The older the rod the less likely the threat. If they're still in pools and not in dry containers, they're still "hot". Half life is like 230 years? Have to go look...

ETA: At this point all of our TMI-2 rods are in dry storage within the containment building... monitored by the staff of TMI-1 (different company).

Maddow says-- 130 tons of fuel in #4, Chernobyl was 180. on air

I love Maddow. She's one awesome/intelligent lady. Thought I'd throw that out there...

I'm listening to The Dubliners instead. I need a "palate cleansing."

Thanks for the updates tho. :/

For the President himself to speak to the American people on this occasion, he must first have something very important - definite - to say. We don't need that yet because the situation right now just does not warrant it - the situation is fluid and unscripted; definite answers are not yet known. Any appearance by President Obama will afterwards be judged not only in this country but also by others across the world as, as its most powerful democracy, we are looked to for leadership in times of crisis. And appearing on-camera for the sake of an appearance at this time would cheapen a chief executive's ability to project leadership, and to lead.

I think he is letting those that know more than he does here in the US do the talking for now. I'd rather here from leaders in the areas of public health and nuclear energy than from the President.

I'm sorry I'm bearer of bad news :( Sometimes I wish I knew less... (Not that I know much to begin with)...

Ok - until we catch the reun of the numbers of tons of fuel held by each reactor I'm going to go with the same amount:

I'm grabbing the status stats from here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/blog/2011/mar/15/japan-earthquake-and-tsunami-japan

Reactor #1 130 tons Status: Partial core meltdown

Reactor #2 130 tons Status: Potential meltdown feared

Reactor #3 130 tons Status: Blast; fire; radiation leak (this is also the "mox" reactor - plutonium)

Reactor #4 130 tons Status: Fire; water levels dropping (reported today that the spent fuel pond is "dry")

Now, I don't know if the 130 tons of fuel is what was in the "spent fuel pond" or in total - including the fuel in the reactors. Now, #4 had no fuel in the reactor as is was already shut down before the earthquake. So, that total of 130 tons is TOTAL inside that particular building.

Chernobyl - 180 tons of fuel

4 reactors @ 130 tons each = 520 tons of fuel - This is almost 3 times (2.8) the amount of fuel from Chernobyl.

Yes, and 5 and 6 are actually all spent fuel-- I do recall seeing a 150 for #6.

I understand what you are saying but I respectfully disagree. And I suppose I should have said this right off the bat---it does not matter to me his political party of affiliations---that is irrelevant. I can't help but think of 9/11 as (in my mind) that was prob. the worst domestic disaster we have ever had. Pres. Bush did not IMMEDIATELY address the nation---but he did 3 (or 4???) evenings later. He didn't give us much "definite" information---but he did tell us that we are stronger than terrorists and that we could overcome this horrific tragedy. It was not so much WHAT he said, but that he said SOMETHING to let the American public know that the gov't was aware of all that was going on. I understand that Pres. Obama's in a delicate spot ---- what to say? who to say it to? how will other nations take any such speech/talk? I am just saying that for the general public's reassurance it might be nice to hear from the head honcho. Maybe I am the only that feels this way. :twocents:

That's correct. Take care when consuming above the recommended daily levels, because the liver and kidneys can be severely damaged by them. Toxicity can occur with D especially; so be very, very careful if you take more than 1 a day of a 1 a day vitamin. Actually, don't do it without your Dr. telling you to do so.

Look, people, iodide/iodine is not going to do too much to protect our bodies. While I firmly believe that one of the most important glands in our body is the thyroid, we can save the thyroid all we want, and it will do no good if there is no body it can work in, KWIM? The focusing on the iodide/iodine is seeing a tree instead of a forest.

Far better, at this point, and imho, to do a bit more preparedness in terms of food and water, and not necessarily OTC iodine. Water, food that can be eaten straight from a can (no using water to dilute/cook in), canned broths (for that which has to be cooked in liquid, such as rice), and so on. That will do more for you, your body, and your peace of mind than anything else.

Here's the truth.

If there are meltdowns occurring, very little can be done to put that particular genie back into the bottle. The reactors look trashed to me, so it's safe to think that a huge environmental event has/is happening.

What you can do - and still maintain some sort of reality - is to do only that which you can reasonably do, and then get on about your life. I must admit, in moments of panic, of thinking of bringing my horse into the living room. That, however, won't work in the least...so...we do what we can, and trust that God will do the rest (and if you don't believe in God, than trust whatever system of belief you have...it's all good).

Take the steps you can reasonably take, and then...get on about life.

As for Obama and the rest of the administration, I am at a loss as to why no-one has made a statement...and while that does bother me, it also reminds me that it is up to me, and me alone, to protect/preserve myself. Always.

Be sensible, be reasonable, and be prudent. There is nothing more anyone can do.

Best-
Herding Cats

Post of the day. TY HC!

Very good advice.

I think one of the Super Scooper arplanes hold 7200 gallons. Get a couple of those out there.

but better find a link for that LOL.

Yes, quiche - I didn't include 5 and 6. Seems we haven't heard much about them today.

Radiological Contamination

* 17 people (9 TEPCO employees, 8 subcontractor employees) suffered from deposition of radioactive material to their faces, but were not taken to the hospital because of low levels of exposure
