Japan's earthquake shifted the balance of the planet

The areas closest to the epicenter of the quake jumped a full 13 feet closer to the United States, geophysicist Ross Stein at the United States Geological Survey told The New York Times.

The 9.0 magnitude quake (the fourth-largest recorded since 1900) was caused when the Pacific tectonic plate dove under the North American plate, which shifted Eastern Japan towards North America by about 13 feet (see NASA's before and after photos at right). The quake also shifted the earth's axis by 6.5 inches, shortened the day by 1.6 microseconds, and sank Japan downward by about two feet.

After the country's 1995 earthquake, Japan placed high-tech sensors around the country to observe even the slightest movements, which is why scientists are able to calculate the quake's impact down to the inch. "This is overwhelmingly the best-recorded great earthquake ever," Lucy Jones, chief scientist for the Multi-Hazards project at the U.S. Geological Survey, told The Los Angeles Times.

Up here in my neck of the woods (the PNW) potassium iodide is sold OTC in many vitamin stores & nutrition stores as a dietary supplement.

All nutrition stores in my area are currently sold out.

We were given conflicting information by several different pharmacies last night. Here are the 3 stories we were told by pharmacists:

1. The hospitals had bought up all the stocks

2. The government was holding all the stocks in the event of an "emergency" :waitasec:

3. A prescription is required (not true)

Potassium iodide (KI) is available over-the-counter (OTC). However, if you have any health concerns or questions, you should check with your doctor.

I have seen KI (potassium iodide) on the shelf of my nutrition store. I just never thought I would witness the day when I may potentially need to buy it.

My state's Dept. of Health has issued statements saying they are monitoring the situation, as are the other states on the West Coast, as well as British Columbia.

KI is most effective when taken immediately before or within the first few hours of exposure to radioactive materials. The thyroid gland must be saturated with potassium iodide to prevent the thyroid from absorbing the radioactive iodine.

Infants, children, pregnant women & their unborn babies are most at risk.

I'm not worried for myself - but I do worry for my daughter & my new grandbaby.

As far as I'm concerned, KI needs to be made available now to those most at risk, in the event that it may be needed.

"There was a 6.4 earthquake in the Shizuoka area, where I am from and my family are now. This is near the Hamaoka nuclear plant, which is still operating. It has been predicted that the Shizuoka area will have an eight level earthquake in the near future, due to the pressure from two [tectonic] plates. We must put pressure on the Japanese government to stop the operation of the Hamaoka plant, which could cause the same damage as the plant at Fukushima if further earthquakes happen. We don't want the same situation happening again."

But, as a regular person living on this planet-I think the nuclear plant should be shut down forever. They all should. We can see the risk is not worth the "energy"(?) we get, if that is what it was used for. The people of Japan have made it though what mother nature brought, no one controls that: but the man made danger is what is worse.

The explosion Tuesday at Japan's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant has elevated the situation there to a "serious accident" on a level just below Chernobyl, a French nuclear official said, referring to an international scale that rates the severity of such incidents.
The International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale -- or INES -- goes from Level 1, which indicates very little danger to the general population, to Level 7, a "major accident" in which there's been a large release of radioactive material and there will be widespread health and environmental effects.
"It's clear we are at Level 6, that's to say we're at a level in between what happened at Three Mile Island and Chernobyl," Andre-Claude Lacoste, president of France's nuclear safety authority, told reporters Tuesday.

[4:02 p.m. ET Tuesday, 5:02 a.m. Wednesday in Tokyo] Iodide pills are being given to sailors as a "precautionary measure only," U.S. Navy spokesman Capt. Danny Hernandez said. The U.S. Army's Camp Zama, about 25 miles outside Tokyo, is also taking steps in light of the potential radiation threat.

Messages on the U.S. Army-Japan Facebook page says health officials have been taking "environmental radiation readings every 3 hrs" since Monday and they indicate "absolutely no health risk to our community."

The message added "negligible levels" of radiation require "mitigating measures," including limiting outdoor activities, closing windows and keeping children inside.

Representatives for the Marines and Air Force said they have not seen any reports of their troops testing positive for exposure.

The Navy has three ships en route to Japan to help with disaster relief. They are expected to arrive Thursday. Because of radiation concerns, they will position themselves in the Sea of Japan on the country's west coast rather than the east coast.

I guess out of curiosity, I went through Youtube, and pulled together some videos, that seem to be accurate depictions, without a lot of hype or inaccurate depictions. As well as Three Mile Island, there are videos of Chernobyl and Pripyat. They include pictures and video, some taken at the time, some twenty years lter, interviews with parents of children of Chernobyl, documentaries from reputable sources on both tragedies. The last video is about 6 minutes, entitled the Heroes of Chernobyl...it's a tearjerker when you realize that the men you see and the men shooting the video from the helicopters are now gone, for the most part, from the effects of the radiation they susteined trying to save their livlihoods, friends, families, and complete strangers.
