because their own family is suffering and they can't take the time right now to focus on anything but their jobs. God bless them! God bless all of the people on this beautiful planet.

Thanks for that. It does clear some things up. Like how we detect more earthquakes now due to all the equipment around the world that wasn't there before. But what you posted indicates that earthquakes have doubled this week. Hmm. I don't know what to think!

It's so horrible. I usually can keep my composure but watching a CNN video of people watching as their whole town was swept away, mothers hanging on to their kids, a little girl crying in fear - it's horrific. It just made me weep. http://www.cnn.com/
Having to watch everything swept away - the magnitude, the power, as you stand on a hill realizing how precarious safety is and how nothing that seemed permanent or stable ever is 100%, that's frightening beyond belief.

Just like precious little Marie Luz must have felt ~ frightened beyond belief. I will never forget her and think we must equate her fear to the greatest a human could feel before being left murdered in that marshland. Fear is Fear and great when one has no control of altering it. Just like being in the way of a spontaneous Tsunami. xox

For any of our guests that read here.

Please make note and pass this on to someone who may need this link for this purpose~thank you.

If you have a military member stationed in Japan and have not heard from them yet---here is a website you can search for updates on their status.

Unit 3 at Fukushima Daiichi apparently has lost both high pressure injection sources (RCIC & HPCI.) Not good.

I posted this back a few pages but this is the earthquake activity off the Oregon Coast so far this month. I know we had another 5.5 a couple of days ago as did Alaska:

"http://www.brucesussman.com/earthqua...cano-eruption/

"String Of Quakes Off The Oregon Coast

And then there are the quakes. They started around lunch time on Sunday March 6, 2011. Here are the dates and magnitudes of this round:

* magnitude 4.8 – Sunday March 6, 2011
* magnitude 4.9 – Sunday March 6, 2011
* magnitude 3.9 – Sunday March 6, 2011
* magnitude 4.1 – Monday March 7, 2011
* magnitude 5.0 – Monday March 7, 2011
* magnitude 4.4 – Monday March 7, 2011
* magnitude 4.6 – Monday March 7, 2011"

Yeah, look at the stats...they were high, then low, now they are rising high again. Prayers are our best bet at this point as we've seen so much destruction from these quakes the past year or so: Haiti, New Zealand, South America, Japan.

Yup, I'm right there in the line of fire too, along with many of my family members. I had no idea. I thought it would only be a local effect. The entire west coast of the U.S.! I have the resources to leave if need be and places to go to in Europe. But what about all the millions who don't? And what would happen if the entire west coast shut down? If thousands fled, the economy and infrastructure would collapse. This is very scary. I saw some guy commenting that the government of Japan needs transparency right now and should allow international authorities to check things out for themselves. Given the link you posted, Quiche, my gosh, they really do need to. Now I'm scared!

I don't know if you've caught up yet, but through a great deal of searching it was determined that map is not credible. Its origin went back to a retailer selling disaster relief stuff. :banghead:

It's been a few years since I've discussed it but Japan would not allow nuclear Navy ships in their ports, to dock for repairs or any reason.

I've heard somewhere they have now invited the USS Ronald Reagan in to help and broken that restriction.

I'm glad you're safe and sound Kat, your location sounds beautiful.

Seriously? Oh, thank you so much! I'm by myself here tonight and just started reading. Got scared and most of my family is at a concert! I started thinking, "What the heck do we do now? How long can we survive financially somewhere else? What do I do with my animals?" Etc. You know how the mind works!

Nuclear crisis adds to tragedy
Japan 'assuming a meltdown occurred
http://www.cnn.com/

Japanese authorities rush to save lives, avert nuclear crisis
http://www.cnn.com/2011/WORLD/asiapcf/03/12/japan.quake/index.html?hpt=T1&iref=BN1

"Shirakawa, Japan (CNN) -- Japanese authorities are operating on the presumption that possible meltdowns are under way at two nuclear reactors, a government official said Sunday, adding that there have been no indications yet of hazardous emissions of radioactive material into the atmosphere.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano told reporters there is a "possibility" of a meltdown at the plant's No. 1 reactor, adding, "It is inside the reactor. We can't see." He then added that authorities are also "assuming the possibility of a meltdown" at the facility's No. 3 reactor."

Kinda O/T - but not.

About 5 years ago or so, DH and I came across a few web sites for real estate that were selling old missle silos (underground). These were bought from the gov't. and then literally transformed into beautiful homes with everything and anything under the sun - except they were all underground. Some had 2 homes - one above ground and another one underground.

It fascinated us and we went through every photo. These places were really really cool.

I have to wonder though - what would happen in an earthquake. Tsunamis (or any water) wouldn't matter as they sealed watertight if you needed them to. But the underground shaking - I don't know how they would fair - you just might end up being buried in there.

Still a thought - and I remembered looking through those the past couple of days with all the new developments.

Hi Gitana, I've had the news on all day, and according to them you get your animals ready to take with you at first warning and keep liquid cash in your pocketbook. xox
