I've read that it's ineffective-- too weak. hth

Oh, did you hear about using betadine or tincture of iodine? There's a link around here somewhere...

When my husband had cancer and got radiation, I read a lot about how to protect the body. I recall reading somewhere that in Japan after the nuclear bombs were dropped, many doctors successfully treated patients with a diet rich in seaweed - it somewhere protects the body from radiation.

I'll see if I can find something on it.

ETA - here are some links:

I switched over to MSNBC and they seem to be live - but not in Japan.

me either and just "bam" to tape with no explanation. Maybe they went inside because of the snow storm.

Or have they come to their senses and are now hightailing it out of there? I feel like all h3ll is getting ready to break loose. I fervently hope I am wrong, but this seems to be spiralling out of control and instead of the situation improving it is deteriorating. I really admire the Japanese people for the dignity in which they are taking all of this carp in stride. God bless them all.

I don't understand. The workers have left the plant, the worst possible news and now our news is not even talking about it? WTH?

Banner says "Fire at reactor #4 involved outer shell of containment building."

MSNBC

The outer shell of the containment building is concrete. How would that catch on fire?

  • #946
Another banner: " Japan's PM: Radiation has leaked from 4 of 6 reactors."

Well that certainly isn't good.

Fukushima No. 3 reactor's container feared damaged: Edano

http://english.kyodonews.jp/news/2011/03/78466.html

Quote: The container of the No.3 reactor of the quake-hit Fukushima No.1 nuclear power plant is feared to have been damaged and may have leaked radioactive steam Wednesday, emitting high-level radiation, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said.

I really feel like i'm in the twilight zone here, workers leaving, earthquake warnings....and no one here is talking about it. I don't like it at all.

Talking about the needs of the people in shelters. They cant find kerosene for heat, gasoline, food, diapers, water, medical personnel to help the elderly. There is no medicine, no pharmacist and people are cold some need warm clothes. Some shelters are unreachable, people are looking for their loved ones.

Volunteer groups are being dispatched from the South to reach the people with supplies and bring back trash. Bathroom sanitation is difficult.

I hope these people find help soon.

I have been unable to find any potassium iodide in my little town. I wonder how effective "iodized salt" would be?

An adult dosage of potassium iodide to protect against thyroid cancer is 130 mg. daily for the duration of exposure to the radioactive substance.

I read somewhere that it would take 4-5 cups of iodized salt to meet that dosage. IOW - not something you'd want to do.

http://www.infowars.com/alert-fukushima-coverup-40-years-of-spent-nuclear-rods-blown-sky-high/

Excerpt:
The Fukushima Daiichi plant has seven pools dedicated to spent fuel rods. These are located at the top of six reactor buildings – or were until explosions and fires ravaged the plant. On the ground level there is a common pool in a separate building that was critical damaged by the tsunami. Each reactor building pool holds 3,450 fuel rod assemblies and the common pool holds 6,291 fuel rod assemblies. Each assembly holds sixty-three fuel rods. In short, the Fukushima Daiichi plant contains over 600,000 spent fuel rods – a massive amount of radiation that will soon be released into the atmosphere.

Tell me this isn't true...

Bringing Teh's post forward... this is the link, byomoi.

If worse comes to worse and you can't find those products either, there are a couple of products used in marine reef keeping. Lugol's solution is an Iodine and Potassium Iodide solution used to help soft coral growth. Kent and Brightwell both make a Lugol's and I believe they also make an Iodide solution. There is a human grade Lugol's and I have no idea if it's the same as the marine grade. I've got no knowledge if it would be safe for people though so if anyone is desperate and wants to go that way I'd check to be sure before using either. You should be able to get either anywhere they sell salt water aquariums and fish. Here's a link that talk's about Lugol's and how to use it to protect the thyroid.
